* Newsmakers: Recalling some of the more noteworthy goings-on from Race Industry Week and the 2016 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show: Madison Heights, Michigan-based Motovicity Distribution announced the appointment of Brian Lounsberry as President and CEO. An 11-year company veteran, Lounsberry, who has been integral in the company’s growth over the past decade, most recently served as Motovicity’s VP of Sales & Marketing….

SEMA’s government affairs team updated attendees on the status of the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports (RPM) Act. The bill was introduced in Congress in 2016 to clarify that it is legal under federal law to modify the emissions system of a street vehicle for exclusive racing purposes. While optimistic about working with the incoming administration and the new Congress, the SEMA team nonetheless urged racing professionals—especially business owners—to continue reaching out to lawmakers when the bill is reintroduced for consideration in 2017….

Providing a shot in the arm to its Pro Mazda Championship Series Presented by Cooper Tires, IndyCar unveiled the Tatuus PM-18 prototype. The PM-18 is slated for use during the 2018 season, effectively replacing the USF-17 chassis, which was introduced in 2004, and representing the completion of an entire overhaul of all three levels of the Mazda Road to Indy program….

The World of Outlaws announced a new drug-testing program—in partnership with The National Center for Drug Free Sport—as part of a revised substance abuse policy for its sprint car and late model series. Testing will be conducted without prior notification at various events throughout the season, and drivers found to be in violation will be subject to suspension….

Aeromotive and Waterman Racing Components announced a partnership that will allow both companies to incorporate their design experience and R&D. “The two companies will not be merged, but continue to be run autonomously,” explained Aeromotive President Steve Matusek. After 49 years of running Waterman Racing Components, president Sid Waterman will now serve as an advisor and consultant for Aeromotive in the joint venture….

And Kenny Nowling announced just before noon on the Show’s closing day that the reconstituted American Drag Racing League (ADRL) would be honoring payouts from its 2013 season that very afternoon. At times defiant, Nowling assured those in attendance that W9's would be mailed out and verified upon return for those drivers who were still owed money. As of press time, the eight-race 2017 ADRL Tour begins March 10-11 with the ADRL Sunshine Drags at a track TBD in Florida, and concludes November 3-4 with ADRL Dragstock XII at Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois.

* Motor-Rollers: PRI Showgoers watched throughout the week as students from across the country competed in the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow (HROT) Engine Challenge for the quickest time to disassemble and reassemble a small block Chevy engine. As they twisted, turned and bolted, Team Comp Cams, led by instructor Chris Overfelt, bested the competition with the fastest average time of 17 minutes and 43.3 seconds. Also of note was Team Fragola, which placed third and received the fastest perfect engine run time.

Speaking of HROT, the group also recently announced the addition of the Hot Rodders of Tomorrow Junior Dragster Series. Backed by Trevor Wiggins from Comp Cams and three-time NHRA Top Fuel Champion Antron Brown, the Protect the Harvest Midwest Jr. Super Series is scheduled to hold nine events in 2017….

Meantime, Scott Harr of Dominick Racecar Fabrication only had to worry about transporting his new motor, as the fabricator from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, took home the grand prize—an 850-horsepower, high-performance Chevy LSX 454 race engine built by Nick Ferri of Patterson Elite Performance—in this year’s Sunnen Engine Charity Sweepstakes. As always, every penny raised through the raffle is donated to Victory Junction, a wonderful charity founded by NASCAR’s Petty family that allows children with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses to attend camp year-round.

UNOH, Daytona Announce Multi-year Partnership

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 12/15/2016 - 05:42
Daytona International Speedway announced a multi-year partnership with University of Northwestern Ohio (UNOH) for the school to secure the naming rights of the Fanzone, the 211,636-square foot entertainment hub located in the infield of the "World Center of Racing." UNOH, located in Lima, Ohio, invented the first high-performance motorsports degree program in the country, and in 2006, opened the largest U.S. facility dedicated to learning the science of high-performance vehicles – a seven-acre, 70,000-square foot high performance motorsports complex.

The UNOH Fanzone, which first opened in 2005 at the "World Center of Racing," is located between the NASCAR premier series garages and NASCAR XFINITY Series garages and puts fans in the middle of the event action with fan forums, historic displays, autograph sessions, entertainment and merchandise as well as access to pre-race activities. Other amenities include the Fan Deck on top of the NASCAR premier series garages and garage viewing windows with autograph slots.

"We're excited to continue to grow our relationship with the University of Northwestern Ohio," Daytona International Speedway President Chip Wile said. "UNOH is widely recognized throughout the country for their motorsports degree program. We look forward to them engaging with our fans in the UNOH Fanzone, which delivers the most fan-friendly, hands-on experience in all of motorsports."

