Formula 1 and the FIA have confirmed the six venues that will host F1 Sprint events during the 2026 season, including three new locations, and an official partnership with Gatorade.

While most of the 24-race season will follow the traditional Grand Prix weekend format, six events--about a quarter of the calendar--will feature an F1 Sprint. The Sprint is a short-format race covering 100 km (just over 62 miles), roughly one-third the distance of a Grand Prix, and lasting about 30 minutes. Sprint weekends are staged at circuits known for strong overtaking opportunities. Pit stops are permitted but generally not advantageous due to the race's short length.

The 2026 season will mark the sixth year of the Sprint format and coincide with the introduction of new technical regulations. The first Sprint will take place in Shanghai, followed by Miami, with both circuits hosting a Sprint for the third consecutive year. Silverstone returns to the Sprint schedule for the first time since the format's debut in 2021, while Montreal, Zandvoort, and Singapore will host their first-ever Sprint weekends.

2026 F1 Sprint Calendar

Date Country Venue
March 13-15        China Shanghai
May 1-3 USA Miami
May 22-24 Canada Montreal
July 3-5 Great Britain       Silverstone
August 21-23 Netherlands Zandvoort
October 9-11 Singapore Singapore

"The F1 Sprint has continued to grow in positive impact and popularity since it was introduced in 2021. With four competitive sessions rather than two during a conventional Grand Prix weekend, F1 Sprint events offer more action each day for our fans, broadcast partners, and for the promoters--driving increased attendance and viewership," said Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1.

The FIA has also published the official start times for all 2026 Grands Prix, which can be found here.

Avoiding Valvetrain Failures

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 09/16/2025 - 15:05
Valvetrain

When a four-stroke, two-valve-per-cylinder, pushrod engine operates at 6,000 rpm, the intake and exhaust valves are opening and closing 50 times per second. And that's at only six grand, where some engines are just waking up.

Building a valvetrain to handle those kinds of stresses and at the same time produce power under competition conditions requires paying attention to a lot of moving parts.

"It isn't just flow; it isn't just lift. There's a lot of things you have to worry about in the valvetrain as an engine builder," said Claude Holguin of CHE Precision, Newbury Park, California. "All this has to work together."

Holguin was one of several valvetrain experts we spoke to about how to keep a valvetrain from failing under race conditions. In what follows, we'll unpack in greater detail those "lots of things" he referred to.

Lobe Design

Camshaft lobe design plays a big role in "being easy on valvetrain parts," said Bobby Biancaniello of Cam Motion, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. "To look at the valvetrain and why valvetrain parts fail, you have to start with the camshaft, especially in hydraulic roller applications. If you're trying to accelerate the valve off the seat extremely quickly, you can piss off a hydraulic lifter pretty easily. And if you have some deflection on opening, you're definitely going to have some seat bounce on the closing. That's hard on valve seats, it's hard on valves, and the valve springs won't last as long."

"If a part deflects—be it a rocker arm, a pushrod, a retainer—kind of bowing a little bit, all of those become springs," said Chris Potter of COMP Cams, Memphis, Tennessee. "They absorb energy, and then they give energy back. The more we understand that and help control that through lobe design, the better the engine is going to perform."

Lifers & Pushrods

"The bottom line is, the bigger the lifter, the stronger the lifter," said Guy Aguayo of Crower Cams & Equipment, San Diego, California. "We sell an 0.842-, 0.874-, 0.903-, and a 0.937-inch lifter. On the Fuel end, the big lifter is 1.062-inch. We sell them in needle bearing and bushing styles."

Crower's oiling recommendation for both kinds of lifters is a HIPPO system, which stands for high-pressure pin oiling. "It feeds oil to either the bushing or the needle bearing as the engine has oil pressure," Aguayo said. "In the golden days—or let's call it a few years ago—you would just rely on splash oiling, the splash coming from the rotating of the engine. That doesn't cut it anymore."

Bigger is better thinking holds true for pushrods as well, Aguayo said. "The more spring pressure, the more pushrod you're going to need to keep them from flexing. You don't want it to flex, because you're losing camshaft lift out of the flex of the pushrod."

Pushrod length is important "to get the proper geometry," said Jay Ryan of S.B. International (SBI), Nashville, Tennessee. "Even though the engine might be based on an OEM design, that doesn't necessarily mean that's the geometry you should go after, because there's going to be a lot of changes in that geometry, with rocker arm ratio, lengths of valves, tip lengths of valves—all those things factor into that pushrod length."

