FAT Karting League to Host World Finals at Willow Springs in December

Submitted by ajh on Tue, 11/18/2025 - 14:23

Today, FAT International announced that its grassroots youth racing initiative, FAT Karting League (FKL), will host the 2025 World Finals at Willow Springs International Raceway in California on December 14, the league's first-ever final in the United States.

The event brings together top young drivers from the United Kingdom and United States to race for a fully funded Formula 4 season.

Co-founded by Formula 1 engineer Rob Smedley and Ferdi Porsche, CEO of FAT International, FKL is specifically designed to eliminate high costs of entry, promote talent and provide inclusive pathways for the most promising youth drivers aged 5 to 17 to participate in professional motorsport.

"FKL is for kids who are unable to break into the sport due to the incredible costs associated with it," said Smedley. "I truly believe there are future pros out there who just need the opportunity to compete and show their skills, and that is what FKL is about."

The league offers standardized electric race karts, an arrive-and-drive format and a merit-based competition structure for its participants. Drivers compete in Regional and Pro Championships across the United Kingdom and United States, progressing through three age classes: Bambino (5–8), Cadet (8–13) and Junior (12–17).

More than 100 of the best youth drivers from the United Kingdom, the Midwest and California will race to win major rewards, including a fully funded seat in the FIA British Formula 4 Championship for Junior drivers.

FKL seasons cost $3,000 to $7,000, a fraction of the $125,000-plus typically required for karting. All competitors race in identical 48V electric karts designed by former Formula 1 engineers to ensure equal performance, safety and fairness.

"The goal of FAT Karting League is to change the high barrier to entry in motorsports and serves to democratize the opportunity for a wider range of people," said Porsche. "We are giving underrepresented kids the chance to find success in a normally restrictive sport."

With FKL expanding into 5 new global markets in 2026, future Finals will feature an even broader and more diverse field of drivers competing for the top prize.

Chevy Camaro ZL1 NASCAR

Chevrolet will hit the track for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season sporting an updated design of its Camaro ZL1 race car, with its competition debut set to come in February at the NASCAR Cup Series Cook Out Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium.

The latest edition Camaro ZL1 racecar will feature upgraded styling that is aligned with Chevrolet's recently released Camaro ZL1 Carbon Performance Package accessories kit for owners to optimize the performance capabilities of the sixth-generation Camaro ZL1 production car. Chevrolet collaborated with NASCAR and its teams on this update.

The most prominent changes are a larger hood power dome, a revised front grille and more pronounced rocker panels along the sides of the car. These mirror the new Carbon Performance Package's carbon-fiber hood insert and rockers, plus ZL1 1LE-spec front grille and splitter.

Dating back to 1955, Chevrolet has competed with 14 different nameplates in the NASCAR Cup Series, recording 881 all-time victories, 34 Driver Championships, and 44 Manufacturer Championships, including the past five manufacturer titles.

AE Victory Racing (AEVR), the women-led motorsport program, is now accepting applications for its 2026 Female Driver Shootout to determine who will participate in its 2026 Driver Development Program.

AEVR also confirmed the acquisition of a second Toyota Supra GT4 EVO2, expanding to a two-car effort in the 2026 World Racing League (WRL) Championship. With the addition of the second GT4 machine, this year's shootout could result in two to three fully funded development seats for the upcoming season.

"Expanding to two GT4 cars is a milestone for our program," said AEVR Owner and Driver Erin Vogel, "It allows us to create more opportunities for female drivers, more learning environments, and more meaningful paths into professional motorsport. I'm thrilled we can continue to expand this team and build on the passion of our efforts."

AEVR's Driver Development Program blends a supportive, intentional team environment rooted in communication, trust, growth, and real-world race experience, Vogel said. The team's philosophy centers on high-performance growth, on and off track. Drivers in the program gain a fully funded seat in a competitive endurance racing series, professional driving instruction from pro-drivers like Vogel, Sarah Montgomery, Ashley Freiberg and others, as well as a comprehensive professional development program and that focuses on mental preparedness, communication and team building from leaders like Claudia Fulga of Forty Forty Living and Mike Metcalf of D.E.C.K. Leadership.

