AETC—An Outstanding Industry Event

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/15/2013 - 04:36
One of my favorite industry events outside of the Performance Racing Industry Trade Show is the Advanced Engineering Technology Conference (AETC) for race engine builders.

I first attended an AETC many years ago. I remember one of my first AETC gatherings, when it was held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and I found myself sitting between Grumpy Jenkins and Ryan Falconer. That informed me pretty dramatically how valuable the AETC experience had become for people in the profession of building race engines.

Some of my favorite moments during AETC conferences took place during the breaks, or during lunch. I was able to meet with race engine builders who were new to me, and get their stories. I could be part of conversations that updated me in a very ‘real life’ way exactly where this segment of the racing business was in terms of successes, challenges and trends.

There’s really no other gathering of race engine builders like it. Nor is there such an outstanding curriculum for race engine builders in any other event. At PRI, it was a big day for us when the AETC team told us they would co-locate the event with the PRI Trade Show.

The AETC takes place December 9–11, in the Indiana Convention Center.

I highly recommend participating in the AETC this year...and every year. There are solutions to be found in the technical presentations and in the conversations with others in the same business.

Plus, as master of ceremonies, Harold Bettes always makes it fun.

The speakers include the following:

•    Harold Bettes – Power Technology Consultants
•    Lee Carducci – Arrow Racing Engines
•    Cecil Stevens – Illusions Engine Development
•    Bill McKnight – MAHLE
•    Laura Shehan – Holley Performance Products
•    Jon Sams – Holley Performance Products
•    Keith Jones – Total Seal Piston Rings
•    Dan Jesel – Jesel Valvetrain Innovation
•    Vince Roman – Burns Stainless LLC
•    Ben Strader  – EFI University
•    Chris Paulsen – C&R Racing Inc.
•    Greg West – Fel-Pro Gaskets
•    Stephen Golya – Performance Motorsports
•    Dane Kalinowski – JE Pistons
•    Brian Kurn – Four Stroke Design
•    Ozzie Hutchins – Roush Yates Engines
•    Bruce Baldwin – Oliver Race Parts

I hope to see you there!

Scott Gardner Named IHRA President

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/15/2013 - 03:46
IRG Sports + Entertainment (IRG), parent company for the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) and multiple motorsports facilities, announced today that Aaron Polburn has stepped down as President and General Manager of the IHRA and Scott Gardner, the longtime owner and promoter of Cordova Dragway Park (CDP), has been named the new President effective today.

Polburn, who had been at the helm of IHRA since 2004, has stepped down for personal reasons and will transition the company to Gardner over the next two weeks. Gardner will lead the IHRA team based out of the current Norwalk, Ohio, office.

Cordova Dragway Park, home of the World Series of Drag Racing and former Nitro Jam national events, will return as an IHRA-sanctioned Member Track. Gardner will pass the day-to-day management of CDP to his wife and Vice President of CDP, Laura Gardner and Chris McMahan, Director of Operations. CDP will host the formerly TBA 12th event on the Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series (NJDRS) 2014 North American Tour.

The IHRA recently announced that the NJDRS 2014 North American Tour will feature a number of enhancements for the upcoming racing season including the addition of a national points fund, the return of traditional drag racing, a new Fan Zone pit experience and more.

As Gardner moves from CDP to lead the IHRA, IRG will acquire CDP as part of its portfolio of motorsports facilities and take over the management at the end of the 2014 season. Also under Gardner’s co-ownership, Eddyville Raceway Park in Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Cedar Falls Raceway in Cedar Falls, Iowa, will also become IHRA-sanctioned Member Tracks. With the addition of these three Member Tracks, the IHRA now sanctions 112 facilities in five countries.

“It’s a great honor and a huge responsibility to take over the position of President of the IHRA,” said Gardner. “The IHRA brand is something I have always felt was a viable drag racing organization. I am confident I can bring new ideas and renewed energy to the table, while staying true to the sportsman racing at the core of the organization.”

“We wish Aaron the best and appreciate all that he has done for the IHRA over the years and for his service to IRG since our acquisition earlier this year,” said Jason Rittenberry, CFE, President and Chief Executive Officer of IRG. “We are very pleased to have Scott join the IRG as the new President. As a well-respected promoter in the drag racing industry, he was an excellent choice for us. With Scott leading the charge, the IHRA’s national touring series will be reinvigorated and revamped along with other exciting developments coming in the near future.”

In addition, IRG has also announced the hiring one of new staff member and the promotion of another.

Franki Buckman, former vice president and general manager of Firebird International Raceway, has been appointed vice president and general manager of Southwestern International Raceway. Dale Gann has been promoted from executive vice president of operations to vice president and general manager of Palm Beach International Raceway.

