Iowa Speedway Announces 2016 Schedule

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 11/09/2015 - 06:31
Iowa Speedway has announced its 2016 platform, featuring eight high-powered races over three weekends next summer.

Wide Opening Weekend will feature the first ever pairing of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and the NASCAR XFINITY Series at Iowa Speedway. Fans now can make plans to celebrate Father’s Day Weekend and these two NASCAR national series as they take center stage June 18-19 in Central Iowa. The move to a June start will better serve fans who are busy with the planting season and graduations in the month of May.

“Pairing the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series with the NASCAR XFINITY Series on Father’s Day Weekend and an off-week for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is quite a coup for us,” said Iowa Speedway President Jimmy Small. “We will have top billing that weekend and we can’t wait to showcase central Iowa and ‘The Fastest Short Track on the Planet’ to motorsports fans here in Newton and across the country.”

The ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards will make its way back to Iowa Speedway for another mid-summer, short track classic Saturday night, July 9. The 150-lap ARCA race will serve as the preamble to the next day’s IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300, bringing together a high-profile stock car tour with the top open wheel circuit in America. In the 2015 ARCA race, Iowa native Mason Mitchell thrilled the crowd when he took the checkered flag, proclaiming in Casey’s General Stores Victory Lane that the win was “his Daytona.”

The Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 will be contested Sunday, July 10. The last time that INDYCAR raced on a Sunday, at Iowa Speedway, was in 2013 when James Hinchcliffe won his first career IndyCar Series race in front of Iowa’s passionate fan base.

The 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300 will mark the 10th anniversary of the event. In 2007, Iowa Speedway gained widespread attention when INDYCAR became the first major series to race at the newly opened track. Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires and the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires also will be in action July 10.

“Having two Saturday-Sunday shows to open our season is great for fans who want to maximize their tailgate time and take in all the action of practice and qualifying,” Small said. “We believe that the changes to our schedule increase the quality of the experience that fans will have when they come to the track, which is important as the summer months are jam packed with great things to do in Iowa.”

The Iowa Speedway racing season concludes July 29-30 with another top-notch NASCAR doubleheader featuring the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West Casey’s General Stores 150 combination race and the ever-popular NASCAR XFINITY Series U.S. Cellular 250.

Season ticket sales begin Wednesday, Dec. 2. Current Season Ticket Holders will receive a renewal letter in the mail and as in years past and will have an opportunity to renew their existing tickets until Feb. 24, 2016. Season Ticket Holders who have moved during the past 12 months should contact the Iowa Speedway ticket office with their change of address or update their Ticketmaster account to ensure that they receive the renewal mailing. Payment plans are available and offer great flexibility to fans who want to pay in installments.

The 2016 schedule of events at Iowa Speedway is as follows:

June 18 – NASCAR Camping World Truck Series

June 19 – NASCAR XFINITY Series

July 9 – ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards

July 10 – Pro Mazda presented by Cooper Tires

July 10 – Indy Lights presented by Cooper Tires

July 10 – Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa Corn 300

July 29 – NASCAR K&N Pro Series East / West Casey’s General Stores 150

July 30 – NASCAR XFINITY Series U.S. Cellular 250

Road To Indy Shootout Adds Three Series

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 11/09/2015 - 05:51
Three additional series have been confirmed for the Mazda Road to Indy USF2000 $200K Scholarship Shootout, which will bring together champions from around the world to vie for a $200,000 Mazda scholarship to join the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda in 2017.

India’s MRF 1600 Championship, Mexico’s Formula Panam and Canada’s Formula Tour 1600 are the latest and final additions to the inaugural event. Each participating series will be able to offer its 2016 champion an “entry ticket” to the Shootout, which will take place in the fall of next year, and will be designated as an Official Feeder Series of the Mazda Road to Indy.

“The Madras Motor Race Track has nurtured the making of many national champions as well as international drivers Karun Chandhok and Narain Karthikeyan,” said Vicky Chandhok, Madras Motor Sports Club Chairman of National Racing Championships. “While we have the rungs of the ladder in place for national level progression, this is the first time for us to tie up with a formally structured program which will certainly attract more participation from India into the sport. We’re very excited about 2016 and look forward to seeing who will be the first champion from India at the Shootout.”

The Shootout will comprise 17 champions representing eight countries.

“We are very exited to become a Mazda Road to Indy feeder series and give our champion the opportunity to represent Formula Panam in the Shootout and have a chance to progress their career into USF2000,” said Hector Richards, Series Director. “There has been a lack of Mexican drivers in IndyCar for the past 10 years, and this partnership gives drivers the opportunity to follow in the footsteps of Adrian Fernandez, Michel Jourdain and Mario Dominguez to reach the Mazda Road to Indy and eventually the Verizon IndyCar Series.”

