PRI's First Show Advertisements Focus On Heritage Of Race Innovation In Indianapolis

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 04/30/2013 - 11:10
An archival photo of the famed Marmon Wasp is being utilized in the initial advertising created by Performance Racing Industry (PRI) to promote the return of the PRI Trade Show to Indianapolis this year.

The Marmon Wasp was driven by Ray Harroun to victory in the first Indianapolis 500 in 1911. Harroun completed the race in 6 hours, 42 minutes and 8 seconds.

“When we think of Indianapolis, we think of epic innovation in speed,” said John Kilroy, producer of the PRI Trade Show. “At the PRI Trade Show in Indianapolis, we’ll have 1100 companies bringing their latest new product lines in hardcore racing components. Speed part manufacturers are the source of much of the innovation in speed today. The connection to the heritage of automotive innovation in Indianapolis is something we wanted to make on behalf of all of our exhibiting companies.”

Full-page display advertisements are scheduled for Circle Track, Speedway Illustrated, Sprint Car & Midget, Performance Racing Industry and SEMA News.

“We’ve had a great response to what we’re calling the 'heritage ad,' and we’re using it to get racers to already start thinking about a trip to Indianapolis for the PRI Trade Show this December,” said Kilroy. “The return to Indianapolis has been enthusiastically embraced by the racing industry. The array of exhibiting companies is going to be amazing.”

Kilroy explained that he worked with Jarrod Krisiloff, senior director of Marketing at Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS) to use the photo from the IMS Photo Archive.

“It was great fun pouring over the photo history of the Indy 500 in the Archive. There are extraordinary photos there,” said Kilroy.

The Archive is located on the second floor of the IMS Hall of Fame Museum on the grounds of the world famous race track. In fact, any visitor can review the photos and select one to be printed as an 8 x 10-inch printed photo for a fee.

“The IMS Hall of Fame Museum should be on everybody’s list of things to do in Indianapolis the week of the PRI Trade Show,” added Kilroy.

The six-cylinder Marmon Wasp was named for its yellow and black color scheme, and its long pointed tail to reduce drag. One of Harroun’s innovations was a rear view mirror, as he was the first driver to race without a riding mechanic to watch for cars from behind.

IMSC Receives Legislative Approval Of Motorsports Initiative

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 04/29/2013 - 12:57
The Indiana General Assembly has approved a bill that will strengthen the state's position as a global leader in the motorsports industry and create benefits for economic development in tourism, hospitality and motorsports, including upgrades and improvements at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

House Bill 1544 passed the House and Senate late last week and is now on its way to the desk of Gov. Mike Pence.

The legislation creates an Indiana Motorsports Investment District that will capture growth in sales and income taxes at the commercial property that includes IMS for future investment in the Speedway.

In addition, the Indiana Economic Development Corp. (IEDC) will oversee a fund for motorsports businesses statewide to apply for loans to assist with economic development projects and facility improvements.

"We appreciate the hard work done by state lawmakers to ensure Indiana remains the worldwide leader in motorsports," said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corp. president and CEO. "This legislation will allow us to make transformative improvements to our 104-year-old facility over the next several years that will greatly enhance the fan experience."

Per the legislation, IMS will receive a loan from the state for up to $5 million per year for 20 years, to complete capital improvement projects. The loan will be repaid through the anticipated increases in income and sales tax collections at IMS and will be guaranteed by IMS' parent company, Hulman & Co.

In addition, IMS will contribute $2 million per year, $40 million total, over 20 years toward the improvements.

The legislation also creates an Indiana motorsports fund where the state will provide up to an additional $5 million per year to the IEDC for loans to motorsports businesses and tracks interested in making improvements to their facilities.

"The impact of motorsports in Indiana is felt in all 92 counties, and this industry provides 23,000 direct jobs statewide that pay an average wage of nearly $63,000 per year," said Tom Weisenbach, Indiana Motorsports Association executive director. "Our state lawmakers understand the significant economic impact of our industry, and we greatly appreciate their support as we look to grow our state's economy."

Projects that could be implemented by IMS as a result of this legislation will be determined in part through a master facility use plan process that is underway at IMS.

The FIA Formula E Championship was officially welcomed to Los Angeles recently, becoming one of 10 global cities to host the world's first fully electric Formula E race, commencing in 2014.

Formula E is a new FIA championship that brings electric vehicle racing to the people, as city centres around the world play host to an electric energy World Championship designed to promote interest and investment in electric vehicles and sustainable motoring.

Los Angeles was selected to host one of the races by Championship promoters Formula E Holdings in part due to its robust and burgeoning electric vehicle infrastructure, in particular Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) Electric Vehicle Program.

