Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/27/2015 - 04:24
Xtrac, who was named 2014 UK Manufacturer of the Year, continues to invest in its future by appointing Adrian Moore as managing director and completing a significant £3 million (€4 million) purchase of new machinery.

Previously technical director with more than 20 years of experience in the industry, Moore succeeds Peter Digby, who steps into his new role as Xtrac Executive Chairman. Digby will work closely with Moore, while concentrating on sales and looking after international motorsport series and key customers including Formula One, IndyCar and Xtrac’s extensive touring and sports car markets. Xtrac exports over 77 percent of annual turnover, which includes gearboxes, differentials, engine gears and other vehicle transmission and driveline products.

Moore will manage the day-to-day running of this advanced engineering business, known for its drivetrain design and manufacturing capabilities, directing a substantial part of sales revenue into research and development and capital investment.

Key technical staff, comprising Chief Designer Jon Marsh, Engineering Manager Stuart Croot and Head of Advanced Engineering Dominic Smith, will continue to report to Moore directly.

“We’ve planned Adrian’s succession as Managing Director for some time,” said Digby, who is listed among the Top 100 Most Influential People in UK Manufacturing. “This natural progression in the ongoing development of Xtrac follows the recent strengthening of the senior management team and emphasizes further our extremely successful 100% employee ownership structure.”

Moore, who is a fellow of the institution of mechanical Engineers, represents the motorsport industry on the government-supported Automotive Council Technology Group which aims to engage in the delivery of new low carbon technologies and development of the UK supply base, was pleased to accept the role: “We will continue our policy of employee ownership, our highly successful apprentice and undergraduate programs, extensive ongoing capital investment programs and investment in new technologies.

“Our principle objective continues to be to supply our motorsport and automotive customers with industry-leading products they can depend on.” Adding: “I am looking forward to an exciting challenge ahead and I would like to thank Peter, and of course the whole team at Xtrac, for their trust and continued support.”

On an operational level, the new machines will offer increased capacity and bolster supply chain security through the addition of two five-axis mills and a second Klingelnberg bevel-grinding machine, plus further developments to cellular gear manufacturing capability.

Tim Vehlewald Retires From ACL Distribution

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/27/2015 - 04:13
Tim Vehlewald, one of the automotive aftermarket's long-time industry mainstays, announced his retirement as President and CEO of ACL Distribution, Inc., effective December 31, 2015, according to ACL's Executive Vice President, Juan Bez.

“I feel it's time for another chapter in my career. With nearly 40 years of a career that covered travel to over 20 countries on five continents, I have been developing skills as much as I have been accumulating airline miles. Over the years I have been approached to utilize some of these skills in areas that were of greater interest to me,” Vehlewald said. “My commitment to ACL has kept me centered on what needed to be done for the continued growth and success of the company. I am very pleased with the results of our efforts at ACL, and am confident the company is now positioned well for future success. I believe the time is right for me to make a change. Certainly there were many positive and memorable experiences throughout my career. I am grateful for the experience and the people I have shared these with over the years. Simply put, it's time to focus on different things.”

Vehlewald has been involved in and contributed to many industry organizations, including ASC, AASA, OAC, PERA, AERA, OAC, AWDA and so on.

Vehlewald began his career in 1976 at Borg Warner in Franklin Park, Illinois. He had been hired by Borg Warner as an inside salesman to “learn the ropes” of  the automotive aftermarket. He stated, “It was a culture shock to say the least and fraught with intimidation. Here I was, a twenty-year-old from rural Missouri stepping into a job that over time suddenly became a career.”

Vehlewald advanced through the ranks during his 14-year tenure at Borg Warner and attained the position of Vice President of sales with responsibility for a sales volume of $120mm and management of more than 150 territory, district and regional sales people.

In 1990, he accepted the position of Director of Sales with Sealed Power Replacement Division of SPX Corporation in Muskegon, Michigan. Less than two years later, Federal Mogul Corporation purchased Sealed Power and Vehlewald moved his family for the 10th time to become Director of Programmed Distribution at Federal Mogul in the Detroit area.

Then in 1996, Vehlewald took on yet another opportunity. He became President and CEO of ACL America, Inc. with sales and distribution responsibilities for North, Central and South America. ACL America was then a division of Automotive Components Limited with headquarters in Australia. Through a series of events, Vehlewald purchased ACL Distribution Inc., located in Grand Rapids, MI in 2010. Two years later he sold the operation to an Asian automotive parts manufacturer and has continued on as President and CEO until the present time.

Vehlewald looks forward to the next chapter with the same optimism he took over the last 40 years of his career—grateful for what he has already achieved and anxious to see what is still ahead.

Michael Weney has been named S&W Performance Group President. Weney was promoted on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, by his father and company founder, Walt Weney. Previously, Michael held the position of Executive Vice President of the group’s S&W Race Cars division (2005–2015).