The deadline to submit an application for the shootout is Sunday, December 7. Finalists will be announced in early January before the in-person shootout, scheduled for January 29-30 at Inde Motorsports Ranch in Wilcox, Arizona.

Drivers must be at least 16 years of age and have a full racing license from a legitimate sanctioning body. All levels are encouraged to apply.

Applications are now open here.

Training Ground: Hot Rodders of Tomorrow

Submitted by ajh on Mon, 11/17/2025 - 16:47
Hot Rodders of Tomorrow

The Hot Rodders of Tomorrow competition, which now includes hundreds of students from across the US, came from humble roots. In 2008, Jim Bingham, owner of Winners Circle Speed & Custom in Joliet, Illinois, put on the inaugural Race and Performance Expo in St. Charles, Illinois, a SEMA Show-like event for the greater Chicagoland area. Within the Expo was The Engine Challenge, where 35 students from five high schools competed to build four junkyard engines.

Vic Edelbrock Jr. was among the Expo's attendees that year. He recognized The Engine Challenge as a way to engage and encourage young enthusiasts in the automotive industry. Edelbrock shared that vision with Bingham, who ran with the idea and created Hot Rodders of Tomorrow (HROT). In just a year, the competition grew to 35 teams participating at three events.

Today, Bingham's son Rodney oversees the program, which has expanded to include qualifying events from coast to coast. Winner's Circle Speed & Custom is HROT's base of operation.

The Essence of Motorsports

As Edelbrock envisioned, HROT functions as one of the best programs to get students involved in the automotive industry. At the heart of the program is the essence of motorsports—competition.

HROT is a disassembly and reassembly style of competition. The engine is "all together at the beginning," Bingham explained. "They have to take everything down to the cam and the crank. All their tools and all the components have to be disassembled. Their area has to be cleaned. Then they run behind the counter. Once they're cleared by the judges, they can start building. That starts the reassembly phase."

Teams initially race the clock, but as the competition progresses, they eventually compete against other school teams. The competition has penalties. "If a student were to get under the engine, that's a safety zone infraction," Bingham said. "They'll get pulled out and assessed a time penalty. Dropping certain parts of the engine—for example, the carburetor and stuff that could break—has heavier time penalties." If a pushrod is dropped, for example, a team member must pick it up, wipe it, and re-oil it.

There are typically five students competing on a team, with an alternate student if necessary. A student behind the 8-foot by 3-foot workbench prepares components for the other four students tasked with reassembly.

To ensure the highest levels of competition, standards are applied for all students and school districts involved in the program. Each team trains and competes using a 350-cubic inch small block Chevy equipped with hydraulic rollers.

"It's a 1986 through 1993-ish block," said Bingham. "The small block Chevy works really well when we're trying to teach the basic core principles of the engine and working as a team."

Qualifying events typically begin in February and run through July. "We partner with different shows, different schools, and we have qualifiers where the teams show up. They have to run 33 minutes, with time penalties, and they're being judged to qualify to get to the finals," Bingham explained.

Finals take place at the SEMA Show or PRI Show. There can be some logistical difficulties due to the participating teams' school schedules. "Currently, teams are practicing and getting ready for next year's finals [in 2026]," Bingham said. "As soon as we finish this year's finals in December, we will jump right into our season because the school year is going on.

"We have eight qualifiers this year. They're strictly against the clock because they only have to hit that qualifying time. When they get to the PRI Show, they're head-to-head. Whoever is the fastest is going to be the national champion."

Passionate Stakeholders

Lack of school funding is an unfortunate reality for the HROT program. Bingham and others involved with HROT work constantly to expand the program so it can include as many students who want to participate as possible. Fortunately, there are stakeholders in the program who feel just as passionately about the opportunities HROT provides its student competitors.

"Many of these instructors use money out of their own pocket to make this event happen in the first place," Bingham said.

Aftermarket manufacturing companies have also embraced the Bingham family vision of student empowerment.