He also said to "use hardened chromoly pushrods, especially when you're dealing with high lift cams and higher rpm. This will assist in avoiding deflection or breakage. Pushrods tend to bend a little. So a chromoly hardened rod, with an 0.080-inch wall thickness, is very common."

Pontiac's Mystique Lives On

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 09/16/2025 - 14:59
Pontiac's Mystique Lives On

Pontiac. Its name was derived from the famous indigenous war chieftain, known for his rebellious fighting spirit and willpower to oppose British troops operating in the modern-day Great Lakes region of Michigan. Chief Pontiac became the emblem for the General Motors performance brand in 1926. More than 80 years later, on April 27, 2009, GM announced it would discontinue the brand. The last Pontiac production vehicle rolled out of the Orion Assembly Plant in January 2010. Fanatics around the world carry on the legacy of Pontiac Motor Division (PMD) through the only way they know how—racing, and more specifically, through drag racing.

Dismantling The Misconceptions

The Butler family began its Pontiac relationship in the mid-1980s when Jim Butler restored his first 1965 GTO. "I was surprised by how much interest he had, and people wanted to buy it, so he sold it, restored another one—and had the same thing happen again," said Jim's son David of Butler Performance, Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. The company started as a car lot and scaled up to a performance shop circa 1988. Jim Butler also leased and ran the local track—US 43 Dragway—where David and his brother Rodney spent most of their time growing up.

"He got me a 1977 Trans Am when I was 12," reminisced David. "At the same time, he was buying and selling GTOs and Trans Ams, putting them out and restoring them. That was the business." Shortly after, popularity grew for Jim Butler Performance. The two brothers would eventually rebrand it Butler Performance years later.

"The number one thing we heard over and over was, 'Why are you trying to run a Pontiac? It's so much cheaper, and so much easier to put a small block or a big block Chevy in it,'" Butler chuckled and added, "Pontiac guys have been hearing this for a long time. But dad was a Pontiac guy.

"In the late 1990s, I went 7.60 [in the quarter mile], and in the early 2000s, I went 6.90 at 265 mph in a GTO," he said. Butler Performance, with a select few other businesses, demonstrated that Pontiac was still a force to be reckoned with, dismantling the misconceptions about building Pontiac engines. "When you start doing that [fast passes], and seeing that, you realize we're past those 'limitations.' That was just knowledge and parts availability. In general, there wasn't actually a problem with the engine designs."

Influenced by people like Jim Butler and drag racer Arnie "The Farmer" Beswick, Vic Edelbrock Jr. developed Performer RPM cylinder heads for their beloved Pontiacs in 1995—heads that contributed to Butler's success on track.

"Even though it probably didn't make financial sense for Edelbrock," he still loved Pontiacs, not just big block or small block Chevys or Fords, said Butler. "I was fortunate to work with him. When we got the first run, he called me from the foundry, and he was going over things, and he was excited about it."

Butler expressed how proud and honored he and his family are, having worked with Edelbrock personally on what he referred to as "our little project." He mentioned Edelbrock's excitement, "after all those years," as a token of regard that Edelbrock still had for the Pontiac racing community.

An average of 1.36 million viewers watched the 17-race schedule that led to the history-making championship of Alex Palou, the first three-peat series title winner in 14 years.

"Our growth is industry-leading and will only accelerate faster as we continue our powerful partnership with FOX Sports and increase investment in our events," Penske Entertainment Corp. Formula E Confirms Second All-Women Test

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 09/16/2025 - 12:00
Formula E

Formula E and the FIA have confirmed that they will host the second iteration of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship All-Women's Test in Valencia, Spain, on Friday, October 31, as part of the official pre-season test program ahead of the 2025-26 season.

Following last year's dedicated test, the program returns with double the track time available for up to 20 elite women drivers, with all 10 Formula E teams taking part. Each driver will run the current GEN3 Evo race car, the same car raced by current Formula E drivers and supported by the same team infrastructure as their championship counterparts.

Each team in the championship is required to field at least one woman driver for the full-day session, with teams having the option to enter two women drivers, all competing in current-season cars.

Last season's inaugural test created meaningful pathways for drivers, series officials said, with five women going on to secure rookie or official development roles, with three moving into permanent, ongoing positions within Formula E teams.

In parallel, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship will also host a special edition of the FIA Girls on Track program on the same day as the all-women's test for up to 100 local young women, offering hands-on educational workshops and the chance to meet the drivers and teams, building visibility, engagement and pathways for women looking to enter the motorsports ecosystem.
