PRI, SEMA Urge for Reopening of Moab Trails, Back Senate Bills to Expand Disability Access

Submitted by ajh on Fri, 10/31/2025 - 14:49
Moab Trails

PRI, SEMA Urge U.S. Bureau Of Land Management to Reopen OHV Trails in Moab, Utah

SEMA late last week voiced strong support for a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) proposal to reopen nearly 150 miles of off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails throughout Labyrinth Rims/Gemini Bridges Travel Management Area near Moab, Utah. In comments submitted to the BLM, SEMA highlighted motorized recreation as an integral part of Moab's economy and the cultural benefits of restoring motorized access to one of the nation's most popular off-road destinations.

  • SEMA opposed the BLM's 2022 draft Labyrinth Rims/Gemini Bridges Travel Management Plan (TMP), which ultimately closed nearly 300 miles of trails to motorized vehicles. With the Trump   Administration's proposal to reopen nearly 150 miles of these trails, SEMA and its members voiced strong support for the BLM's plans to reopen trails that are enjoyed by OHV enthusiasts from around the country who support the $720 billion motorized outdoor recreation industry.

"All too frequently in the past, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) aggressively pursued closures of trails enjoyed by the off-road and motorized recreation community, including some of the most sacred areas accessed for decades by off-highway vehicle (OHV) enthusiasts," said SEMA Senior Vice President for Public and Government Affairs Karen Bailey-Chapman in the organization's comments. "SEMA thanks the BLM for addressing past errors and restarting efforts to reopen routes in the Labyrinth Rims/Gemini Bridges Travel Management Area. This proposal is critical to restoring necessary access for thousands of OHV enthusiasts who recreate on these trails. It is also of critical importance to all the businesses that depend on members of the off-road community, many of whom travel to the Moab area each year with their friends and families."

PRI, SEMA Back Senate Bills to Expand Off-Road Access for Americans with Disabilities

U.S. Senator Mike Lee (R-UT), Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, has introduced a trio of SEMA-supported bills focused on expanding motorized recreational access to government-owned lands. This legislative package includes the "Outdoor Americans with Disabilities Act," a bill that would expand motorized trail access to ensure individuals with disabilities can access federal and state-owned public lands, which earned SEMA's support by providing important assurances of motorized access to public lands that will benefit the community as a whole.

Currently, large portions of federally managed lands restrict motorized access, which creates a barrier that prevents individuals with disabilities from accessing public lands. The bill ties disability access to the availability of open roads by requiring that one square mile of public land must have at least 2.5 miles of authorized roads accessible to motorized vehicles.

SEMA is proud to support efforts to make our public lands more accessible to individuals with disabilities.

"SEMA thanks Senator Lee for reintroducing the Outdoor Americans with Disabilities Act," said Bailey-Chapman. "This bill would ensure that federal lands, including our nation's natural treasures, can be enjoyed by and are accessible to all Americans. For far too long, federal land management policies have reduced motorized recreational access to public lands at the expense of the disabled and large segments of the U.S. population who are not physically able to enjoy them. Sen. Lee's legislation is a welcome policy shift in the name of access for the American people."

Legislation Details

S. 2968 – the "Outdoor Americans with Disabilities Act"

  • Greatly expands access to government lands, including those managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forrest Service, for individuals with disabilities.
  • Defines "disability-accessible land" as public land on which at least 2.5 miles of authorized roads accessible to motorized or off-road vehicles exist for each square mile.
  • Directs the Interior Department and the Forest Service to update travel management plans to ensure that each square mile of public land has a minimum of 2.5 miles of roads accessible to motorized vehicles.
  • Requires land managers to coordinate with state, county, local, and tribal governments to identify which roads provide the best opportunities for recreation and to give local stakeholders a voice before any road is closed.
  • Prevents roads from being closed if doing so would cause an area to fall short of accessibility requirements, except in cases of emergency or significant safety threats.
  • Requires road closures to be paired with the designation of alternative routes.

