The National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and the Bandimere family have jointly announced that the 2023 Dodge Power Brokers NHRA Mile-High Nationals (July 14-16) will be the last NHRA national event at Bandimere Speedway just outside of Denver.

The Bandimere family has agreed to sell the current property and land in Morrison, Colorado, but plans to relocate the historic NHRA-sanctioned drag strip to another location in the Denver area, officials said.

"Our family has been involved in the automotive business for the past three generations through parts sales and machining, individual racing competition, industry innovations, and the operation of our speedway in the beautiful Colorado foothills," said John Bandimere Jr., second-generation track owner and operator. "We have been blessed to occupy one of the most unique places in our state and feel that our commitment to the sport is not done yet. It's part of the fabric of our family's life, and we're hopeful that another equally unique location can be found to continue the legacy that was started by my parents over six decades ago."

In addition, the NHRA leadership team has announced discussions with current NHRA member tracks not currently on the NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series circuit to host future national events, including replacing the Denver date on the 2024 schedule.

NHRA and the Bandimere family invite racers and fans to be part of the last NHRA Mile-High Nationals, July 14-16. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the Bandimere website here.

SAE International Awards Alba Colón With Rodica Baranescu Award

SAE International logo

Alba Colón, the director of competition systems at Hendrick Motorsports, has been honored by SAE International as a recipient of the 2022 Rodica Baranescu Award for Technical & Leadership Excellence.

The Rodica Baranescu Award, established in 2011 by SAE International, celebrates the successes of women in the engineering profession and recognizes their leadership and technical contributions across aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle sectors. The award is named after the mechanical engineer and past president of SAE International, Baranescu.

"You don't do this job because you are expecting awards," Colón said in a Hendricks Motorsports release. "The only awards to expect are the ones that happen on most Sundays between 6 and 7 p.m. (when the race is won). We did a great job, and we are going to win that race. For me, those are the awards that we work hard for.

"That somebody thought highly enough of you to nominate you and to go through the whole process, means a lot. That means somebody has noticed what you have been doing, but once again, you don't do your job expecting an award. You do it because it is the right thing to do and because you want to make a difference. It was very nice surprise."

Ford Performance has unveiled the Mustang Super Cobra Jet 1800, described as an aggressive revision to the NHRA world-record-holding Mustang Cobra Jet 1400. It is targeted to best the Cobra Jet 1400's standing world record for full-bodied electric vehicles (EVs) in the quarter-mile, 8.128 seconds at 171.97 mph.

The Super Cobra Jet 1800 utilizes the same four PN-250-DZR inverters coupled to two double-stacked DS-250-115 motor pairings as before, but now attached to a new transmission from Liberty and powered by an entirely redone, lighter-weight battery system designed by Ford Performance and MLe Racecars. The power is sent to an MLe Racecars-revised rear end featuring improved suspension geometry from PMR and larger Mickey Thompson drag radials to optimize launches.

"Our changes have made significant improvements to the car, including removing hundreds of pounds in weight and increasing horsepower to 1800," explained Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports.

On top of going for a new full-bodied EV record, the Super Cobra Jet 1800 will also attempt to claim records for fastest EV 0-60 mph and fastest two-wheel-drive EV 0-60 during an NHRA event later this season. MLe Racecar's cofounder and official program test driver Pat McCue is planned to be in the driver's seat.
