Format Set For Larson’s Outlaw Kart Showcase

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 07/23/2018 - 11:16
The format for the third annual Kyle Larson’s Outlaw Kart Showcase presented by BRANDT has been announced.

This year’s event at Cycleland Speedway in Chico, California, will once again be spread over the two nights of September 3-4.

A change to this year’s format will see a return to qualifying on the clock to set heat race lineups in the Open Division on Monday.

The opener will also see qualifying for the Box Stocks and 250 Intermediates, with heat races to follow for all three divisions. Opens will cap the first night with a 30-lap feature race open to the top 20 fastest qualifiers. The last chance races for the Open division drivers and feature races for all divisions will be contested on Tuesday.

The highest guaranteed purse in Outlaw Kart racing will pay $6,000 to the Open division champion. If the winner of the Showcase on Tuesday is a transfer car from the B-main a $1,000 bonus will be paid, making that driver’s total haul $7,000.

Also, a generous sponsorship from Terry Brown and Mancamp Motorsports has allowed the Box Stock and 250 Intermediate divisions to race for $500 and $1,000 to win, respectively.

Entire DSR Team Makes Major Commitment To Concussion Research

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 07/23/2018 - 11:04
Don Schumacher Racing (DSR) recently made history when all seven drivers of the winningest NHRA Drag Racing team, along with team patriarch and racing legend, Don Schumacher, pledged to donate their brains to the Concussion Legacy Foundation (CLF).

A total of 3,500 former and current athletes and veterans have pledged their brains for research since 2008, but DSR’s public declaration at Bandimere Speedway on July 20, during the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals marked the first time an entire team has committed.

Schumacher and his cadre of drivers, who experience intense vibrations, extreme g-forces and high-speed explosions behind the wheel of their 330-mile-per-hour, 11,000-horsepower nitromethane-burning race cars, will begin a comprehensive brain monitoring process for an in-depth brain profile.

The signing event was part of CLF Project Enlist, a program launched this week by CLF and DSR partner, Infinite Hero Foundation (IHF), to accelerate research on traumatic brain injury (TBI), chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in military veterans. IHF is a non-profit organization that combats the most difficult front-line issues—mental and physical—facing returning military heroes and their families.

After hearing of his pledge, each of Schumacher’s seven drivers—Jack Beckman, Antron Brown, Ron Capps, Matt Hagan, Tommy Johnson Jr., Leah Pritchett and Tony Schumacher—followed suit, making the promise to donate their brains for the advancement of research on the effects of brain trauma in athletes and military veterans.

Schumacher hopes that his team’s public proclamation will help to remove the stigma associated with traumatic brain injuries and inspire others to step forward and make the commitment to pledge their brains to science.

NMRA Announces New Heads-Up Class For 2019

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 07/23/2018 - 10:55
NMRA officials have announced Modified Street, a new heads-up eliminator that will be part of the 2019 NMRA championship class lineup.

The new Modified Street is a limited power adder type category that features looser rules than the new Limited Street class. Modified Street will include regulated power adders that are larger than what is allowed in Limited Street, but smaller than Coyote Modified and Renegade.

“When we released Limited Street last year we received a tremendous amount of feedback,” NMRA General Manager Rollie Miller said. “We noticed a lot of trends in rule requests and suggestions, most notably were modifications and rules that are geared towards a quicker and faster type of car than what we were after for Limited Street.”

Large and small displacement 302/351 Windsor engines and the Modular platforms are allowed. Another departure from Coyote Modified and Limited Street is the inclusion of air-to-water intercoolers, but a weight break for the air-to-air ‘coolers is included.

The cars can be modified with mini-tubs and relocated rear shocks, while the minimum weights will vary with the power adders. Like most small tire categories, DOT drag radials will be required with different options and styles.

The preliminary rules will be released next week as NMRA racers prepare for their annual pilgrimage to Route 66 Raceway for the most recognized street-legal drag race of the year, the NMRA/NMCA Super Bowl of Street-Legal Drag Racing.