Full competition details on the “knockout style” Shootout and program structure will be distributed in the coming months.

“We have a great lineup in place for our inaugural Shootout and I have to thank all the participating series for their support of this program,” said Dan Andersen, Owner and CEO of Andersen Promotions. “We are excited to have them as partners. We look forward to bringing champions from around the world together on the grid next fall in what will be a highly anticipated event, and to helping the next rising star on their career path in the Mazda Road to Indy.”

“To see the addition of more series from more continents is validation for what the Mazda Road to Indy and Andersen Promotions are striving to achieve as the top open-wheel ladder system around the globe,” said John Doonan, Director of Mazda Motorsports in North America. “We look forward to having their champions join us next year for the Mazda Road to Indy Shootout.”

Pirelli WC Announces 2016 Schedule, New Rules

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 10:06

WC Vision announced a variety of new elements to its 2016 series, including the confirmed schedule, the alliance with SRO and live television showings.

At the annual “State of the Series” presentation at the SEMA Show, Pirelli World Challenge officials expounded on the previously released 2016 schedule with dates at the Utah Motorsports Campus in Tooele, Utah on August 26–28 and the season finale at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Monterey, Calif., on October 7–9.

The 2016 Pirelli World Challenge Championships will be contested during 11 weekends beginning at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Tex. on March 3-6 followed by street events at St. Petersburg, Fla., (March 11-13) and Long Beach, Calif. (April 15-17), Barber Motorsports Park (April 22-24); Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (May 19-22); Lime Rock Park (May 27-28); Road America (June 24-26); Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (July 29-31); Utah Motorsport Campus (August 26-28); Sonoma Raceway (Sept. 16-18) and Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca (Oct. 7-9).

“We believe the 2015 Pirelli World Challenge season was the greatest championship season in the series’ 26 years and the 2016 season will be bigger and better,” said Greg Gill, Pirelli World Challenge President and CEO. “Our confirmed schedule has some of our traditional dates as well as the addition of Lime Rock Park on its historic Memorial Weekend. Working with the Verizon IndyCar Series has been a tremendous relationship and we look forward to sharing six weekend events in 2016 along with our five PWC headliner weekends. The 2016 Pirelli World Challenge is shaping up to be another thrilling and competitive season. Competition Director Marcus Haselgrove and his team have been working tirelessly to streamline rules, and forms while enhancing the at-track experience for our competitors.”

Haselgrove announced the following competition and technical changes for the 2016 season: GT/GTA and GT Cup races will begin with rolling starts, and the plan to integrate more GT4 homologated platforms like the Maserati GranTurismo and the KTM X-BOW in the GTS class.

“We have streamlined the 2016 Rule Book, worked closely with teams and manufacturers since the checkered flag at Mazda Raceway in Mid-September and we will be adding to our competition and technical team in the coming weeks,” noted Haselgrove.

Last March, Pirelli World Challenge officials announced the alliance with the SRO Motorsports Group and the highly-competitive Blancpain GT Series featuring GT3-based sports cars and the series’ double header event set for the 2016 PWC season opener at Circuit of the Americas.

The alliance is confirmed with the announcement of the first GT3-only endurance race in North America with a six-hour race at the Circuit of the Americas scheduled for March 5, 2016. Independent from the Blancpain GT Series in Europe, the race will be part of the planned Intercontinental Challenge, which will bring together the Liqui Moly 12 Hours of Bathurst in Australia, the Total 24 Hours of Spa in Europe and the 12 Hours of Sepang in Asia; all races where a GT3 class will be the overall winning class. The US round will also be open to GTS/GT4 cars.

The alliance will also see the two sports car racing series utilizing similar technical regulations including the SRO Balance of Performance equations and other selected particulars such as consultancy on Sport and Development.

“Working with Stephane Ratel and his SRO Motorsports Group has been outstanding,” said Gill. “Since joining PWC Marcus Haselgrove has worked closely with SRO’s technical department in an open forum with the GT3 regulations and we believe the collection of GT3 cars at the season opener at COTA could be one of the largest in sports car racing history. Fans will now see a global mixture of PWC and SRO GT teams and drivers racing together. It’s a great way to kick off the 2016 season.”

“Extending the SRO-monitored Balance of Performance to the Pirelli World Challenge, in addition to the many series and events which already adopted it around the globe will give manufacturers and teams the assurance of a professional and fair competition which is not based on the relative performance of teams and drivers in a particular series but solely on the cars’ performance, measured across 40 circuits on four continents,” said Ratel, President and CEO of the SRO Motorsports Group. “The fact that most of the monitored Series and events run on the same Pirelli tire specification will add to the accuracy. Working with Greg Gill and his team on this and on other aspects of the Series is a great honor for SRO. We are looking forward to a 2016 season which should mark the beginning of an even closer collaboration.”

