HSR Adds First Overseas Race, Returns to Top U.S. Circuits in 2026

Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) logo

HSR's 2026 schedule includes its first international appearance and return engagements at North America's premier road courses.

Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) has announced its 2026 calendar, highlighted by the organization's first international event at the inaugural Le Mans Classic Legend and a continued focus on premier American road courses, including multiple weekends at Daytona International Speedway, Sebring International Raceway, and Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

The new transatlantic collaboration between HSR and Peter Auto--the vintage and historic arm of the Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO)--will see HSR's NASCAR Classic presented by Goodyear series compete July 2-5 at the Le Mans Classic Legend on the Circuit de la Sarthe. In return, Peter Auto will bring a grid of early-1960s GT sports cars from its "F period" to the HSR Daytona Classic 24 Hour presented by Mission Foods, scheduled for November 11-15.

The eight-event 2026 schedule opens January 21-25 with the second annual HSR IMSA Classic, held during Rolex 24 At Daytona weekend. The IMSA Classic showcases authentic sports cars from 1990-2010 with prior Rolex 24 race history, and a 20-car field will be selected by committee.

From there, the season continues with:

  • HSR Sebring Pistons & Props, February 12-15 at Sebring International Raceway
  • 48th HSR The Mitty, April 23-26 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta
  • HSR Watkins Glen Classic 6 Hour, June 11-14 at Watkins Glen International
  • HSR Road Atlanta Classic 10 Hour, September 17-20 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta
  • HSR Daytona Classic 24 Hour, November 11-15 at Daytona International Speedway
  • HSR Sebring Classic 12 Hour, December 2-6 at Sebring International Raceway

The Watkins Glen, Road Atlanta, Daytona and Sebring events will again run alongside their respective "Historics" weekends and count toward HSR's season-long championships, which include the HSR Classic Endurance Championship presented by Mission Foods, HSR Prototype Challenge presented by Michelin, Sasco Sports International/American Challenge presented by Hoosier, B.R.M. Endurance Challenge, HSR WeatherTech Sprint, and HSR Global GT series.

HSR will also support the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion and Pre-Reunion at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca in August as part of its ongoing sanctioning role for those events.

HSR President John Doonan said the 2026 calendar underscores HSR's commitment to providing extensive track time on iconic circuits while expanding internationally. "The 2026 HSR calendar of events once again features maximum track time on the most legendary road racing circuits in North America and now HSR's first competition visit overseas," Doonan said. "Seeing examples of the same era of classic sports cars that raced in the first major endurance races at Daytona more than 60 years ago is truly a can't-miss experience for competitors and race fans alike."

Tony Stewart Racing, Elite Motorsports Form Alliance

TSR Elite Alliance

Tony Stewart Racing (TSR) and Elite Motorsports are forming a business alliance, joining forces behind the scenes.

The alliance will focus on sales, marketing, sponsorship and hospitality programs across their respective teams in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series.

By working together, they can offer current and potential sponsors a bigger combined platform that spans multiple classes, including Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, Mountain Motor Pro Stock, Competition Eliminator and Pro Mod.

Headquartered in Brownsburg, Indiana, TSR fields two entries in the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series. Elite Motorsports operates the largest professional drag racing team in the NHRA Pro Stock category. Additionally, Elite Motorsports recently purchased team owner Josh Hart's Top Fuel program.

"Our partnership with Elite Motorsports and Richard Freeman and his group is unique," said TSR team owner Tony Stewart. "It's taking all of our assets that we have with TSR and Elite Motorsports with the Pro Stock, Mountain Motor Pro Stock, Competition Eliminator, and Pro Mod teams and creating a situation where we have a lot to offer partners and potential partners down the road. We will be pooling our assets together and working together to try to fund these race cars. This is a unique strategy that Richard came up with, but I really buy into the concept of it, and I think it's already beneficial in the short amount of time that we've already started working together."

Daytona 500-Winning NASCAR Team Owner Bill Davis, 74

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 09/09/2025 - 15:18

Bill Davis, a longtime team owner who won in all three NASCAR national series including wins in the Daytona 500 and Southern 500, has passed away, NASCAR reported. He was 74.

Bill Davis Racing fielded cars for multiple NASCAR Hall of Famers, including Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Gordon. The owner collected five wins in the Cup Series, all with driver Ward Burton behind the wheel of the team's flagship No. 22 entry. Burton won the Southern 500 at Darlington in 2001 and the Daytona 500 in 2002.

Bill Davis' teams also won 11 races in what’s now called the Xfinity Series and 24 times in the Craftsman Truck Series, a tenure that included the 2008 championship with driver Johnny Benson Jr.

A native of Arkansas, Davis sold his NASCAR operations after the 2008 season, eventually moving back to the state to focus on his trucking company and expand into the cattle industry. He was inducted to the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.

