Valvoline, the lubricant brand currently located in Lexington, Kentucky, is planning to open a new global headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio, the company announced. Valvoline, which offers the VR1 Racing High Performance High Zinc Motor Oil, also has a long-standing partnership with Hendrick Motorsports and is also the official lubricant partner for the Aston Martin Aramco Formula One team.

The company's current base in Lexington, Kentucky, will remain its central hub for operations in the United States, Canada and Latin America, and will continue to employ more than 400 people.

The company's new global headquarters will be located in downtown Cincinnati, where it expects to invest in a complete revitalization of the 50,000 sq. ft. it will occupy. The move positions executive leadership and global functions minutes away from the company's largest production facility while also providing the space, infrastructure and connectivity necessary for the company's continued growth, Valvoline representatives said. The new space will be designed to accommodate up to 120 employees.

"Today marks an important moment for our company," said Jamal Muashsher, president and chief executive officer of Valvoline Global Operations. "Expanding our presence in Cincinnati and creating our Americas Hub in Lexington provides the space for our teams to better collaborate, innovate and operate more effectively, which will ensure we continue providing top-tier support for our customers worldwide."

The planned renovation and transition to the new global headquarters will happen over the coming months, with the new facility expected to open in the spring of 2027.

RACERSHIP Partners With MNRL and Y0LABS

Submitted by laurap on Mon, 08/24/2026 - 15:41
RacerShip logo

RACERSHIP has partnered with MNRL and Y0LABS to provide branding, content development and media support tools in an effort help grassroots and emerging racers better showcase their accomplishments and prepare for sponsorship opportunities.

RACERSHIP is the motorsports community platform connecting racers, brands and mentors. MNRL is a brand and media consultancy that helps organizations, and Y0LABS is a venture studio applying real-time game-engine technology across entertainment, athlete performance and live production.

The partnership will develop storytelling, creative and production capability across the RACERSHIP ecosystem.

Professional motorsports teams employ photographers, videographers, social managers and communications staff whose full-time job is making sure the world knows what a driver did on Sunday. Below that tier, where most licensed competitors race, the driver is also the media department, shooting content between sessions and assembling sponsorship decks the night before a meeting.

The result is a sport where competitive results and public visibility can come apart. A racer can win consistently, carry a compelling personal story and reach an engaged local audience, and still lose a sponsorship to someone who presented better.

RACERSHIP has spent its development building against that problem, putting racers, mentors, teams and brands in the same place and giving members the tools and education to prepare for sponsorship conversations. The partnership extends that work into what happens after an introduction is made, and into the first deal, according to the organizations.

"RACERSHIP has always been about access ––making sure a racer's opportunities aren't limited by who they already know," said Heidi Bandisch, founder of RACERSHIP. "We built the network that gets people in the room. What our members tell us is that getting in the room isn't the whole job. You have to explain, quickly and well, why you're worth backing. That's the piece we're building next."

The companies describe this as the first stage of a longer program, with specific products, formats and athlete initiatives announced as they become ready.

Ford Mustang Challenge car on track.

Ford Racing has released the 2027 schedule for the Mustang Challenge North America, featuring 12 races held across six different events.

The IMSA-sanctioned one-make series will open the season January 22-24 at Daytona International Speedway as part of the Roar Before the 24 weekend, marking the series' first visit to the Florida circuit. The event precedes the Rolex 24 At Daytona and will put the Mustang Challenge field on the same weekend as the opening event of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The one-make series—which puts drivers behind the wheel of the track-ready Dark Horse R, a car that bridges the gap between a production Dark Horse and a Mustang GT4 race car—will then make stops at Sebring International Raceway, WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, VIRginia International Raceway and Circuit of The Americas before closing out the season at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta on October 6-9.

Following Laguna Seca, the series will hold until August. This extended break is a "global invitational pause," and it is included in the 2027 schedule for each of our one-make series. It ensures any competitors who want to take part in the 2027 Mustang Challenge Spa Invitational have plenty of time to get their personnel and equipment to Belgium and back without missing any rounds of the championship they compete in full time, Ford Racing representatives said.