"We are thrilled to expand our partnership with Daytona International Speedway and have another venue to share with motorsports fans the unique educational opportunity students can get at the University of Northwestern Ohio," UNOH president, Dr. Jeffrey A. Jarvis said. "Students from all 50 states and 49 countries have attended the University and we have UNOH graduates working in all facets of motorsports from dirt-track teams all the way up through NASCAR to NHRA and beyond. The UNOH Fanzone experience will bring to life what our students experience in the classroom and shop every day."

UNOH will also continue to serve as the Official Education Partner of Daytona International Speedway and have an on-site marketing presence at the facility including event signage, display space, tickets and hospitality. Financial terms were not disclosed.

In 1992, UNOH invented the first high-performance motorsports degree program in the country and has since been training students with the latest technology available in the industry. Students receive first-hand motorsports mechanical training from instructors who’ve spent years in the field.

IRGSE And SRMS Announce Multi-Year Partnership

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 12/15/2016 - 05:35
IRG Sports + Entertainment (IRGSE), a global company that works with marketing and promoting of sports and live entertainment experiences, and Street Racing Made Safe (SRMS), a national promoter of street racing lifestyle style event announced a three-year partnership which will see over 100 race-events from this fast growing segment of racing lifestyle programming.

SRMS will bring their program to IRGSE-owned properties; Palm Beach International Raceway, Memphis International Raceway, Maryland International Raceway and Cordova International Raceway starting in 2017 and via IRGSE’s ownership of the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) sanctioning body will make SRMS events and racing available to IHRA sanctioned tracks at reduced rates delivering more positive bottom line financial benefit to IHRA member tracks.

“I’ve watched Street Racing Made Safe grow from a small local event to a major grass roots movement. Mario Ojito has done a tremendous job getting kids off the streets and on to the track,” stated Mark Gold, owner of The Ticket Clinic. “As the founder of The Ticket Clinic, a law firm, obviously we make money representing people charged with racing tickets. But as a father, if SRMS saves just one life, I’d rather make nothing on those tickets.  I’ve been to many of the events. They are fun, organized, well run and well attended. SRMS saves lives.”

SRMS is the only 501(c)3 non-profit organization to legally battle the unmet need of illegal street racing across the country. The organization hosts safe and organized roll racing events, which allows street racers to compete against each other in a safe and controlled environment. The race cars are the same you would see on the highway, at a red light or at your local car meet. SRMS gives street racing teams the opportunity to race without worrying about road conditions, crashing into public property, hitting innocent bystanders or being arrested by police officers. In addition, spectators can watch these races from the safety of the track stands with a music and lifestyle component complimentary to the audience’s interests.

“Street Racing Made Safe is very excited about our partnership with IRGSE. SRMS was designed with a goal of eliminating street racing on public roads,” stated Mario Ojito Jr., SRMS co-owner, founder and president. “This partnership helps spread this program across the nation, which allows us to potentially save thousands of people that die from illegal street racing every year. There are so many people who watch our Street Racing Made Safe Top 10 List web series and ask for our program to be brought to their area, now the IRGSE partnership helps us accomplish this.”

“This partnership is a big win for the street racing community. We now have the chance to illustrate street racing and its community in a positive light,” commented Christopher Harris, SRMS co-owner and vice president. “The perception is that street racers are misfits, but that is far from the truth. They are doctors, lawyers, teenagers, teachers and police offices. They just love to race, but never had a safe place to do it. SRMS provides the outlet and IRGSE just gave them a few more.”

The SRMS event has been a staple at the Palm Beach International Raceway facility for the last two years and is experiencing major success in curtailing illegal street racing. The new partnership will include the remaining properties with 36 events slated to run across the IRGSE facilities in 2017. The program will expand in 2018 and beyond to include running in conjunction with IHRA sanctioned events in the United States and Australia.

“We have witnessed the success of SRMS firsthand with their street racing lifestyle events held at Palm Beach International Raceway,” stated Chris Lencheski, IRGSE vice chairman of the board and CEO. “What they have done with this program is incredible and we are happy to join with them in their campaign to bring Illegal Street racing off of the streets and into the safe environment of our professional racing facilities. The new partnership with SRMS is one of many new and exciting things we have happening within the IRGSE-owned properties and the IHRA for 2017 and beyond.”

SRMS founder and president, Mario Ojito Jr. lost his best friend and his father in two separate motorcycle accidents. Because of the tragic loses, Mario wondered why there weren’t any safe and legal outlets for street racers to race off of public streets. In 2011, Mario created Street Racing Made Safe and has expanded the events nationally to help bring racers off of the streets.

New 2017 IMSA WeatherTech Regulations Released

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 12/15/2016 - 05:10
International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) officials today released the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sporting Regulations, which featured some key revisions for the upcoming season.