Additional cities already chosen to host races include Miami; London and Rome in Europe; Beijing and Putrajaya in Asia; and Buenos Aires and Rio de Janiero in South America, with two locations to be announced.

Meridian Speedway Honors Late Hornets Champion

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 04/26/2013 - 11:47
The “family” at ASA-sanctioned Meridian (ID) Speedway, including racers, crew members and others, have come together to make sure that Saturday’s (April 27) Hornet Enduro 200 is the best it can be.

Up to 84 Hornet racers will take the track to race in honor of Art “The Animal” Heath. The Nampa, ID, driver, a former Tates Hornets season champion at the quarter-mile oval, died Dec. 21 at the age of 42 in a single-car accident on Idaho highway 55.

“It’s pretty phenomenal,” Art’s wife, Stacy, said of the decision to run a tribute race. “It means a lot to all of us.”

His father, Art Sr., from Pocatello, will drive a white Ford Escort emblazoned with the trademark green flames and No. 84 that Art Jr. piloted on the way to earning another nickname, “Master of Disaster,” at the Meridian track.

“We haven’t had an enduro in a few years,” speedway managing partner Adam Nelson said. “We're looking forward to using the format again. It's crazy. No cautions, no holds barred. Couldn't be a better format when we're talking about the memory of the Master of Disaster, Art 'The Animal' Heath.”

Two of Heath’s former Hornet rivals—Thomas Harrod of Caldwell, ID, and Chuck Youngblood of Meridian—will have the vintage paint job ready for Saturday.

“I just would like to say thanks to everybody for everything. They’ve done so much,” Art Jr.’s wife, Stacy, said. “Tommy Harrod, Chuck Youngblood, Tony Flores and Lynn Sharp. (Western Idaho Racing Association) has helped me a lot.

“Monica is the only thing that has probably gotten me through.”

“Monica” is Art’s cousin, Monica Heath, whose registered hometown for Saturday’s entry list is Blackfoot.

Both Stacy and Monica returned to the racetrack on April 20 when the Hornets season opened.

“There were a lot of sad feelings: Missing him, wishing he was there,” Stacy said. “I don’t know if I’m honestly going to make it through the year. It’s too hard to catch yourself looking across the track, looking for him and him not being there.

“He was my painter, my husband, my mechanic, my everything.”

Stacy ran as high as second place in the opener last week, but made a strategic decision, leaving the track to preserve her car for Art’s memorial race.

“There was too much water on (the track),” she said. “I had the wrong size tires on (the car) and couldn’t hold the track.

“I didn’t want to take anybody out and miss this race.”

The fact that Stacy even made the opener a little more than four months after her husband’s passing was testament to the tight-knit racing community. Her engine blew up late last season.

“I’ve had a lot of help,” she said. “Meridian Speedway has been really great. If it wasn’t for them, I don’t know if I would have been there last week.”

The gates open at 4 p.m. with qualifying after 5 p.m. and racing at 6:30 p.m.

For tickets and additional information, visit the track’s website, www.meridianspeedway.com.

Spencer Gallagher, Allegiant Mark World Wish Day With Special Paint Scheme

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 04/26/2013 - 11:31
A month-long celebration culminates April 29 as Make-A-Wish commemorates the first-ever wish granted 33 years ago on that date, now known as World Wish Day.

To commemorate the milestone, officials with Gallagher Motorsports and Allegiant have announced that Spencer Gallagher will pilot a special No. 23 Make-A-Wish/Allegiant paint scheme and the nonprofit's logo in Sunday's (April 28) Kentuckiana Ford Dealers ARCA 200 presented by Crosley Radio at Salem Speedway.

Allegiant officials previously announced last August that they would be supporting Make-A-Wish as their primary charity. With Make-A-Wish granting a wish, on average, every 38 minutes in the US and approximately three out of four wishes involving travel, Allegiant has committed its resources to helping make travel wishes come true.

Since Allegiant began its involvement with Make-A-Wish, the company has provided support for 40 wish kids and their families to receive donated flights to their wish destinations, including the beaches of Hawaii and the Florida theme parks. In less than one year, Allegiant has provided nearly $150,000 in travel savings and event sponsorships in its local communities.

Gallagher Motorsports worked closely with Allegiant in early April to create a fitting tribute to World Wish Day by adorning its Chevrolet race car with the Make-A-Wish logo. Race fans in attendance will be able to spot the logos on the hood and deck-lid of the No. 23 Chevrolet as Gallagher competes in the 200-lap event.
