New SEMA Emissions Certification Program Helps Manufacturers Get Products To Market Faster

New SEMA Emissions Certification Program Helps Manufacturers Get Products To Market Faster

SEMA has introduced a new program to make it possible for automotive aftermarket parts manufacturers to meet the legal requirement for emissions compliance under the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Tampering Policy. The program, called SEMA Certified-Emissions (SC-E), gives manufacturers the ability to verify that a product meets the EPA’s “reasonable basis” criteria and is therefore legal for sale in 49 states.

For the first time ever, manufacturers have a clear, accelerated path to compliance and can begin selling products legally in 49 states prior to receiving a California Air Resources Board (CARB) Executive Order (EO), which is still a requirement for selling products in all 50 states.

“It’s now easier than ever for manufacturers to demonstrate emissions compliance,” said Mike Spagnola, SEMA VP of OEM & Product Development Programs. “SEMA Certified-Emissions is a major accomplishment in accelerating a manufacturer’s ability to get products to market, and it paves the path to obtaining emissions compliance in all 50 states.”

Since 2014, the SEMA Garage has been instrumental in helping automotive aftermarket parts manufacturers obtain CARB EOs. With state-of-the-art CARB-recognized testing equipment and dedicated expert staff conducting tests and assisting with the process, the SEMA Garage has helped secure more than 500 CARB EOs – over half of all performance parts EOs issued by CARB.

The new SC-E program is comparable to CARB EO requirements and was developed in response to the EPA’s Tampering Policy. SEMA staff will assess manufacturers’ needs and advise as to the most appropriate path forward, whether that includes applying for a CARB EO or SEMA emissions certification. SC-E may help manufacturers get to market about three months before obtaining a CARB EO. SC-E is also ideal for products that may not have a clear path in the CARB EO process (such as Flex-Fuel modifications, HCT equipped intakes, and engine packages).

“SC-E gives manufacturers much greater options and opportunities,” said Peter Treydte, SEMA Director of Emissions Compliance. “This is a significant milestone in the industry’s ability to provide products to consumers. We look forward to working with members and helping them go to market with SEMA Certified-Emissions products.”

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has acquired the Historic Sportscar Racing (HSR) series.

HSR is known for its vintage and historic sports car racing, including its trio of HSR Classics events at Daytona International Speedway and Sebring International Raceway, plus its HSR Mitty event at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta.

“Bringing HSR into the IMSA family substantially strengthens the links to previous generations of sports car racing, from eras that predate IMSA all the way through to cars that have competed in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship,” said IMSA President John Doonan.

The 2022 HSR season opens with the annual Spring Fling at Sebring on April 6–8.

HSR becomes the eighth racing series to be sanctioned by IMSA, joining the WeatherTech Championship, IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge, IMSA Prototype Challenge, and its four single-make series: Ferrari Challenge North America, Idemitsu Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires, Lamborghini Super Trofeo North America, and Porsche Carrera Cup North America.

How A Bill Becomes A Law: What’s Next For The RPM Act

How A Bill Becomes A Law: What’s Next For The RPM Act

How does a bill become a law? That question is like someone asking how to build a winning race car; it’s a little bit more complicated than it may first appear. There are several ways to get it done, and it’s certainly harder to do than one would hope. It also takes more time and more money than you initially thought.

A bill, just like a race car, starts with an idea. The Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act, known as the RPM Act, started as a simple idea: to protect Americans’ right to convert street vehicles into dedicated race cars and the motorsports industry’s ability to sell products that enable racers to compete.

This video explains the paths a bill can take to become a law and the possible obstacles along the way.

If you support the RPM Act and want to see this critical bill become a law, PRI urges you to share this video with several of your friends, write letters to your lawmakers telling them to pass the bill, and do everything in your power to keep the RPM Act top of mind until it becomes a law.

If you love racing, the RPM Act is critical to protect Americans’ right to convert street vehicles into dedicated race cars, and the motorsports parts industry’s ability to sell products that enable racers to compete.

