IHRA Names Two New Division Directors

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 04:59
The International Hot Rod Association is pleased to announce that Josh Peake and Jim Woods, two longtime faces within the IHRA, have been named division directors for Division 9 and Division 2 respectively.

The two veteran officials will take over their respective divisions effective immediately, with Peake servicing racers in the Carolinas in the popular Raiders Division and Woods taking over in the southeast in IHRA’s Heat Wave Division.

“We are very excited to welcome Jim and Josh to the family,” said IHRA Vice President Skooter Peaco. “I have had the pleasure of working with both of them for many years and they are definitely the right guys for the job. They will be taking over for a very talented individual in Satch Gragg, but we are certain that Jim and Josh will be up for the task and will help us continue to grow our sportsman programs throughout, not only the divisions they will occupy, but throughout the country.”

Peake is a very familiar face to racers throughout the country, especially in Division 9 where he has served as a second-generation starter for many seasons. Following in the footsteps of his father, IHRA national event starter Clyde Peake, Josh is a welcome addition to the IHRA family as he takes over the most populous of all of the IHRA divisions.

Woods, a veteran tech official who essentially wrote the book on Super Stock and Stock racing, will take over as division director in his backyard of the Heat Wave Division, servicing tracks in Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, among others.

The IHRA is thrilled to welcome these two talented individuals to the family as they take over two of the premier divisions in the country.

NMRA Releases Ford Nationals 2014 Schedule

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 04:51
The NMRA Ford Nationals Series is pleased to announce its 2014 event schedule.  Next year will feature the NMRA’s 16th anniversary tour with special events planned at each and every race.

The #1 all-Ford Motorsport show in the United States will feature a strong schedule, more heads-up racing, and exciting special events. Over five thousand racers and car show participants will be competing for fame and fortune as national bragging rights are on the line as well as the richest purse and contingency program of any Ford-only series.

As usual, the NMRA season opener is the 20th Annual NMRA Spring Break Shootout held March 6-9 at Bradenton Motorsports Park (Bradenton, FL). The Spring Break Shootout kicks off on Thursday, March 6th at a special Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords Open House. This free event is open to anyone and will feature free parts raffle, tour facility, free food and drinks, music, and much more. For more information log-on to Muscle Mustang’s website as we get closer to the event. The NMRA season goes live on Friday, March 7th and is followed by a traditional kick-off party at Hooters of Bradenton with a car show, burnouts, and famous Hooters’ girls. The rest of the event will feature the best in NMRA Ford drag racing including 100+ cars in TREMEC True Street with a qualified field in the Muscle Mustangs Spring Break Shootout class on Sunday. Adding a unique flare to this event is a special Cobra Jet Showdown, presented by Ford Racing, that will feature factory-built hot rods in an 8 and 9 second slugfest.

A little over a month later the NMRA series travels up the road to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, the weekend of April 10-13 for the 6th Annual NMRA/NMCA All-Star Nationals. Both NMRA and NMCA racers converge on one facility to let loose a fury of horsepower in one of the largest muscle car events of the year. Be part of the 15,000 fans sitting in the Atlanta Dragway stands watching the explosive head-to-head action on track.

The third stop on tour is where we pay tribute to Ford’s factory hot rod shop, the Special Vehicle Team (SVT), with a special SVT Shootout. The facility hosting the NMRA event and SVT tribute is none other than the stunning mid-Atlantic facility, Maryland International Raceway (MIR) in Mechanicsville, MD. Keep the weekend of May 2-4 open, especially if you are an SVT fanatic. This SVT specialty event-within-an-event features special SVT racing and show categories. First on the SVT list is the Terminator vs. Shelby GT500 Shootout where bragging rights will be settled. The SVT Lightning truck community is one of the most exciting SVT brands as evident by the sheer number of trucks still being modified and turned into drag strip haulers.  Lightning racers are invited to join the popular Truck & Lightning category where they can race alongside legends like Johnny Lightning in his supercharged truck. TREMEC True Street, presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, is always one of the largest classes run on Saturday at each NMRA event. There will be a separate SVT-only True Street class (’93 to ’13 SVT cars & trucks only) with its own cash and prizes—exclusively for SVT racers! SVT True Street racers will make 3 consecutive passes down the ¼ mile and $250 + 6’ trophy will be awarded to the overall fastest, and $100 + plaque will be awarded to each racer with the closest average to 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 seconds!