SCCA Sets National Solo Schedules

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/15/2013 - 03:38
The 2014 Tire Rack SCCA National Solo schedule, including Championship Tour, Match Tour, and ProSolo events, was announced today to participants. The schedule features 27 events, spread out over the three formats.

The Tire Rack SCCA Championship Tour season begins March 15-16 in Cecil, Georgia, at the South Georgia Motorsports Park. A traditional location on the Solo calendar, the event falls just one week after the SCCA National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina—close enough for those across the country to participate in both events.

The Tire Rack ProSolo Series season begins one week later at another traditional site, March 22-23 in Blytheville, Arkansas. Blytheville also appears at the end of the Championship Tour schedule, Sept. 27-28 following the Tire Rack Solo National Championships. The end of the season event will feature a permanent course beginning in 2014, to remain consistent moving forward, with the local community working with SCCA to develop incentives and rewards for track record holders—by nature, a rarity in the Solo community.

The second season of the Tire Rack Match Tour format begins April 12-13 in Wilmington, Ohio. The former hub of DHL Shipping’s US operations, the airport site is wide, smooth and provides options for a variety of courses.

The options available at Wilmington make the area a prime site for Solo competition, and the schedule reflects that. Wilmington is the only location on the schedule to host all three formats, as the ProSolo and Championship Tours will visit on back to back weekends, July 26-27 and Aug. 2-3.

Packwood, Washington, hosts back to back events in early July. The Championship Tour visits July 5-6, followed immediately by the ProSolo July 12-13. The Packwood site is legendary for its scenery, beauty, and all around good fun, providing an excellent vacation destination for out-of-towners.

Crows Landing, near Patterson, California, returns to the schedule in a big way after a 20 year absence. The large concrete pad, used in the past by both the military and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for training exercises, hosts a Pro Solo, June 7-8, and a Championship Tour, June 14-15. The last SCCA National event held at the site was a ProSolo in 1994.

While an event “in Atlanta” has been on the schedule several times over the years, for the first time in recent history the event will occur in the city proper. The Turner Field parking lots have been secured for the May 17-18 Match Tour event.

Also returning are the traditional Spring Nationals at the Lincoln Airpark on Memorial Day weekend, featuring the ProSolo on Friday and Saturday, May 23-24, and the Championship Tour, May 25-26.

Collectively, the events make up the “Road to Lincoln” and the 42nd Tire Rack Solo National Championship. The week-long event begins with the ProSolo Finale, Aug. 30-31, and the crowning of National Solo Champions September 2-5 at the Lincoln Airpark.

IndyCar Legend Dario Franchitti Retires From Racing

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 11/15/2013 - 03:28
Three-time Indianapolis 500 winner and four-time IndyCar Series champion Dario Franchitti announced via a statement released by his longtime team, Target Chip Ganassi Racing, that he will be unable to continue his auto racing career as a result of the injuries he suffered in a crash in the Grand Prix of Houston last month. The IndyCar Series legend ends his career with 31 Indy car wins (tied for eighth on the all-time list) and 33 poles (sixth on the all-time list).

Statement from Dario Franchitti:

“Since my racing accident in Houston, I have been in the expert care of some of the leading doctors and nurses, all of whom have made my health, my safety and my recovery their top priority. I am eternally grateful for the medical care I have received over the last several weeks. I'd also like to thank my family and friends for their unbelievable support.

"One month removed from the crash and based upon the expert advice of the doctors who have treated and assessed my head and spinal injuries post accident, it is their best medical opinion that I must stop racing. They have made it very clear that the risks involved in further racing are too great and could be detrimental to my long term well-being. Based on this medical advice, I have no choice but to stop.

"Racing has been my life for over 30 years and it's really tough to think that the driving side is now over. I was really looking forward to the 2014 season with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, with a goal of winning a fourth Indianapolis 500 and a fifth IndyCar Series championship.

"I'd like to thank all my fellow competitors, teammates, crew and sponsors for their incredible support over the course of this amazing ride. I'd also like to thank Hogan Racing, Team KOOL Green and Andretti Green Racing for the opportunities to compete on the racetrack, and especially Target Chip Ganassi Racing, who have become like a family to me since I joined their team back in 2008. I would be remiss if I didn't thank all my fans around the world. I can't thank you enough for standing by my side for all these years.

"I'll forever look back on my time racing in CART and the IndyCar Series with fond memories and the relationships I've forged in the sport will last a lifetime.

