Matt Curl, owner and promoter of Fairbury Speedway in Livingston County, Illinois, has been named a keynote speaker for the upcoming Racing Promotion Monthly (RPM) Workshops in Reno and Daytona, where he will share his experience as a track owner, promoter, race director and series director.

Curl has worked across multiple areas of short-track racing, including serving as a World of Outlaws Late Model Series official, race director and series director. He returned to Fairbury in 2019 and became majority owner of the 1/4-mile dirt track, while also taking on roles with the Wild West Shootout, MARS Late Model and Modified Championship Series and major events at Eldora Speedway in Ohio.

PRI Ambassador Tom Deery recently spoke with RPM about Curl's selection and pointed to the Prairie Dirt Classic as an example of the type of in-person event experience that can distinguish a short track.

"I'm sure it looked great on the stream, but man, you had to be there," Deery said. "There was so much going on. It is an incredible event."

The 2026-27 RPM Workshop schedule includes RPM @ Reno Western Workshops, set for December 1-3, 2026, at the Silver Legacy Resort in Reno, Nevada, followed by RPM @ Daytona, tentatively scheduled for February 14-16, 2027, at The Shores Resort in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida.

PRI Staging Lanes: Planning Early for a Successful Show

Submitted by ajh on Fri, 08/28/2026 - 14:59
A turbocharger on display at the PRI Show.

Championships are hotly being contested while race teams and tracks are putting the finishing touches on their 2026 seasons. As the heat of summer begins to fade, the racing industry turns to plans for the 2027 season, and that strategizing often includes the 2026 Performance Racing Industry (PRI) Show.

Although the motorsports trade show doesn’t take place until December 10–12, early planning is one of the key components to a successful venture while in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Debuting new products and equipment, connecting with suppliers, acquiring new business, technical, or industry knowledge, it all can be found at the PRI Show, which will take place in the Indiana Convention Center (ICC) and Lucas Oil Stadium (LOS). Attendee registration is now open for the 38th edition of the motorsports trade show.

With each edition, the PRI Show incorporates plenty of new components to lead the industry and offer racing businesspeople a notable ROI. Beginning this year, an individual PRI membership will no longer be required to attend. Instead, a tiered-pricing schedule has been implemented. Based on feedback from PRI attendees, we transitioned to a simplified model with a fee for Show access rather than maintaining a membership structure. For those registering by October 1, the cost is $45. From October 3 to December 9, the cost increases to $55 to attend, and on-site registration will be $65. Visit performanceracing.com/tradeshow to register.

Education Focus

PRI is a gathering place to learn about the newest products, equipment, and market trends, but this year’s event has a special element that is focused squarely on bringing together some of the best in the industry with those who seek a motorsports career.

Since race engineers are tasked with creating new innovations and resolving situations that sometimes don’t quite go as planned, PRI introduces its Motorsports Engineering Symposium (MES) where engineers from race teams and manufacturers alike will gather to strengthen the connection between engineering theory and real-world race application.

Unlike traditional education sessions, the content is built around real-world case studies and engineering challenges; practical solutions that impact speed, reliability, and performance; open dialogue between professional engineers and technical leaders; and direct interaction between industry and emerging engineering talent.

Scheduled for Thursday, December 10, this engineering-focused conference will be located in ICC meeting rooms 237–239 and begin at 10:00 a.m. after the Grand Opening Breakfast. The first two sessions of the day will be “From Simulation to Track: Closing the Performance Gap” and “Powertrain & Thermal Limits: Where Performance Breaks.” The program pauses for a networking lunch from 12:00 p.m. – 1:15 p.m. and then picks up with two more sessions titled “Building the Next Race Engineer: Closing the Talent Gap” and “Materials & Manufacturing: Speed to Track.” The full-day event will conclude with a panel at 4:00 p.m. who will discuss “The Future of Motorsports Engineering.”

MES registration is free for qualified engineers but everyone who attends must have a PRI Show badge. Visit performanceracing.com/trade-show/attend to register.

Young adults, including high school and college students, who are seeking a career in motorsports, can find plentiful resources to help them at the new NextGen Connect, located in Wabash 1 and 2, in aisle 7100 of the ICC’s Green Hall. Meet with a human resources executive to review a resume, get a high-quality head-and-shoulders photo taken by a professional photographer, meet with career experts and exhibitors, pick up valuable tips about being in the workforce from carefully crafted seminars, and network with others in the industry.