Next, NMRA and its racers head to one of the most popular racetracks in the country, Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio, for an extra special event…the NMRA Ford Super Nationals. The weekend of June 12-15 has been reserved for this all-Ford extravaganza and this Norwalk event will play host to two exciting affairs. First off is the official Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords All-Female Shootout, where the fastest lady drag racers in the U.S. will compete for cash and bragging rights.  Also scheduled for the Norwalk blowout is the True Street Battle Royale, presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords. This is certain to be the largest True Street event of the year with a special participant party and major class coverage.

The NMRA and NMCA series are brought together a second time in 2014 at Route 66 Raceway (Joliet, IL) in a four-day bash July 10-13. Unlike the All-Star Nationals where breaking records is the theme, the Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing puts both series head-to-head in a special Shootout where the NMRA class winners compete against their NMCA rivals for bonus cash and a chance to take home a world famous Nitto Tire Diamond Tree Super Bowl Ring.  The diamond-laden ring is a special design exclusively for the Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing shootout. Team NMRA has been dominating this event with 6 team wins in the first 8 NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl events.

The 16th Annual NMRA All-Ford World Finals will invade Beech Bend Raceway October 2-5, and Mustangs will take over the city of Bowling Green, which has played host to major Ford events since the first World Ford Challenge back in 1998.  The NMRA World Finals is special—not just because it’s the largest all-Ford event of the year—but also because championships are on the line and racers leave nothing to chance. World championships and world records are a big part of the NMRA World Finals as racers put in their final effort to win the exclusive Nitto Tire Diamond Tree Championship Rings. This extra special event will showcase everything from wheel-standing Outlaws and Renegades to stock cars and everything in between.  The TREMEC True Street class, presented by Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, has averaged well over 100 competitors the past 2 years and is a testimonial to the crazy street-legal performance that’s possible with Mustangs and Fords. This 2014 event will also bring together ten of the most powerful, well-engineered, and gorgeous Mustangs from around the U.S. participating in 5.0 Mustang & Super Fords’ King of the Street competition.  Each competitor will be judged on ¼ mile performance, horsepower, and appearance with the overall champ taking home the King of the Street title. The NMRA World Finals will also showcase a Terminator/GT500 Shootout, where the fastest ’03/’04 Cobras and GT500’s will race against each other for yearlong bragging rights.

Each NMRA national event also feature a huge UPR Products All-Ford Car Show, where you will see a sea of color as hundreds of blue oval car show participants shine up and show off their awesome late-model and early Mustangs and Fords.  Magazine editors will be drooling as they search for cover cars & features amongst rows of stock and modified show cars. All NMRA events also feature the largest all-Ford manufacturers midways and swap meets of the year.  Be sure to hit the ATM on the way to any NMRA event so you can bring home great deals on the parts you need.  Finally, hang on to your seats for flame-throwing 300+ mph jet car exhibitions (at select events) and the world famous NMRA burnout contest where past participants have gone as far as blowing tires and destroying engines for the roar of NMRA’s crowd!

Entry Lists Grow For Tudor USCC Tests

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 04:34
With the American Le Mans Series and Grand-Am Series seasons barely over—marking the end of the existence of Grand-Am and the ALMS, since they have merged into the Tudor United SportsCar Championship—formal testing is already beginning for the combined field that will take the green flag at the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona in January, followed by the Mobil 1 12 Hours of Sebring in March.

