Len Sammons Motorsports Productions will present indoor three-quarter-midget racing February 9-10, 2018, at Times Union Center in Albany, New York.

The inaugural Albany Indoor Race is a new event for New York State, modeled after events run previously in Atlantic City, N.J., and in recent years in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Trenton, New Jersey.

The last indoor auto racing of any sort in New York state was held in 2002 at the Niagara Falls Convention Center; that venue was since repurposed for a casino.

The two days of racing will consist of a full program of racing for TQ midgets on both nights, including features both days; slingshots will be scheduled for both nights.

The Albany race is the finale of the Len Sammons Motorsports Productions Indoor Auto Racing season, and will be where the 2017-18 series champion is crowned.

PRI 2017 Foyt Exhibit Details Released

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 08/16/2017 - 11:03
It’s been 40 years since AJ Foyt recorded his record-setting fourth Indianapolis 500 win, and Performance Racing Industry is honoring the occasion with a special display at the 2017 PRI Trade Show.

AJ Foyt: A Legendary Exhibition traces the icon’s rise from the dirt tracks of Texas to the apex of auto racing, and pays tribute to one of the most diverse and successful careers in motorsports history. Lest we forget, Foyt is still IndyCar’s most prolific driver, with 65 career victories, and he remains the only competitor ever to take top honors at the Indy 500, the Daytona 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

In addition to rare memorabilia and photos from Foyt’s personal collection, PRI visitors will get to see the 1961 Bowes Seal Fast Special, 1964 Sheraton Thompson Special, 1967 Sheraton Thompson Special, and 1977 Gilmore Coyote that Foyt drove to 500 glory.

“We’re honored to have AJ Foyt: A Legendary Exhibition among the new events and exhibitions at the 30th Anniversary PRI Trade Show,” noted PRI General Manager Bill Miller. “It gives attendees a rare opportunity to see up-close some of the vehicles that Foyt raced in his legendary career.”

The display is being made possible through a generous partnership with Director and Curator Ellen Bireley and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which is currently hosting the exhibit through October 31.

At PRI, it will be housed in meeting rooms 6000 and 6100 of the Indiana Convention Center, and will be accessible from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day of the Show, December 7, 8 and 9.

Former Skip Barber Advisors Open Racing School

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 08/16/2017 - 09:04
As recently reported, the iconic Skip Barber Racing School (SBRS) has received US Bankruptcy Court approval in New York to sell all their assets and intellectual property to Liquid Asset Partners, bringing one of the longest and most storied histories in the driving-instruction game to an end.

Now, a group of former SBRS coaches has banded together to start a new school that continues the Skip Barber tradition while also addressing some changes.

Headed by former Skip Barber Master Instructor Peter Stolz, the LevelUp Racing School just held its maiden event on August 10 a few hours north of Chicago at Blackhawk Farms Raceway.

Considered a “soft start,” the school began with seven student drivers and instruction from Ray Scott, Steve DeBrecht, Jim Pace and Keith Watts.

Similar to Skip Barber, students spent two days receiving driving instructions and practicing in Spec Miatas, with all of the traditional elements of Skip Barber: a morning classroom talk by Jim Pace, the reliance on the “stop box” coaching in which drivers are observed from corner stations, and the high number of minutes spent watching and evaluating fellow would-be racers at speed.

A couple of changes from Skip Barber include more track time, better-condition Spec Miata’s, and a supply of Hoosier SM7 tires, which are said to provide more grip than the BFGoodrich street tires previously used by Skip Barber.

Terry Earwood is also listed as a LevelUp Racing School instructor, according to the website. For more information, visit www.levelupracingschool.com.

McLaren Appoints Tim Bampton As Group Communications Director

McLaren Technology Group has appointed Tim Bampton to lead its strategic, corporate and brand communications, including McLaren Racing and McLaren Applied Technologies.

In his role of Group Communications Director, Bampton will report to McLaren Technology Group's Chief Marketing Officer, John Allert. Bampton will oversee and direct the group’s media operations, corporate and brand communications, and consumer and lifestyle communications for its partners and initiatives such as McLaren’s e-sports project, the World’s Fastest Gamer.

With more than 25 years’ experience in motorsport communications and sponsorship, Bampton’s involvement in Formula 1 began in the mid-1990s with a six-year spell at Williams in its media and marketing team. This was followed by a period managing Honda’s F1 communications in the early 2000s, before consulting to the Interpublic Group on its motorsport assets through Octagon’s management of Silverstone and the British Grand Prix.

Bampton then co-founded a sponsorship communications agency, working first with British American Tobacco in its time as owner and title sponsor of BAR Honda, followed by Diageo and Johnnie Walker, still a sponsor of McLaren today. He later joined the motorsport marketing agency JMI, where he built the company’s global marketing communications group servicing a wide variety of international brands and corporations.

Bampton comes to McLaren from CSM Sport & Entertainment, the global sports marketing agency, where he served as Chief Marketing Officer.

Wells Fargo has donated $25,000 towards the Bryan Clauson Suite Tower construction at the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame & Museum in Knoxville, Iowa. Half of the $3.4 million-dollar project had been funded by generous donors prior to the 57th Annual 5-hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals.

The ground was broken for the new tower in Mid-June.