New for 2025: Online Tool to Promote PRI Show Exhibitor Updates, New Products

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 09/09/2025 - 14:20
PRI Show exhibitor announcements

PRI Show exhibitors can generate excitement and awareness among attendees and media--and possibly be included in PRI publications and promotions--by posting Show-related press releases at performanceracing.com/node/add/press_releases_exhibitor.

The new tool enables exhibitors to spotlight their products, make pre-Show announcements and direct media to their booths in the Indiana Convention Center, December 11-13.

Here are a few press release submission tips:

  • Post early. Media run preview stories with deadlines beginning in October.
  • Post often. Celebrity appearances, vehicle unveils, product news, special announcements--media want to know what you're doing at the PRI Show.
  • Use a strong, short headline that will catch the media's attention.
  • Keep the press release brief. Journalists want to know what the press release is about right from the beginning.
  • Include a photo; releases with photos are more likely to be used. Submit photos in a high-resolution image format.
  • When you upload a press release, make sure the type of announcement and racing segment is tagged correctly.
  • Always include your booth number and contact information.

Achieving Connecting Rod Longevity

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 09/09/2025 - 13:35
Connecting Rod Longetivity

Extending the life of a connecting rod involves matters both sophisticated and simple.

The sophisticated—use of proprietary steels and high-tech treatment processes—provide a foundation, but they only work if more simple ideals—cleanliness of the build and proper lubing, for example—are used.

Indeed, it all plays a role in the long life of a connecting rod, according to Steve Arent from Scat in Oxnard, California. "Extending the life of a connecting rod will only happen if correct rods are used in the build," he said, "and correct procedures are followed."

Our sources dove deep into the specifics of the sophisticated and simple for this look at rod longevity. We'll start with perhaps the No. 1 topic: using the correct rod.

THE APPLICATION QUESTION

Roger Friedman at Dyer's Top Rods in Forrest, Illinois, said a common engine building question—"how do you know you have the correct rod?"—might, frankly, have more than one correct answer.

"I have some customers who run a certain weight rod. I have another customer who runs heavier rods. And then I've got another customer who runs lighter rods," he said. "They've all had equal success" with similar applications.

The difference for each customer is determined by asking questions about the overall build. "A lot of it has to do with the weight of your crankshaft, the weight of your piston, the weight of your pin, and then you give a recommendation," Friedman said.

One recommendation he makes is to use aluminum rods in power-adder applications. "The aluminum rod is a shock absorber; it will absorb detonation," he said. "The perfect example is the Top Fuel car. That freakin' motor all the way down the strip is detonating, and those aluminum rods survive."

He said super-high-performance engines like those in dirt sprint cars and Late Models suffer material fatigue from heat, rpm, and detonation.

"The guys who have the best success…they'll probably keep the crankshaft in them, but they'll change the rods after about three or four rebuilds," Friedman added.

Tom Molnar of Molnar Technologies, Kentwood, Michigan, has studied why connecting rods break, and it starts with rod selection. "I think the primary way to extend the life of a connecting rod is by making sure the correct rods are used for the application," he said.

Molnar, too, recommended "connecting" with those building an engine or supplying the parts. "Our sales staff spend a major part of the day helping our customers with their rod and crank selection," he said.

A key to longevity is matching a rod to horsepower requirements, said Kirk Peters from Howards Cams, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. "When using power adders, boost, or nitrous, a balance needs to be in place between weight and desired horsepower."

You won't be surprised, however, by this caveat: "In the end it's about the dollars a racer has to spend on his parts," Peters added.

Richard Batchelor of CP-Carrillo in Irvine, California, said choosing the right rod starts with what power level the customer needs and for how long—drag racing vs. endurance racing, for example. Bore, stroke, horsepower, where that horsepower is made, maximum rpm, and piston assembly weight are additional variables.

He said customers sometimes see "light weight" and think they've found their rod. "And they just think because it's a Carrillo it's going to handle whatever they throw at it," he admitted. "Any rod manufacturer will tell you they design their rods for specific power levels and types of racing, not just all-out everything."

THE SOPHISTICATED

Those seeking more longevity from their rods might want an upgrade in material, such as the proprietary C107 high-strength steel alloy used by CP-Carrillo in its I-Beam and H-beam rods for drag, circle track, road racing, and other applications.

C107 weighs the same as the 4330 steel used in other CP-Carrillo rods but is about 22% stronger. With that, CP-Carrillo can reduce cross-sectional areas and make the C107 rods up to 16% lighter.

Sometimes, however, less cross-sectional area is removed to "get more life" out of the rod, Batchelor said.

Such is the case for a circle track engine builder who was having some problems with connecting rods. "We did some testing with him first [with C107], and he liked what he saw," Batchelor said. "He's changed his entire program to this material."

The customer chose an option where he saved about 10% to 15% in weight—not quite the maximum 16. "He wanted a little safety in there, so we left it a little heavier," he said. "That was for longevity."