The first formal public tests are at Sebring, Saturday and Sunday, then at Daytona, Tuesday and Wednesday. While the combined field dropped the LMP1 prototype cars from the ALMS, and the GX class from Grand-Am, all the other classes that raced in the two series in 2013 will be on the grid in 2014, though some will be racing in different categories, against different cars. The tests not only give teams a chance to shake down the cars—some modified by new rules packages the USCC mandates—but also to spend some track time with drivers that may be unfamiliar with each other, since there was only moderate crossover between the Grand-Am and ALMS drivers in the past few years.

At the moment, there are 19 cars signed up to test at Sebring, 25 at Daytona. More last-minute entries are expected. For Sebring, there are five prototypes, two GTLM cars, and 12 GTD cars. The Prototypes are a combination of the Grand-Am Daytona Prototype cars, and the ALMS LMP2 prototype cars, with specifications adjusted to make the two very different cars run at, hopefully, the same approximate speed.

The GTLM cars are the GT-class cars (Chevrolet Corvettes, SRT Vipers, BMW Z4s, for example) that ran in the ALMS series last year, while the GTD entries and cars that ran in the Grand-Am GT class last year, including Audi R8s, Ferrari 458s and the new Porsche GT Americas, a variant of the 911.

For the Daytona test, the 25 entries include seven Prototypes, two PC-class cars, three GTLM cars, and 13 GTD cars. The LMP Challenge class is made up of spec cars from the ALMS series that use Oreca chassis and a Chevrolet V8 engine.

The tests also give most of the ALMS teams a chance to try of the Continental tires that have been mandated for Grand-Am, and are now mandated for every class but GTLM, where Michelin seems to be the preferred brand.

Quite a few front-running teams will not be at the tests, either because they don't have their cars ready—the Prototype rules remain a work in progress— or because they don't want to tip their hand to the competition. The Grand-Am DP champion Wayne Taylor Racing team won't be testing, nor will the all-new Chevrolet Corvette C7.R GTLM cars. Last year's 24 Hours champions, the Ganassi Racing team, won't be there, having just recently announced a change from BMW power to the Ford EcoBoost twin-turbo V6, which Michael Shank Racing will also use. Shank won't be testing, either.

With Ganassi dropping BMW power for Ford, and the two-car Team Sahlen Daytona Prototype effort announcing that it won't be back this year, this leaves only the lightly regarded Highway to Help team's Riley with BMW power at present, and that team isn't expected to run a full season. Bob Stalling's Gainsco team has so far announced only that it will compete in the four longest endurance races, including Daytona and Sebring, and may not run the whole season. It isn't testing, either.

Practically all the expected entries for the Rolex 24 should be at the annual "Roar Before the 24" test at Daytona Jan. 3-5.

Given the combined series, a beyond-full field is expected for the 24 Hours and Sebring races. Tentatively, this is how the TUSCC plans to limit entries:

--Rolex 24 at Daytona can handle a field of 60 cars, including a maximum of 19 Prototypes, 10 LMPC cars, 12 GTLM cars and 19 GTD cars.

--At the 12 Hours of Sebring, a field of 63 cars, including a maximum of 20 Prototypes, 10 LMPC cars, 14 GTLM cars and 19 GTD cars.

USGP Most In-Demand Event Ever In Austin

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 11/13/2013 - 04:18
The United States Grand Prix Formula One race is the most in-demand event ever in Austin, Texas.

That's the claim being made by SeatGeek, a site that bills itself as “The Web's Largest Ticket Search Engine.”

According to SeatGeek, the average race fan is spending $470 on the secondary market for a three-day pass. That is 10 percent more than for the same event in 2012.

Prices are also higher for the USGP than for many of the biggest events in all of Texas in recent years, including the 2011 NCAA men's basketball championship in Houston.

Here are a few stats from SeatGeek:

-General admission three-day passes have sold for $155 on average, while grandstand seats at the turns have gone for an average of $495. The most expensive seats are those in the main grandstand area, which are commanding an average of $925 each on the secondary market

-Right now on SeatGeek, the cheapest three-day pass available is a $159 general admission pass, but the site has seen some fans spend as much as $3,000 each on three-day main grandstand passes in the club level.