In the address at the SEMA Show today, Pirelli World Challenge officials also confirmed the television package with CBS Sports Network that will include a live race broadcast for the 2016 season, as well as the expanded relationship with Motor Trend OnDemand TV.

As in 2015, CBS Sports Network will telecast the remainder of the 2016 Pirelli World Challenge events on a taped-delay basis with 120-, 90- and 60-minute presentations. Details on the CBS Sports Network viewing schedule will be announcement in the near future.

“Our relationship with CBS Sports Network last year was an excellent start and we are very pleased about the television schedule for 2016,” said Gill. “They captured some of the best wheel-to-wheel sports car action in the world last season with tremendous in-car footage and superb camera angles. We look forward to more of the same in 2016.”

In addition to the PWC announcements, the WC Vision Board of Directors removed the interim tag and named Greg Gill as President and CEO of Pirelli World Challenge. Additional series appointments will be announced in the near future.

Selinsgrove Speedway Rescued

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/06/2015 - 09:55
Selinsgrove Speedway's future has been in limbo since the first laps were turned at the facility to kick off the 2015 season.

Ever since promoter Charlie Paige decided he wasn't going to renew his lease with the fair board, there has been plenty of speculation.

Fair board president Dawayne Betzer was at ground zero for the entire process. But now, a group headed by Sprint Car owner Mike Heffner and promoter Alan Kreitzer has picked up the lease and guaranteed there is going to be racing at the Snyder County oval in 2016.

"The world has been lifted off my shoulders," Betzer said. "This process has been going on for quite awhile. We just couldn't say anything.

"There is a lot of work ahead, but this is huge. A lot of stress has been lifted off me, and we are excited."

Continued Betzer, "You couldn't ask for two better people [to take this over]. We went through a roller coaster with a lot of concrete walls. We went through them and made it work in the end. We kept plugging away, and it was well worth it."

Heffner, who owns race teams including a 410 Sprint Car driven by Greg Hodnett, is the majority shareholder in what will be a corporation with Kreitzer and other investors. The group named Steve Inch, who has been at the speedway a total of 24 years, as the new promoter.

According to Kreitzer, who also co-promotes Lincoln Speedway, there are no plans to change the regular Saturday night program, which is headlined by the 360 Sprint Car and Late Model divisions.

"There are good people involved with this," Kreitzer said. "I think it can be fun as well as quite an undertaking. We want to try and assist in elevating Selinsgrove Speedway.

"It's going to be fun working with all these guys, and we are going to see what we can do as a team."

It wasn't easy getting to this point. There were months of negotiating before Betzer and the board could start entertaining another promotional team.

The hang up was a rift between Paige and the fair board over assets. Rumors swirled and left some drivers and fans to believe Selinsgrove Speedway was in jeopardy of closing.

Finally, the two parties reached an agreement. That opened the door for Heffner and Kreitzer to close the deal and save a piece of central Pennsylvania racing history.

"First and foremost, it was the history and my love of dirt track racing," Heffner said. "Second, it was something I felt had future financial potential.

"Losing all that history, it would be like any organization that goes out of business. Something closes, and the history dies with it.

"This is a labor of love. I would rather race than eat steak. I would rather eat of a can than give up racing."

Valuable Tips To Tackling Sponsorship Deals

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 11:09
Race sponsorship comes in many forms, from Fortune 500 company-backed branding campaigns in professional series to handshake agreements between family owned speed shops and local drivers. Regardless of scale, both sides of the sponsorship equation are encouraged to read PRI Magazine’s feature article on Motorsports Sponsorship, which appears in our November 2015 issue, and consider the following advice from our expert sources, as compiled by contributing writer Louise Ann Noeth:

Derek Daly  |  Derek Daly Academy
Be sure to understand the athlete and his support system. No athlete in any sport can carry all the requisite skills to mange a high level commercial commitment. It takes a village, so make sure the athlete is well supported so he/she can focus on winning. That’s their job.

Don’t be discouraged by the volume of work and time that goes into crafting a deal. They take years to cultivate and close. Everyone underestimates how long it really takes. The idea can gel within a few months, but signing the deal usually morphs into years.

Frank Buscemi  |  TI Automotive
Understand that there are other operational costs associated with racing, especially travel and logistics. Many of the races in which we participate take place in out-of-the-way locations with smaller and fewer hotels. Book early, and know that the closer you are to the track, the more it will cost; and watch the “minimum guarantees” required.

