PRI Continues Fight Against EPA Overreach

As previously reported, PRI has intervened in an EPA enforcement case to protect the rights of racers.

The U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona, while acknowledging the fundamental issue raised by PRI, has declined to make a ruling in the lawsuit between the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Gear Box Z. Inc. (GBZ). While pursuing GBZ for tampering allegations, the EPA made statements in its court filings that the Clean Air Act (CAA) does not allow a motor vehicle to be converted into a racing vehicle used solely for competition and that equipment installed to make the conversion is illegal. PRI has challenged this flawed interpretation of the CAA first made by the EPA in 2015 and now repeated in the court filing.

The Court has ruled that the EPA produced evidence that the subject products sold by GBZ were being used on highway vehicles, with no evidence of use on motorsports vehicles. Therefore, lacking evidence of the converting of road vehicles to dedicated race cars, which would have necessitated the Court address the issue, the Court declined to rule on whether the CAA disallows conversions of street vehicles to dedicated racing machines.

While not settling the street-to-race car conversion issue, PRI’s filing of the amicus brief was impactful for several reasons. First, it demonstrates the need for the U.S. Congress to enact the “Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act” (RPM Act), bi-partisan legislation to clarify that it is legal to make such conversions and to produce, market and install racing equipment. Second, the Court’s opinion did offer some favorable language with the Court confirming that it is the EPA’s burden to produce evidence that emissions-related equipment is being used illegally on highway vehicles when making such a claim.

PRI will continue to work tirelessly to settle the EPA’s overreach by passing the RPM Act.

As a result of a new agreement between NASCAR and Wynn Resorts, Martinsville Speedway and Richmond Raceway will both soon start the construction of betting lounges, or hospitality venues that will host fans participating in sports betting on the WynnBET platform. WynnBET is the digital gaming division of Wynn Resorts.

In 2020, the Virginia General Assembly passed legislation to legalize sports betting and create the process for the Virginia Lottery to grant online sports betting licenses. The WynnBET sports betting license application highlighting the partnership with Richmond Raceway and Martinsville Speedway was among 25 submitted to the Virginia Lottery in October 2020, and WynnBET is now one of six currently authorized in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

“Our new partnership with Wynn Resorts is having a positive impact as NASCAR advances its position in the rapidly evolving gaming space,” NASCAR SVP and Chief Digital Officer Tim Clark said. “As we work closely with WynnBET to deliver a state-of-the-art race engagement tool for our race fans, we are grateful to the Virginia Lottery for leading this process and we look forward to welcoming this new experience in Virginia.”

WynnBET is now a legal gaming operator in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the WynnBET mobile app has launched for sports betting enthusiasts to register and use throughout the state. Players who are at least 21 years of age can now download the app on smartphone devices.

“We welcome WynnBET, an Authorized Gaming Operator of NASCAR, as a licensed mobile sports betting operator in Virginia,” Richmond Raceway President Dennis Bickmeier said. “We look forward to working closely with WynnBET as they launch the premier sports betting platform in the Commonwealth and expand our economic impact across the state.”

San Tan Ford’s Arizona Speedway and ET Motopark, the dirt race track and off-road facility based in San Tan Valley, Arizona, will cease operations this April, according to an announcement by Owners Jonah Trussell and Steve Coleman.

“The Arizona State Land Department has decided that the facility and noise it produces does not fit into their neighboring development plan,” Trussell wrote. “As per [the] agreement, we will continue with events for the next few weeks.”

Due to the announcement, the Keyser Manufacturing Wild West Shootout presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts has announced that the 16th edition of the mini-series will be moved from Arizona Speedway to New Mexico’s Vado Speedway Park beginning in 2022. The series dates are set for January 8-9, January 12, and January 14-16.

The track, which opened in 2011, hosts a variety of classes, including IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, Bombers, and more. ET Motopark has been in operation for 20 years, and hosts off-road, mud bogs, sand drags, motocross, demolition derby, and more.

“Thank you to everyone for years of support from myself and my family. We will likely see you somewhere again in the future,” Trussell stated.

Arizona Speedway will host a mud bogs and sand drags finale on March 27, followed by the “Last Dance” race featuring sprint cars, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Sport Mods, IMCA Stock Cars, and Bombers on April 3.

New Andretti Partnership To Bring Mars Rover Tech To EV Motorsports

Submitted by laurap on Thu, 03/18/2021 - 14:35

KULR Technology Group Inc., the developer of next-generation lithium-ion battery safety and thermal management technologies, has announced a long-term technology and developmental partnership with Andretti Technologies (ATEC), the advanced technology arm of Andretti Autosport founded by Michael Andretti.

The partnership aims to transfer technical knowledge from aerospace to the race track through ATEC-affiliated programs. Drawing upon KULR’s technical solutions for space exploration, including the NICER instrument on the International Space Station, the Mercury Messenger, and the SHERLOC instrument on the Mars Rover, ATEC plans to implement new cooling technology, battery cell architecture, and testing methods within the global EV motorsports marketplace.