NextGen Connect will be open all three days of the PRI Show.

Students will also benefit from the return of the annual Student Program Industry Networking Breakfast, which will begin at 7:45 a.m. on Friday, December 11, in the Sagamore Ballroom, upstairs in the ICC. This year’s Breakfast will again offer students a complimentary hot breakfast as they hear a welcome message about opportunities in the racing industry and how they can get involved. After the Breakfast, students can meet with a variety of exhibiting companies who will also have a table set up in the Sagamore Ballroom where company representatives will speak directly with students.

Females who are just getting started in motorsports or are seeking a career in this vibrant industry can join the Gear Up Girl Lunch, presented by the SEMA Businesswomen’s Network (SBN). This networking event allows young women to meet with and learn from other women who are firmly established in their racing careers. These veterans are eager to share advice and knowledge to encourage the next generation to pursue motorsports careers. The networking lunch takes place from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in ICC Meeting Rooms 208–209. To register, contact Nicole Bradle at nicoleb@sema.org.

PRI is a place to share knowledge, and learning opportunities are available everywhere for new or established industry members. Continuing down the knowledge gathering path, the PRI Education program returns on Friday, December 11, also in ICC Meeting Rooms 237–239, with four sessions specifically for motorsports professionals. Details about these seminars will be included in the PRI Show Guide, which is the November edition

Business Profile: Shaw Race Cars

Submitted by ajh on Fri, 08/28/2026 - 14:56

Shaw-built modifieds win, consistently, year after year, and they have been winning for nearly five decades. "We've probably built 5,800 or 5,900 race cars in that time," estimated Kevin Shaw, son of founder Larry Shaw, "and I would say that 1,000–1,200 are still racing."

In the shop's hometown of Batesville, Arkansas, and the surrounding region, Shaw chassis generally account for "30%–40%" of modified starting grids. Even "as you branch out," Shaw added, "it's going to be 10%." For a company with cars running in 40 states, including Alaska, that's a significant share of the action.

Larry Shaw established Larry Shaw Racing in 1979 to build Late Models and modifieds. He dropped the former to focus on the latter in 2010 and released his innovative XL chassis in 2016. He retired in 2019, selling the shop to Arkansas entrepreneurs Scott and Marlene Mosley. Production of Late Model chassis resumed in 2023, but modifieds remain Shaw's primary focus.

Listening and Learning

It may be cliché to speak of deep roots in racing, but those roots don't reach much deeper than Kevin Shaw's. In addition to manufacturing race cars, Larry Shaw built the Batesville Motor Speedway. Kevin recalled his father's longtime friendship with Scooter Brothers, former co-owner of COMP Cams, current co-owner of Driven Racing Oil, and recent inductee into the PRI Hall of Fame. Young Kevin knew "the Brotherton boys, who own Brodix; and Doug and Dennis at Schoenfeld Headers. We all grew up together, from little kids at the racetrack to running businesses now."

Asked about the reason for the company's continuing success, Shaw briefly mentioned longevity––"something you don't see a lot of in this business"––but quickly pivoted to "customer service. When people call us up, we treat them like somebody. I'm not saying other car builders don't do that, but we know who they are, and we know where they race. When people pick up racecars from us, they tend to stick around for a day, or half a day, talking setups and familiarizing themselves with the car. When you do that, you build relationships."

Communication continues even after the car leaves the shop. "We listen to our customers when they [tell us] what their cars are doing. We listen to the driver, because not all drivers drive the same." They also drive on different tracks. "One may be racing at a little quarter-mile track where they are on the brakes real heavily––and the next one may be going to Eldora where they are not on the brakes at all."

Shaw's geographic reach brings additional complications. "You have a guy who runs on the East Coast, or the central US, or on the West Coast, or down South, or New Mexico––all those track conditions are different." Rules differ as well. "A B-Mod in Pennsylvania is most likely a four-link car, but here in the Midwest, USRA, IMCA, and WISSOTA all run three-link cars, and they are all different rules packages. All those require different setups."

And did we mention tire rules? "You have a guy on Hoosier G60s, another on M30s, and another on American Racer G60s. All three require different air pressure settings, and stagger comes into play, and different weight limits.