IMCA Amends Engine Rules to Allow Overbore of 602 and 604 Crate Engines

Submitted by ajh on Mon, 08/24/2026 - 12:25

The International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) has approved a rules amendment allowing both 602 and 604 crate engines to be overbored during authorized major repairs using approved MAHLE pistons and Total Seal rings, effective immediately.

The rules change provides racers with an additional repair option while maintaining the integrity of the crate engine program. All repairs must continue to be completed by an IMCA Authorized Repair Center and must comply with IMCA's existing crate engine repair procedures and sealing requirements.

The following aftermarket replacement components are approved for use during authorized IMCA major repairs:

  • Mahle 602 Pistons: Part No. 9302039
  • Mahle 604 Pistons: Part No. 9301278
  • Total Seal 602 Piston Rings: Part No. CRG2010
  • Total Seal 604 Piston Rings: Part No. CR6264

No other aftermarket pistons or piston rings are approved unless specifically authorized by IMCA. All repairs must otherwise conform to the Factory Circle Track Crate Engine Technical Manual and the current IMCA 602/604 Crate Engine Repair Guide.

All repairs must utilize approved GM Performance Parts, with pistons and piston rings remaining among the approved repair exceptions outlined by IMCA.

Any engine requiring this repair must receive the designated IMCA major repair cable seal package, including the required red "BORED" identification seal and five sequential black seals. All repair documentation must be submitted to MCA before the engine is returned to competition.

"This amendment provides a cost-effective option when repairing a crate engine while continuing to preserve the consistency our racers expect," said IMCA President Brett Root. "By allowing approved overbore repairs with specific MAHLE pistons through our Authorized Repair Center network, we can extend the service life of these engines without compromising the integrity of the IMCA crate engine program."

Questions regarding the amended crate engine repair rules should be directed to IMCA Competition Director Dave Brenn at 785-307-8482 or IMCA at 319-472-2201.

Drill Down on Your Oil: Lubrication Trends in Racing

Submitted by ajh on Mon, 08/24/2026 - 09:39
Drill Down on Your Oil graphic.

The extreme heat and power produced by today's race engines make it more necessary than ever for teams to have the proper oils and lubricants.

Manufacturers of these products have prioritized three factors relative to making sure your choices are on-target: lower viscosity, additives, and application-specific products.

The reason more low-viscosity oils are being used in racing is simple: It's the engine, said Steffen Niemietz of Liqui Moly USA in Irvine, California. "Modern engine designs, among other things, require low-viscosity oils to function efficiently and with maximum performance due to the very low component tolerances and tight fits."

Additive packages built into race oil also remain critical, according to Stephen Plopper of Schaeffer's Specialized Lubricants, St. Louis, Missouri. "Every little bit of these add packs, and how they're made up and how the chemistries work together, are very important. And then that base oil is what holds everything together."

A good example of application-specific lubricants are the Adrenaline R-Series racing oils from Hot Shot's Secret. Their features include increased thermal stability, a trait "absolutely" connected to the prevalence of turbochargers, superchargers, nitrous oxide, and aggressive engine tuning, reported Josh Steinmetz from the Mt. Gilead, Ohio, firm. "All [of those] dramatically increase combustion heat and overall oil temperatures."

Read on as we dive deeper into the subject with input from these and other top racing lubricant providers.

Through Thick and Thin

There is a clear trend toward lower viscosity racing oils, as is the case with passenger car and heavy-duty diesel engine oils, said Chris Mileti of Klotz Synthetic Lubricants, Fort Wayne, Indiana. "Lower viscosity oils are being introduced to improve fuel efficiency [in highway applications] and power output [in racing applications]."