For more information, visit saveourracecars.com.

The RPM Act is one of the many advocacy efforts supported by PRI Membership, which is actively working to address challenges and needs, such as providing support for race tracks to prevent them from closing, advocacy for the racing community against current legal threats, and educational programs that help businesses and racers succeed. AVD Motorsports Presents ‘Save Our Racecars Night’ At Wenatchee Valley Super Oval

AVD Motorsports Presents ‘Save Our Racecars Night’ At Wenatchee Valley Super Oval

AVD Motorsports has announced that the Wenatchee Valley Super Oval will present a night of racing on April 16, to bring attention to the Performance Racing Industry (PRI) and its “Save Our Racecars” initiative.

The Save Our Racecars Night at Wenatchee, known as the fastest quarter-mile in the Northwest, will feature three classes of racing along with a spectacular fireworks show. In addition to superb on-track action, the event will highlight PRI’s Save Our Racecars campaign, a crucial initiative to preserve motorsports in North America.

Save Our Racecars Night seeks to grow interest and membership in PRI and to build grassroots support for the vital Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act 2021 (H.R.3281/S.2736). The RPM Act is a bipartisan bill in the U.S. Congress that protects Americans’ right to convert street vehicles into dedicated race cars by clarifying in federal statute that it is legal to make emissions-related changes to a street vehicle for the purpose of converting it into a dedicated track vehicle used in motorsports competition. The bill also enshrines in law the racing industry’s ability to produce, market, and install parts and equipment that enable racers to compete.

“The RPM Act is essential to racing and we are determined to pass it in this Congress,” said Dr. Jamie Meyer, President of PRI. “We are thrilled to sponsor Save Our Racecars Night to highlight this important issue that affects all racers and racing enthusiasts. I ask racers and race fans to head to saveourracecars.com and urge your lawmakers to take action.”

PRI is leading the effort to pass the RPM Act, which is crucial to the future of motorsports. Competition and performance rights are under threat from those who want to attack those freedoms through government overreach and interference.

“I couldn’t be more honored to bring this evening celebration of racing to life,” AVD Motorsports CEO Ashley Van Dyke said. “PRI’s Save Our Racecars Initiative and the RPM Act are so important for our industry beyond just one night. Having grown up attending races from my childhood in Washington and knowing the importance of motorsports as economic drivers to our local communities, we can take nothing for granted and must continue to support our sport’s long-term future. In order to preserve the sport, we need to do more, and I hope this evening underlines the bold initiatives that our trade associations are undertaking on our behalf to protect and grow motorsport as we know it.”

For more than three decades, PRI has served as the motorsports industry’s key source for trends, merchandising ideas, new products, business strategies, and more. Through the world’s premier auto racing trade show in Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as PRI’s award-winning monthly business magazine, digital platforms and social networks, motorsports industry members from all over the world remain at the cutting edge of the worldwide racing marketplace.

PRI will be on site at Wenatchee promoting its individual memberships, and individuals can sign up or learn more about them at performanceracing.com.

Sessler To Be Featured As Evening’s Master Of Ceremonies

Jerrod Sessler will serve as Save Our Racecars Night’s master of ceremonies. Sessler is a former NASCAR driver who is running for Congress in Washington’s 4th District. He has taken up the cause of championing the institution of American racing and intends to advocate on behalf of the motorsports community in Washington.

Sessler has run NASCAR All-American Touring races and has two sons in kart racing, so it’s natural for him to emerge as an important defender of U.S. motorsports and the industry that supports it. He plans to give a speech about the importance of getting involved in and advocating for the racing industry, stressing how it starts right in our own communities and at our local race tracks. Attendees will learn how to get more involved in both his campaign for Congress and the Save our Racecars and RPM Act campaign, as well as how to take action.

Learn more about Jerrod Sessler’s run for Congress here, or follow him on Twitter at @Sessler.

Tickets for the Save Our Racecars Night event will be available in 2022 from the Wenatchee Oval website at wvso.com.
