Former Skip Barber Advisors Open Racing School

As recently reported, the iconic Skip Barber Racing School (SBRS) has received US Bankruptcy Court approval in New York to sell all their assets and intellectual property to Liquid Asset Partners, bringing one of the longest and most storied histories in the driving-instruction game to an end.

Now, a group of former SBRS coaches has banded together to start a new school that continues the Skip Barber tradition while also addressing some changes.

Headed by former Skip Barber Master Instructor Peter Stolz, the LevelUp Racing School just held its maiden event on August 10 a few hours north of Chicago at Blackhawk Farms Raceway.

Considered a “soft start,” the school began with seven student drivers and instruction from Ray Scott, Steve DeBrecht, Jim Pace and Keith Watts.

Similar to Skip Barber, students spent two days receiving driving instructions and practicing in Spec Miatas, with all of the traditional elements of Skip Barber: a morning classroom talk by Jim Pace, the reliance on the “stop box” coaching in which drivers are observed from corner stations, and the high number of minutes spent watching and evaluating fellow would-be racers at speed.

A couple of changes from Skip Barber include more track time, better-condition Spec Miata’s, and a supply of Hoosier SM7 tires, which are said to provide more grip than the BFGoodrich street tires previously used by Skip Barber.

Terry Earwood is also listed as a LevelUp Racing School instructor, according to the website. For more information, visit www.levelupracingschool.com.