Once on site, the reach and support of the audience can be startling. Racing fans are generally car buffs who really enjoy the speed, the performance, and the atmosphere of the track. It truly is a “scene,” and brings out the passion of people’s interest in the automotive industry.

Tim Cindric  |  Penske Racing
As a sponsor, you must realize that success on the track has many variables, some of which are not controllable. Patience is essential. Racing has many ups and downs. You require fortitude to endure — especially in a series — for teams and sponsors.

Look for both parties to have a long-lasting relationship. Don’t sign on with the first team, or first name, you come across. Understand the landscape to discover which team or driver is best suited for the brand.

Know that a prospective sponsor opportunity may not start with your team. How you are viewed (project success) will get noticed. Everyone wants to align themselves with success.

Existing relationships also impact other sponsors coming into the sport; it’s like anything in life—reputations are built and ruined on perception.

Cameron Evans  |  Red Line Synthetic Oil
We remind teams that a major brand’s promotion can impact their race team often more than that team’s racing activity can help the brand. It’s powerful when a brand promotes the team, and that team’s other sponsors benefit. When everyone works together with links for social media and the like, racing can have a great benefit.

What’s most surprising is that a lot of teams still don’t have an idea of how expensive it is to help their team—if they add up what the team should bring in return, their requests might be more realistic.

Tom Bogner  |  Lucas Oil Products
Let the company or racer prove to you he can move the needle with sales before you sign the contract. Nothing surprises me these days, as racers are trying hard to make it from track to track, and many have jobs during the week. Make sure you choose a team that can afford to race and race for a championship.

Annamarie Malfitana-Strawhand  |  Marketing At Full Speed
If you are seeking sponsorship, shift your mindset into that of the sponsor. Women pick this up faster—they know how to nurture a relationship and they get sponsors faster. Women are better at it.

Sponsorship is an ATTRACTION process. First get clear on exactly what you want to attract to your company. Then, find the person that can provide you exactly with that solution. If they give you what you want to attract to your company, and they come with the "social proof" that they are the real deal to do it—then sign on the dotted line. Build upon it and enjoy the rewards that this relationship can give you, your company and your future.

Teams that are not willing to follow-through after contract signing—the ones that over-promise and under-deliver—don’t understand that this reverberates back into the community and sours a sponsor on getting further invested in motorsports

Ben Schlosser  |  Richard Childress Racing
Have a plan and have some ownership of it—you can’t just write a check and expect it to produce a positive result. We want our sponsors to be involved in our business. Be a problem solver. Don’t bring me problem; come to me with a proposed solution and we will work on it from there.

Mike Rose  |  Virginia International Raceway
Approach a sponsorship with a set of tangible objectives, an open mind, and an understanding of the partner you're about to join. Discuss and review the language of a sponsorship, as two people can read a sentence two different ways, and that can lead to trouble. Be thorough and clear in your message whenever possible.

VP Selected As Supplier For 2016 Cobra Jet

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 11/05/2015 - 05:39
VP Racing Fuels announced its selection as the Official Fuel Supplier for Ford Motor Company’s 2016 Cobra Jet, which was introduced at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas. Ford’s unveiling marks the continued evolution of the Cobra Jet as a limited edition, factory-produced turnkey race car.

Like its predecessors, the 2016 Cobra Jet is legal for NHRA-Stock and Super Stock drag racing as well as several classes in IHRA, NMRA, and NMCA.  With VP as the Official Fuel Supplier, each 2016 production unit will come from the factory calibrated specifically for VP’s C16 racing fuel.

“VP Racing Fuels has consistently been the choice of our customers so it was an easy decision to meet customer demand by sourcing them on the program,” said Jesse Kershaw, Drag Racing Parts and Competition Manager for Ford Performance. “Having a known consistent fuel stoichiometry is critical to our development and calibration process for the Cobra Jet and VP’s fuels deliver both the performance and consistency needed.”

“We’re extremely proud to have C16 chosen to power the 2016 Cobra Jet,” said Chris Wall, Chief Marketing Officer for VP Racing Fuels. “Just as Ford’s Cobra Jet Mustang has a longstanding legacy of power and performance, C16’s superior power and performance have made it the fuel of choice for thousands of drag racers at all levels since its introduction. In fact, VP’s blends work well in all high performance Ford vehicles, from VP101 street-legal unleaded for the supercharged Cobra Mustang and other street-legal models to a variety of off-road blends for racing applications. We look forward to working with Ford Performance and encourage its customers to contact VP’s full-time, professional Tech Support staff with any fuel related questions.”