Beginning with the season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 28-29, the start of all WeatherTech Championship races will include the entire field in one pack taking the green flag at the same time. Previously, the field was separated into two categories, Prototype and GT. The Prototype category included all Prototype (P) and Prototype Challenge (PC) cars, while the GT category included cars from both the GT Le Mans (GTLM) and GT Daytona (GTD) classes.

The two categories were separated by several seconds and each received its own green flag to start the race. While the starting grid for each race will continue to be separated by category, the entire field will start each race together.

“While we saw some benefits of split starts, having the entire field start the race together will offer more excitement for our race fans both onsite and watching on television,” said IMSA CEO Ed Bennett. “The 2017 WeatherTech Championship will include breathtaking machinery throughout the field. By putting the entire field together in one group, the opening moments of our races will be that much more exhilarating and set the tone for fantastic competition all the way to the checkered flag.”

The 2017 Sporting Regulations also will include a number of revisions to the way points are awarded at each event.

If all drivers in each car achieve all drive-time requirements, the car and all drivers will be awarded the number of points associated with their finishing position in the race. If a team’s drivers do not meet the drive-time requirements, the car and drivers will be placed at the back of their class in the finishing order and receive the points associated with that position, subject to drive-time infraction order priority.

Additionally, the car that achieves the fastest race lap in each class and each driver in the lineup will receive one bonus point. The single bonus point awarded at each event to all drivers and teams that started the race has been eliminated.

Several WeatherTech Championship competitors are currently participating in an IMSA-sanctioned test for P, GTLM and GTD race cars at Daytona International Speedway.

Speedway Children's Charities Charlotte Chapter Raises $815,000

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 12/14/2016 - 08:40
Speedway Children's Charities officials announced at a special grant presentation that the nonprofit's Charlotte Motor Speedway chapter distributed $815,000 in grants to 93 charitable organizations in 11 area counties this year.

The Charlotte chapter's contributions represent an increase of $70,000 from last year's mark and an uptick of nearly $400,000 compared to 2014. Since its inception in 1982, the Charlotte chapter has raised more than $11 million to support children with everything from educational support to the basic need of a coat or meal.

"It is a tremendous privilege to distribute these funds to 93 deserving local charities that make a positive impact on children's lives," Charlotte Motor Speedway President and General Manager and Speedway Children's Charities President Marcus Smith said. "The holidays represent a time for giving and we are proud that Speedway Children's Charities' abundant efforts continue to help children in need in the Charlotte region and across the country."

Most of the money raised this year came from the Sonic Automotive Speedway Children's Charities Gala presented by The NRA Teach Freedom Foundation in May and the SCC Golf Tournament in June. Other funds were raised through auctions including pre-race rides with NASCAR drivers at Charlotte Motor Speedway and unique NASCAR memorabilia.

The Charlotte chapter of SCC is one of eight that are located at each of the Speedway Motorsports, Inc. (SMI) tracks. In 2016, the eight chapters raised $3,101,207.63 nationally to help children in need. Over the years, SCC has awarded nearly $49 million to nonprofit organizations throughout the nation.

"Through the invaluable support of our volunteers, donors and sponsors, Speedway Children's Charities' Charlotte chapter will be able to help thousands of needy children," said Lisa Starnes, the director of the Charlotte chapter of Speedway Children's Charities. "I thank everyone who has donated to the chapter and aided in our work this year. Their generosity is greatly appreciated."

In the holiday spirit of giving, the Charlotte chapter also surprised Charlotte-based Discovery Home Care by doubling its original $20,000 grant in an announcement honoring the organization's late founder, Sandra Williams.

"This means so much to us," Discovery Home Care Co-Founder Tammy Legette said. "Speedway Children's Charities has supported us since 2008 and with their help, we are able to do some special things with our kids, like give them birthday parties, that we couldn't otherwise provide."

Summit Motorsports Park Named 'Track Of The Year'

During an engaging NMCA awards ceremony on Dec. 9, 2016 at the Indiana Convention Center, Summit Motorsports Park was named 2016 NMCA Track of the Year.

"NMCA is proud to have Summit Motorsports Park as a partner track, but even more proud to have it as a close and personal friend," said Steve Wolcott, president and CEO of ProMedia Events, which produces NMCA, NMCA WEST and NMRA. "The B Guarantee (the park's pledge to present the best show possible at the best price possible) was instrumental in the development of our own ProPledge customer service program, which has helped NMCA grow."

The 2016 NMCA event at Summit Motorsports Park saw nearly twice as many cars and spectators as the 2015 event despite an unfavorable weather forecast, which Summit Motorsports Park president Bill Bader, Jr. attributes to the caliber of cars and competition featured.

Summit Motorsport Park, which also was named NMCA Track of the Year in 2013 and 2014, will welcome the 16th Annual NMCA All American Muscle SuperNationals Aug. 24-27, 2017, 1300 State Route 18, Norwalk, Ohio.