Vehicle manufacturers and oil suppliers have done extensive testing over the past two decades to identify technologies that reduce frictional losses from motor oil, and massive improvements have been made. "However, friction modifiers still cannot match the impact of significantly lowering the fluid viscosity," Mileti said.

Klotz's Pure Estorlin Racing 0W-16 Engine Oil, entering its third season of production and gaining momentum in stock and super stock drag racing, is an example of a low-viscosity product. "[Its] formulation is fundamentally different than any other racing oil currently manufactured by Klotz," Mileti said. "It is optimized for short-duration, low-temperature operation while our other racing oils are designed for long durations at high temperatures."

The 0W-16 has consistently yielded improvements of three or more horsepower during internal dyno testing, and "some of the teams running this oil have used the same connecting rod bearings for multiple seasons," he said.

On average, racing oils are lighter than they've ever been, agreed Jaret Lozano of VP Racing Fuels, San Antonio, Texas. VP's Pro Stock Drag Racing Oil is a low-viscosity option engineered to meet the demands of engines producing more power per cubic inch than ever, he said. "The fluid pours like water yet provides the crazy amount of performance required to run low ETs round after round."

The trend will slow, however, "as you can only go so low" in viscosity, he added.

It Adds Up

Additives are an essential part of today's lubricants, but Steinmetz said the term is often oversimplified or misused. All of Hot Shot's oils and fuels contain additives—anti-wear agents, friction modifiers, detergents, dispersants, corrosion inhibitors, and cetane—and there is intent with each.

"For racers, the value of additives lies in targeted performance and protection," he said. "Additives can significantly extend component life, reduce parasitic loss, and support consistent power output, especially in extreme-duty motorsports environments."

Art Kendrick at Red Line Oil, Houston, Texas, said the company uses the highest quality base stocks and in-house-engineered additive packages to ensure its products can withstand the harshest performance environments without separate additives. "Being manufactured with PAO/ester base stocks gives you a more stable starting point," he said about manmade polyalphaolefins (PAOs) and polyolesters (POEs) used in synthetic oils. "It naturally gives greater protection and a wider viscosity range due to its chemistry compared to Group II and III [petroleum] products that must have more additives to make them perform."

Former IMSA Owner, Executive and Competitor Charlie Slater, 69

Submitted by ajh on Fri, 08/21/2026 - 14:52
Charlie Slater

Former IMSA owner, chief executive officer (CEO) and competitor Charlie Slater passed away last Saturday in South Florida following an extended illness, IMSA announced. He was 69.

"IMSA, at its core values, has always been a culture of family––the IMSA racing family," said IMSA President John Doonan. "The loss of Charlie has hit all of us hard. The positive impact he has had on the IMSA community over the years has been discussed and recognized by so many legends of IMSA in recent days. It is with heavy hearts that we will go racing this week at VIR, but also with the same 'IMSA family' spirit that Charlie represented. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of Charlie's family and loved ones."

A hugely successful and ground-breaking engineering executive, Slater purchased IMSA in 1993 and guided the sanctioning body through 1996––including the transition from the GTP prototype headlining class to the open-cockpit World Sports Cars. He is credited with bringing aboard Exxon as a primary series sponsor before ultimately selling the IMSA series in the Fall of 1996.

Slater's deep love of the sport and respect for those in the paddock never wavered through the decades whether he was a part of the starting grid, according to the sanctioning body, leading the series' executive meetings or there to support someone else.

The Fort Lauderdale native drove Porsches and shared cockpits with some of the biggest names in the sport like Bill Auberlen, Tommy Kendall and Kevin Jeannette.

He podiumed in two Rolex 24 At Daytona starts––finishing third in the GT3 class in 1998 standing alongside a star-filled podium that included Auberlen, Boris Said and Peter Cunningham.

Four times Slater competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, sharing the cockpit of the Konrad Porsche with Kendall and Jürgen von Gartzen in 2000 and earning what would be his best ever finish in the race, 14th overall.

For more on Slater's life and career, see IMSA's full tribute to Slater on imsa.com.