“The alliance with KULR provides ATEC additional technical resources to accelerate engineering and scale battery system development in a sustainable way, while also allowing us access to KULR’s hardware expertise to help compete with the largest OEMs in the most competitive motorsport races on the planet,” Andretti Technologies Chief Technology Officer Roger Griffiths said.

As part of the alliance, KULR will establish a thermal management testing and design platform for high-performance battery solutions specially adapted to Andretti’s global racing enterprise.

Both partners will also focus on co-developing and co-marketing motorsports’ battery and safety technologies to automotive partners for mass-market EV applications.

Andretti Technologies was founded in early 2015 with the primary focus of developing dynamic and sustainable clean-energy solutions.

Race Team Confidential: Don O’Neal, Evansville, Indiana

Don O’Neal

This triple threat drag race team focuses as much on preparation for the track as it does on how well it represents its marketing partners once they arrive.

Streetway Marketing & Media includes three drivers—JB and Megan Strassweg, and myself—and race cars that compete around the country in Top Dragster, Super Comp, and Top Sportsman, respectively. Pairing the cars, drivers, and sponsors together to be successful on and off the track is a challenge that’s rooted in executing sales for all partners involved.

Additionally, we produce a podcast and stream a weekly drag racing show.

On the podcast we talk about marketing, business to business, the do’s and don’ts of social media…the business side of things. My co-host is NHRA Top Fuel driver Cameron Ferre, and our guests are people who aren’t afraid to share the right ways to be successful—as well as some wrong ways—when it comes to motorsports marketing, advertising, and sponsorship.

We use the podcast as part of our marketing package, and we can also use it to develop an email database, expose new products—and we have the opportunity to tell backstories from different people. It’s really to teach how to be better in the world of motorsports, regardless if it’s going in a straight line or going left and right, or whatever the case may be. We’re in our third year, and it’s at around a million downloads.

To coincide with that, we’ve launched a new show called “This Week in Drag Racing” that’s mainly about non-NHRA drag racers. Produced by Warren Evans, it features NMCA, NMRA, PDRA, etc. We’re looking at the guys and gals who are out there grinding away to make it to the next level.

For this race team, an offseason seems almost non-existent. We have engine freshens, race cars to wrap, crew shirts to design, and the list goes on.

Usually I would take the car completely apart and check every item including shocks, struts, rearend, brakes…disassemble and reassemble. But this past offseason the car went to Jerry Haas Race Cars for repairs because I wrecked it. JB and I take care of the routine maintenance like running valves, oil changes, and general upkeep. We rely on the experts at AFCO to service our shocks and struts.

We typically don’t start ramping up the racing until the end of March or beginning of April. We will have dyno sessions, hub dyno time, and on-track testing before we roll into our first competition. We don’t like to show up to a race in test mode and spend time preparing before we get there.

Once the haulers leave for the first race of the season, our focus moves to maintenance, logistics, activation, and winning. We take a military approach for resupply on items that we need while we’re doing back-to-back events, which may keep the haulers on the road for multiple weeks. We look at work schedules, commitments, etc. to understand what needs to be shipped, picked up, or in the haulers.

Due to COVID-19, when preparing for the 2021 season we looked at different regional series across the country that align with our regularly planned tour in case any events get canceled. We are an extension for each of our marketing partners. They need to sell product, so we need to be in front of people in different locations to impact those sales. We need to show off the products’ performance and reliability in competition.

Value for our partners always starts with, “What’s the strategy?” Then we can come up with execution points for whatever is valuable to the company, product, or brand. When it comes to value for us, that really depends on what the partner is looking for as part of their strategy. We can take somebody that has a product that they’re trying to launch, and we can R&D it and help on the development side, but then also work them into distribution as well as the marketing side.

Our engine program is maintained by the team at Oakley Engine Performance, and our inventory of engines covers large-cubic-inch big block Chevrolet nitrous engines, naturally aspirated engines for Super class and bracket racing, and LS engines with Magnuson Superchargers.

This season we are excited about our new Litens high-performance tensioner kit for the Magnuson supercharger program. We’re always trying new converter combinations and transmission ratios. JB had a top-10 year in 2020 with his Top Dragster combination, so we aren’t changing much with that program. But Megan is getting a new big-mph combo for Super Comp in 2021.

NHRA officials have announced the postponement of the 61st annual Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, California, originally scheduled for April 9-11.

NHRA and track officials will continue to look to state and federal health officials for recommendations to host events in the state. A new date for the event is to be determined.

“We are confident we will find a new date for the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals,” NHRA Vice President of Track Management & Operations Kasey Coler said. “We are working closely with California health officials to come to an agreement as to the best dates for the event.”

The NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series season kicked off with a successful race at the AmalieMotor Oil NHRA Gatornationals in Gainesville. The season will continue racing action at the Denso Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, April 16-18. NHRA officials are confident the season will consist of 22 national events.

Auto Club Raceway is currently serving as a COVID-19 vaccination site, allowing locals to drive through the facility and receive their vaccination.