He began working for the family business in 1975. He spent most of his younger years at the drag races, working with his father’s race team with his brothers Gary, Scott and sister Terri. As other teams recognized Michael’s skills, he was invited to work with such greats as Jade Grenade TF, Swenson & Lani’s FC, Jungle Jim/Jake Crimmins FC, Frantic Ford FC, Neil Mahr and many of Scott’s cars throughout the years.

“My most memorable ‘racing experience’ was attending the 1st Annual NHRA Puerto Rico Nationals, in Salinas – 1975,” said Weney. “My family and I were honored to be representing the USA, and it’s something that I will never forget.”

In the late 80’s, Weney ventured outside of the family business. He accepted an offer to become the General Manager of a large screen printing equipment factory, in Philadelphia. Michael also saw the value of education, as he attended The Philadelphia School of Business in the evenings. After gaining ‘outside world’ experience, he returned to S&W in the early 90’s. Since, he has held many positions within the company including draftsman to shop foreman and everything in between. He has played an integral role in S&W’s expansion and in their numerous accomplishments such as: Car Craft Chassis Builder of the Year Awards, Best Engineered, Best Appearing, Record Setting and World Championships with all types of cars and classes.

Michael looks forward to leading the group to continue the 56 year history of growth and great accomplishments, as his father and brother did so well before him. The new President will be attending the Tribute to Scott Weney / Fun in the Sun Race at Bradenton, FL Nov. 13-16th, 2015. He will be proudly presenting the Dragster Give-A-Way race winner with a brand new 2015 S&W Dragster Roller.

Michael stated, “This is an emotional project that would not be possible without the participation of S&W’s generous vendors.” In addition to attending the FIS race, he will also be attending the PRI Show this December.

Michael is not only a ‘family-business’ man, he is a family man as well. He has the support of his wife of 29 years, Marlene and his daughters Jillian, Amanda and Nicole. Michael and Marlene are also blessed with four grandchildren; Isabella, John, Hayden and Aubrey.

WELD has acquired the assets of HiPer Technology, Inc., manufacturer of high performance “super structural” carbon fiber wheels for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and side-by-side (UTV) vehicles, based in Lawrence, Kansas. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

“WELD is excited to add HiPer’s products to our portfolio of premium performance lines. TMS Adding More SAFER Barriers At Track

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 10/23/2015 - 05:28
The entire inside wall of the backstretch at Texas Motor Speedway and the interior walls at the entry and exit of pit road will have energy-absorbing barriers in place when NASCAR races there in two weekends.

There were already SAFER barriers on high-impact exterior walls at the 1 1/2-mile track, but speedway officials said Wednesday that the installation of an additional 2866 feet to select areas should be completed this week.

Along with the inside walls, SAFER barriers are being added to three exterior sections on the frontstretch, directly across from the entry and exit of the pits, and at the start-finish line.

Another 2103 feet of safety barrier will be installed before NASCAR returns next April, and every wall will be protected following a third phase after that.

Two-Round Qualifying Format For Talladega

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 10/23/2015 - 05:02
The “Two-Round” qualifying format that took place at Talladega Superspeedway’s May NASCAR weekend will be in effect when both the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) returns to the track this Saturday, October 24.

Qualifying for both the fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola and Foodland/Food Giant qualifying for the CampingWorld.com 500 will feature two rounds that will feature every driver taking one timed lap around the 2.66-mile tri-oval during the first round. The drivers with the 12 fastest lap speeds will advance to the second round. The top-12 starting positions for both races will be determined by the fastest lap speed in the second round, while positions 13 and beyond will be established off the first-round speeds.

NASCAR officials will send cars onto the track at predetermined intervals, resulting in a constant flow of drivers making qualifying runs. The action on the track will never stop, except for the 10-minute break between rounds. Jeff Gordon, in his final year of NASCAR Sprint Cup competition, captured his fourth Talladega pole award for the GEICO 500 in May during the two-round qualifying format. It will be the first time the NCWTS will use the format at Talladega.

Qualifying for the fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. CDT with Foodland/Food Giant qualifying for the CampingWorld.com 500 set for 3:15 p.m. CDT. Sandwiched in between will be the exciting start of the fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola race at noon CDT.

The action-packed day concludes Saturday evening at the intersection of Eastaboga and Talladega Boulevards for Talladega’s traditional infield concert, headlined by award-winning Mercury Nashville recording artist Easton Corbin.  One of NASCAR’s favorites, Tim Dugger, will kick off the night and rock the rowdy infield crowd. The best part about the concert is that admission is free with the purchase of a Sunday race ticket for the Camping World.com 500 (starting at 1:30 p.m. CDT). The race is the final event in the Contender Round in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in which the field of title contenders will be trimmed from 12 to eight at the checkered flag.

Corbin's performance will mark the second straight evening of fun activities in the infield. On Friday, after a day of practice sessions for both the fred’s 250 Powered by Coca-Cola and the Camping World.com 500, the track will host its fourth "Big One on The Blvd" infield extravaganza featuring NASCAR’s top drivers and loads of fan fun.