-Race fans can save an average of 27 percent by purchasing Sunday-only passes, which are being sold for $344 each on the secondary market. Saturday passes can be had for an average of $81 per ticket, and Friday-only passes are cheapest at $36 each on average.

The race is not sold out, and there are still tickets available. However, the average price is being driven up by fans wishing to buy passes for the best seats.

A search of Ticketmaster shows that there are still three-day passes available for the race on the primary market, but they aren't cheap. A race fan can pick up a three-day ticket for $316 in some of the less desirable areas, and as much as $519 for a grandstand ticket in turn 12.

The hardware brand will continue as a partner of drag racing's most successful outfit until 2017. Ford won its third straight and sixth overall NHRA Manufacturers Cup and capped the winning season with Bo Butner’s '13 Mustang in the Stock winner’s circle at the Auto Club NHRA Finals.

Points are awarded in the annual competition to current-year entries in Funny Car, Pro Stock, Super Stock, and Stock as follows: 60 for an eliminator victory, 40 for an eliminator runner-up, and 20 for an eliminator qualification.

Ford, which won the first two Manufacturers Cups in 1964 and 1965, scored 6,820 points to edge out second-place Dodge, which accumulated 6,460 points. Dodge drivers accrued more points at NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series national events than their Ford rivals but earned no points on the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series trail, where the Ford pilots excelled at the grassroots level.

Chevrolet, which has won 19 NHRA Manufacturers Cup titles, finished in third and Toyota fourth.

Quicken Loans To Sponsor PIR's 2014 Sprint Cup Race

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 11/11/2013 - 05:11
Quicken Loans, the nation's largest online mortgage lender, partnered with Phoenix International Raceway (PIR) to announce it will sponsor the Veterans Day weekend NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race on November 9, 2014. An official name and race logo will be announced at a later date.

"All eyes will be on Phoenix International Raceway next year as the end of the season rolls around and drivers are scrapping—literally and figuratively—for every position on the track," said Quicken Loans President and Chief Marketing Officer Jay Farner. "When we looked at the races on the NASCAR schedule, few others offered the same excitement and energy as the fall Phoenix race."

The race will conclude PIR's 50th Anniversary season and a year-long celebration of the track's rich history and contributions to motor sports in the West. Founded in 1964, PIR hosted its first NASCAR-sanctioned event in 1977 with a Winston West Series race. NASCAR's premier circuit, now known as the Sprint Cup Series, made its debut in Phoenix on November 6, 1988, and for the past 25 years, the fall race in Phoenix has been on or near Veterans Day weekend.

"We are proud to partner with Quicken Loans to present the final NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race of our 50th Anniversary season," said Phoenix International Raceway President Bryan R. Sperber. "They are a leader on the track and in the Phoenix business community, and their continuing support of veterans makes this partnership a perfect fit for our Veterans Day Weekend event."

Quicken Loans, who has an office of more than 550 team members in nearby Scottsdale, Arizona, has a strong tradition of honoring active military and veterans. Most notably, the company sponsored the Quicken Loans Carrier Classic on Veterans Day 2011, a first-of-its-kind basketball game that was played on a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and attended by President Obama and this year will run a special veteran-themed paint scheme in this Sunday's Sprint Cup Series race at PIR.

"We continuously look for opportunities to honor our active military and veterans and thank them for their service to our country," said Farner. "What better way to do this than sponsor the Veterans Day race and have our veterans be a focal point of our efforts."

The partnership with PIR comes on the heels of Quicken Loans' announcement that it will join Richard Childress Racing (RCR) in 2014 and serve as primary sponsor of driver Ryan Newman's No. 31 Chevrolet SS for 12 races and associate sponsor for all remaining races, marking the company's third year in the sport. Quicken Loans will also continue as sponsor of Michigan International Speedway's Quicken Loans 400 Sprint Cup Race on June 15, 2014.