"Hopefully in time, I'll be able to continue in some off-track capacity with the IndyCar Series. I love open-wheel racing and I want to see it succeed. I'll be working with Chip to see how I can stay involved with the team, and with all the amazing friends I've made over the years at Target.
"As my buddy Greg Moore would say, ‘See you up front'”

Statement from Chip Ganassi, team owner:

“Dario Franchitti has done so much for Target Chip Ganassi Racing so it will be very disappointing to not see him in our cars next season. But simply put, Dario is a motorsports legend and will be sorely missed on the race track by everyone in the paddock and in the stands. His contributions to the sport of motor racing are too many to list but I can tell you that they go way beyond what he has done on the track. What's both impressive and unique about Dario is that he has always been a student of racing, someone who not only appreciates the actual science of the sport but also the rich heritage of those racers that have gone before him. This news only serves as the start of next chapter in Dario Franchitti's racing career – which I expect will be here with Target Chip Ganassi Racing.”

Statement from Gregg Steinhafel, CEO, Target:

“We have been proud to watch Dario emerge as one of the most exciting drivers in IndyCar, winning three series championships and becoming a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner during his time with Target Chip Ganassi Racing. Not only has he had a storied career, but his popularity with Target's guests, his tremendous contributions to racing and his engagement in our community giving efforts have made him an integral part of Team Target. While we'll miss seeing him drive behind the Bullseye, Dario will always be a member of the Target racing family, and we look forward to seeing him excel in the next phase of his career.”

Career summary

Franchitti joined Target Chip Ganassi Racing in 2008, and in just five seasons delivered two Indianapolis 500 wins (2010 and 2012), the first-ever run of three-consecutive IndyCar Series titles by a Target driver (2009-2011), 13 Indy car wins, 16 pole positions and a win in the 2008 Rolex 24 at Daytona. He finished the 2013 IndyCar Series season with four podiums, seven top-five and 11 top-10 finishes, and his four pole positions were more than any other driver this season.

Overall, Franchitti made 265 career Indy car starts. His four championships are second only to AJ Foyt on the all-time list, and he is only the third driver in Indy car history to win at least three consecutive titles. Franchitti became one of only five drivers to win the Indianapolis 500 and the series title in the same season more than once.

His 92 podiums place him fifth, his 119 top-five finishes place him tied for sixth and his 29 second-place finishes rank him 10th on the all-time lists. In 2007, Franchitti became first professional race car driver to ever capture the 12 Hours of Sebring, the Indianapolis 500, an open wheel title and the Rolex 24 At Daytona consecutively, accomplishing the feat in less than one year. Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt are the only others to win the four titles, but neither did so in succession. By winning the 2012 Indianapolis 500, Franchitti became just the 10th driver in history to win the race three times, and ends his driving career as the winningest driver in U.S. open-wheel history from Great Britain.

National 100 Added To NDRL Schedule

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 11/14/2013 - 06:44
For the first time in the storied history of the event, the National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway will become sanctioned in 2014.

Officials of the popular Phenix City, Alabama, oval and officials of the National Dirt Racing League announced that the 40th edition of the South’s longest running Dirt Late Model event will serve as the season finale for the NDRL. The 40th Annual National 100 is scheduled for Oct. 30-Nov. 2 and will again pay $20,000 to win along with $5000 in lap leader bonus money.

“What an exclamation point to put on our first full season of touring. To be associated with an event like the National 100, with the history and prestige that the event carries, is an honor for the NDRL,” Series Founder John Kennedy said. “When we started planning out our schedule strategy East Alabama was on our list of tracks that we wanted to work with. They have such a great fan base and such an awesome facility. We are very proud to be working with the Thomas Family and the entire East Alabama staff. We are going to be working hard to help the event continue to grow and keep the national spotlight on this event. I couldn’t be happier.”

The National 100 has deep roots in the south and boasts a winners’ list that reads like a who’s who of Dirt Late Model Racing. Scott Bloomquist tops the list as an eight-time National 100 winner. Other multiple-time winners include Freddy Smith, Jeff Purvis, Randle Chupp, Bobby Thomas, Jonathan Davenport and the defending event winner Rick Eckert. Eckert scored his third National 100 victory this year in dramatic fashion with a breath-taking outside move on Tim McCreadie coming to the white flag.

“That is such a fun race to run. It’s a hundred laps and the track changes so much and your car changes back and forth, you are good and then terrible and then back to good. So that makes it a really fun deal,” Eckert said. “Having the NDRL to sanction it is cool. That’s the biggest race there is that late in the year and it always draws good crowds and car counts and the NDRL deal will only allow it to get bigger.”

The Thomas Family is equally enthused about having the NDRL sanction the event.

“We just thought that the NDRL would be a good fit for us. We want to do everything we can to continue to grow the National 100 and make it bigger and better for our fans and drivers. And this just seemed to offer us an opportunity to do that,” said EAMS Manager Beverly Thompson. “It will be their last event of the season so that will add another element of interest to the race for everyone. John and his staff have a very good program put together and it was just a win for us and for the series to do it. We are very excited about it.”

More details regarding the 40th Annual NDRL-sanctioned National 100 at East Alabama Motor Speedway will be announced soon.
