Casey Shuman Takes Over World Of Outlaws Late Model Series

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 01/07/2019 - 10:50
As the 2019 season is set to kick off in just one month, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series has announced racer, owner and promoter Casey Shuman as the new series director.

Raised in Rattlesnake Bend, Arizona, and now residing in Indianapolis, Indiana, Shuman raced non-winged sprints and midgets for more than 20 years before stepping into the role of owner and promoter of the POWRi Wingless Auto Racing (WAR) Series in 2016. Staying true to his competitor roots, Shuman has successfully revitalized the POWRi WAR Sprint Car Series into one of the fastest growing series in the Midwest.

“It’s a true honor to become part of the World of Outlaws family. I grew up with my dad [Hall of Famer and sprint car driver Ron Shuman] on the World of Outlaws Sprint Car tour, and it’s exciting to now be in the midst of planning a season with the World of Outlaws Late Models,” Shuman said. “My career has been heavily open-wheel based, but I am looking forward to the challenge of working with the competitors, owners and promoters in the Late Model world. I am confident with the backing of the World of Outlaws team we can do some really great things.”

Shuman, who will remain involved with the POWRi WAR sprints in an advisory capacity, takes over the reins from Matt Curl, who has become owner of Fairbury American Legion Speedway, the 1/4-mile semi-banked dirt oval home of the World of Outlaws Late Model Series Prairie Dirt Classic.

The 2019 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season kicks off on February 8, at Screven Motorsports Complex in Sylvania, Georgia, before invading Florida and the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park on February 13. Visit worldofoutlaws.com for more information.

South Boston Adds Engine Options For Limited Sportsman Division

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 01/04/2019 - 11:02
South Boston Speedway in South Boston, Virginia, is adding four new engine combinations to its Limited Sportsman Division in 2019. The changes are an effort to give competitors more affordable options as the GM 603 crate engines the class has used for a decade have become outdated.

Any of the four new engine combinations should cost less than $4,000. The engine combination the division has utilized for years will remain an option in 2019, with add-ons to make it competitive with the four new engines.

“With GM not producing the 603-crate engine any longer, it’s only a matter of time before the parts to continue running that engine become obsolete or unaffordable,” South Boston Speedway Head Technical Inspector Jeff Bomar said. “Speedway management has been working on a viable solution for a couple of years to figure out the best avenue going forward for our teams. We all agreed on the four new combinations after talking with multiple engine builders and the teams that run with us.”

The Limited Sportsman engine options for 2019 include:
    •    The GM crate 602 which is almost identical to the current 603 regarding horsepower and torque. The 602 will run a 390 CFM Holley carburetor and a 1" open hole spacer and start at a weight of 3,100 pounds total and 1,400 pounds right-side weight.
    •    The Ford crate 347 JR. The 347 JR and the 603 make almost identical numbers on the dyno. The 347 JR will start the season with a 390 CFM Holley carburetor with no spacer, weighing 3,100 pounds total with 1,400 pounds right-side weight.
    •    The steel-head engines being phased out of the Late Model Stock Car division. To bring the power closer to the GM 603, a 350 CFM Holley carburetor is required with a starting weight of 3,100 pounds total and 1,400 pounds right-side weight.
    •    The GM 604 with a 450 CFM Holley carburetor. The GM 604 will remain on the stock 1.5 ration rocker arms and weigh 3,100 pounds total and 1,420 pounds right-side weight.
    •    The current GM 603 crate engine that teams have been running for a decade. A 1-inch open-hole space will be added to keep current teams from feeling forced to buy a new engine to be competitive during the transition period to the new engine packages.

The 2019 South Boston season opens on March 16 with an afternoon of racing featuring twin 100-lap Late Model races, a 50-lap Limited Sportsman race, a 30-lap Pure Stock race and a 15-lap Hornets race.

Team Penske announced that Jefferson Hodges, who most recently served as General Manager and Director of Competition for Rev Racing, will join the organization as NASCAR Team Manager beginning with the 2019 season.

“Joining an organization like Team Penske is a huge opportunity for me,” Hodges said. “When you look at motorsports organizations, you always find Team Penske right at the top of the list, no matter what type of racing you are talking about. To get an opportunity to work for Roger Penske, Tim Cindric (Team Penske President), Mike Nelson (VP of Operations) and all of the accomplished drivers and crew chiefs is something I’m really looking forward to.”

Team Penske is coming off one of the most successful seasons in its 53-year history, which included seven MENCS and six NXS victories. In 2019, Team Penske will field three full-time MENCS teams with Logano, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney returning as drivers for the three teams. On the heels of their first full season in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS), Thomasville, N.C.-based Rick Ware Racing (RWR), a family-owned operation, has acquired a fleet of race cars from Leavine Family Racing (LFR) and Front Row Motorsports (FRM) respectively.

The team has also acquired a second charter for 2019 which will be branded with the team’s No. 52 number, expanding the organization to a two-car Cup stable next year.

Roush Fenway Halts Xfinity Program For 2019

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 01/03/2019 - 11:24
Roush Fenway Racing (RFR) will not field a car in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for the first time in over 25 years, as confirmed by Team President Steve Newmark on Wednesday during SiriusXM NASCAR Radio’s “Dialed In” show.

RFR will continue to field two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series cars in 2019, which kicks off its season at Daytona Int’l Speedway on February 16. Ryan Newman will drive the No. 6 Ford Mustang, while Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will field the No. 17 Ford Mustang.

“We’re going to focus exclusively on both of those Cup teams (in 2019) and realized we needed to allocate all of our resources there,” Newmark said, speaking with show host Claire B. Lang. “We’ve fluctuated on the number of the teams in the Xfinity Series and a lot of that has been based on need. We’ve been four, we’ve been one, and I think (2019) we’ve decided on how we’re positioned we’ll step out of that for a year and see how that goes and just focus all the resources, all the engineering, all the wind tunnel on making sure that we perform to our expectations at the Cup level.”

Newmark noted sponsorship money was a factor in the decision, stating “There’s no doubt that sponsorship plays a factor in everything that we do. For better or worse, that’s the way NASCAR is structured right now and sponsorship is the lifeblood for the teams. My hope is that at some point in time we continue to evolve to a model that moves a little bit way from that. But that was just a factor.”

Xfinity served as a feeder series for the team to enter the Cup, according to Newark. After considerations, however, Newark noted, “we kind of felt like we had all the pieces of the puzzle in place and so really what we need to do is go out and execute at the Cup level and we’ll see where we end up in Xfinity in the future.”

RFR fielded two full-time cars in the Xfinity Series in 2018.

MAHLE Aftermarket Inc. has announced the 2018 MAHLE Engine Builders of the Year for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series and Xfinity Series. The MAHLE Engine Builder of the Year award is presented to the top engine builder in these NASCAR series who accumulated the most points based on qualifying, laps led and finishing position.

Doug Yates of Roush Yates Engines received the MAHLE Engine Builder of the Year Award for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series (MENCS), which was based on the outstanding performance of Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford.

Yates and Roush Yates Engines also received the MAHLE Engine Builder of the Year Award for the NASCAR Xfinity Series based on the performance of No. 22 Penske Ford Fusion, driven by Austin Cindric, Joey Logano, Paul Menard, Brad Keselowski and Ryan Blaney.

“Receiving the MAHLE Engine Builder of the Year in both series takes great employees, teams, drivers, and suppliers like MAHLE. We look forward to our continued collaboration and innovative products from the employees at MAHLE,” Yates said.