S. 2969 – State Motor Vehicle Laws in National Park System Units

  • Amends federal law governing the National Park Service to clarify that the state laws in which a "System unit" is located shall apply to the use of motor vehicles (including off-highway vehicles) on roads within that unit.
  • Create consistency and predictability.

S. 2970 – A bill to authorize the use of off-highway vehicles in certain areas of the Capitol Reef National Park, Utah

  • Authorizes OHV use on the following roads within Capitol Reef National Park, Utah: Burr Trail Road, Cathedral Road, Hartnet Road, Highway 24, Notom Bullfrog Road, Polk Creek Road, Oil Well Bench Road, Baker Ranch Road, South Desert Overlook Road, Temple of the Sun and Moon Road, Gypsum Sinkhole Road, and Sulphur Creek Road.
  • Clarifies that Utah's motor vehicle laws, including those for OHVs, apply to these designated roads.

Industry Insights: Mario Andretti

Submitted by ajh on Fri, 10/31/2025 - 14:22
Mario Andretti

The name Mario Andretti is synonymous with greatness in motorsports. His resume justifies the accolades: 1967 Daytona 500 winner, 1969 Indianapolis 500 and Pikes Peak International Hill Climb champion, 1974 USAC National Dirt Track Championship, 1978 Formula 1 World Champion, 1979 International Race of Champions (IROC) series championship, four IndyCar national titles, three 12 Hours of Sebring victories. In fact, he was named Driver of the Year in three different decades (the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s), Driver of the Quarter Century (in the 1990s), and the Associated Press named him Driver of the Century in January 2000. After completing his five-decade-long racing career, Andretti retired with 111 feature race victories.

The Italian-born Andretti arrived in the United States with his parents, older sister, and twin brother Aldo in 1955 when he was 15 years old. His passion for motorsports had already developed. The previous year, he and Aldo attended the Italian Grand Prix, where he cheered on his favorite driver, Alberto Ascari.

The Andrettis settled in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Conveniently, a half-mile oval track was located not far from their home. The Andretti twins built a 1948 Hudson Hornet sportsman stock car with some local friends. Mario and Aldo began racing the car, and Mario's career took off as he won 20 races in the sportsman stock car class in 1959 and 1960.

Today, Andretti serves as a spokesman for The Magnaflow Group, which made his PRI Show appearance possible. Occasionally, he can still be found driving a two-seater Indy car around a track that allows a passenger to experience the thrill of open-wheel racing. He stays involved with personal business ventures, including his Andretti Winery in Napa, California.

Andretti will join Speed Sport's Ralph Sheheen on stage at the Grand Opening Breakfast on the opening day of the PRI Show on Thursday, December 11. Doors to the Sagamore Ballroom, upstairs in the Indiana Convention Center, will open at 6:30 a.m., and the program will begin at 7:30 a.m. For more information, visit performanceracing.com.

PRI: You won races in so many disciplines: Formula 1, IndyCar, USAC dirt cars, Pikes Peak, stock cars, road racing, and even drag racing. To what do you attribute that versatility?

Andretti: I attribute it to my pure love of driving. That's saying it lightly. I didn't just love driving. I was totally possessed. Never wanting to quit. My objective when I was starting out at age 21 was to establish myself and be exposed enough to earn a ride in stock cars. After that, midgets. Then sprint cars. Then Indy cars. Then Formula 1. I never wanted to stay where I was. Every category was on my mind. It was just pure desire.

PRI: You remain the only driver in racing history to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500, and Formula 1 World Championship. What are the different skills needed behind the wheel of a NASCAR vehicle compared to an F1 car?