"So you have to listen to the racer."

Shaw has built a computer database to organize this information and uses it to provide his customers with "a good baseline––that's where we want you to start. Call us every week after you race and tell us what the car is doing. Usually, after three or four weeks, we have them handling pretty good."

Knowledge flows in both directions. "When they tell us, 'This worked,' or 'this didn't work,' at this particular racetrack, with this particular tire," that information is added to the system. "Then we take those notes, and we can catch up on our setups a little quicker."

Offering Options

Partly to accommodate all these differences, Shaw offers a choice of chassis. The company's mainstay remains the XL, welded up from DOM (drawn-over-mandrel) mild steel tubing, and featuring one-piece upper A-arms designed and manufactured by Shaw. It was joined in 2023 by the all-chromoly RX, with a redesigned roll cage and conventional, cross-shaft-style A-arms. There are other differences as well. Shaw doesn't like to "get too specific," but said he could steer a customer toward one or the other based on "where he's racing and what rules he's running under." Mainly, however, the two cars offer Shaw customers an alternative. "If a guy has struggled with the XL, that guy is not going to buy the same car again. He wants something different."

Even given a choice of chassis, Shaw accepts that some customers will simply move on. "If a guy's raced my car for a few years and he's run well with it, and then he's getting out-run by another brand, and he wants to go try it––I don't ever get mad at that. He's trying to improve himself. If he does better, that's good for him, and if he doesn't, he'll come back. But if I burn a bridge, he'll never come back."

Customers seem to appreciate this laissez-faire approach. "Even customers who have gone on to buy other brands of racecars still buy products from us, because we've got a good relationship."

Track Operators Push Back on Closure Rumors

Submitted by laurap on Fri, 08/28/2026 - 05:27
Image of small tire drag racing at Dragway 42 aka Darana Dragway West Salem

Despite ongoing uncertainty surrounding the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), dragstrips owned by the company associated with the IHRA continue to operate, according to a recent report by Dragzine's Brian Wagner.

Officials at several Darana-associated facilities told Dragzine that their tracks continue to operate as independent businesses. Each facility operates under its own entity and LLC, with revenue supporting the individual track. That distinction is important as the industry watches the future of the IHRA.

The uncertainty has intensified in recent weeks, with canceled events, reported payment issues and the mid-August closure of a prominent track. A recent analysis by BankruptcyData also examines financial and legal issues involving Darryl Cuttell's Darana businesses and their connection to the IHRA motorsports operation. The report notes that the allegations in the ongoing dispute remain unproven.

Darana Motorsports Holdings LLC, owned by and associated with IHRA owner Darryl Cuttell, is the legal owner of several facilities: Darana Dragway West Salem, Darana Raceway Hebron, Darana Dragway Milan, Darana Motorsports Park, Darana Raceway Xenia, and Empire Dragway. The organization leases Virginia Motorsports Park, while Piedmont Dragway is currently closed for repairs.

Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, which announced its surprise closure in mid-August, is not owned by Darana Motorsports Holdings but rather by the IHRA and Cuttell. It is important to note that maplegroveraceway.com features a "Darana Raceway Maple Grove Park" logo.

Maple Grove Raceway Announces Surprise Closure

Submitted by laurap on Thu, 08/27/2026 - 17:28
Maple Grove Raceway logo

Maple Grove Raceway, the 1/4-mile dragstrip in Mohnton, Pennsylvania, has announced its closure.

The track is reported to be officially owned by the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and Darryl Cuttell as of December last year. However, the track's official website, maplegroveraceway.com, features a "Darana Raceway Maple Grove Park" logo. Darana Motorsports Holdings, LLC, is owned by and associated with IHRA owner Darryl Cuttell.

The track's closure comes amid several IHRA series cancellations. PRI News recently spoke with Bill Bader Jr. about plans to host an event at Summit Motorsports Park if a popular bracket series event is canceled.

The closure announcement below was posted to Maple Grove Raceway's social media and website:

Maple Grove Raceway will be closed and the race schedule suspended for strategic refocusing, restructuring and regrouping. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our racing community, fans, partners and supporters during this unforeseen and challenging time. Additional information and updates on our progress will be shared as they become available.