Andretti: The skillset of the driver is basically the same, but the car is different. Each racing car has its own characteristics, including performance limits. The driver has to be able to understand and adapt to those characteristics to get the maximum performance out of each car. It's all about adapting. Most F1 or IndyCar drivers would tend to overdrive a stock car because that car is heavier and slower to respond. It's the job of the driver to understand the car. A driver must be skilled enough to be able to get the most out of each car and identify its limits. Driving an F1 car is like flying a fighter aircraft, while driving a stock car is like flying a bomber.

PRI: You have earned numerous accolades over the last several decades. Are there a few that stand out to you as most prestigious?

Andretti: I am humbled to have received so many accolades. My journey in racing can be credited to the contributions of...

Learning Lessons: PRI Education

Submitted by ajh on Fri, 10/31/2025 - 14:18
TOPS HQ

"Never stop learning" is a mantra of countless successful people, and the PRI Show provides plentiful opportunities to gain valuable new skills and information that can readily be applied to motorsports operations. New technical details, marketing tips, business management skills, and much more will be shared during the event's vast educational program.

From December 11–13, at the Indiana Convention Center and Lucas Oil Stadium, motorsports industry members can learn from approximately 50 educational seminars, breakout sessions, and panel discussions.

Following is a list of the PRI Education program, the T.O.P.S. offerings for race track operators and sanctioning organizations, and exhibitor-sponsored seminars. Keep track of the seminars or events you would like to attend by adding any of these to your PRI Show schedule, which can be set up in the My Show Planner at pri2025.mapyourshow.com. Or download the PRI App in the Google Play Store or Apple Store by typing "PRI Show" in the search bar for the PRI Trade Show 2025 app.

PRI Education

Four seminars will make up the PRI Education offerings this year. They all take place on Friday, December 12, in one location—meeting rooms 231–233—which are upstairs in the Indiana Convention Center (ICC).

Kicking off the program will be the return of Dan Begle of King Engine Bearings, Randy Neal of CWT Industries, and Lake Speed Jr. of SPEEDiagnostix, who will present "Key Performance with Bearings, Oil, and Balancing." They will analyze and discuss the current performance technology behind the interaction of engine bearings, oil film, and crankshaft harmonics. Their program will take place from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.

Next up at 11:00 a.m. is another PRI audience favorite with Alex Striler presenting his always popular "Sponsorship 101." Striler explained that the first half of Sponsorship 101 will cover several topics, including the different types of sponsorship, such as discounts, in-kind, product, and cash; how to find and approach sponsors; who to talk to at the company, and how to prepare for the conversation; the difference between decks and proposals, and why most decks are worthless; what to include in a sponsorship proposal, and how detailed it should be; and more.

During the second half of Sponsorship 101, Striler will moderate a panel of marketing managers and sponsorship directors who will explain why they sponsor, what their brands look for in athletes, and how racers can create value for them through their racing. Attendees will hear directly from sponsorship decision-makers about how to get sponsored by them and will be given an opportunity to ask questions at the end.

"You don't need sponsors if you just want to race," said Striler. "But, if you want to race competitively and make a career out of it, then you need funding above and beyond winnings, prizes, and payouts. You need sponsors. Sponsorship 101 will bring you up to date on identifying companies to partner with and understanding how to create value for them, so they want to sponsor your program. The best partners are those who want to join your team. Sponsorship 101 will explain how to find, secure, and keep them long term."

Addressing how AI (artificial intelligence) has changed the business playbook by lowering costs that create better ROI (return on investment), Chuck Tate and Kevin Barber of Digital Momentum will present "Drive Momentum with AI" from 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. This session will show attendees how to utilize AI for their brand and spend less to make more. It will walk them through the process and give them a tool to make implementation easier.

Another hot topic in racing today is the use of influencers. Who to use, and are they actually effective? We will answer those questions and more in "How Influencers Can Influence YOUR Customer Base" beginning at 3:00 p.m.

In addition to the PRI Education program, consider making time throughout the PRI Show to take in additional classes from exhibitors or in the T.O.P.S. HQ, which is now located upstairs in the ICC, near the Sagamore Ballroom.
