60-Car Le Mans Entry List Set

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 03/01/2019 - 05:57
The official entry list for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, set for June 15–16, was released today.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans Selection Committee received a record 75 applications from teams eager to take part in this year’s milestone race, where the world champions will be crowned.

To earn a coveted place on the list of 60 entrants and 10 reserves, competitors were assessed on the following criteria: Sporting and technical quality; Spectator and media appeal; Commitment and loyalty to ACO series (such as the Asian Le Mans Series and the European Le Mans Series).

Leading the entry list are the reigning champions Toyota Gazoo Racing with a pair TS050 Hybrids led by Sebastian Buemi, Kazuki Nakajimaand Fernando Alonso. The second Toyota will be handled by Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Marie Lopez.

Those are two of the eight LMP1 entries with Rebellion Racing and SMP Racing each fielding a pair of cars while single entries are included from Bykolles Racing Team and DragonSpeed.

Eight teams from the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship were selected to compete in the twice-around-the-clock classic.

Two Chevrolet Corvette C7.Rs for Corvette Racing will be piloted by the same driver lineups that took on the Rolex 24 At Daytona back in January. In the No. 63, two-time defending WeatherTech Championship GTLM champions Jan Magnussen and Antonio Garcia will compete alongside Mike Rockenfeller. The No. 64 will be co-driven by Oliver Gavin and Tommy Milner, the 2016 GTLM champions, and Marcel Fassler.

Ford Chip Ganassi Racing will field a four-car effort in the 24 Hours of Le Mans, two from its WeatherTech Championship program and two from its U.K. program. Joey Hand, Dirk Mueller and Sebastien Bourdais will co-drive the No. 68, while Ryan Briscoe, Richard Westbrook and Scott Dixon will run in the No. 69. Both trios contested the Rolex 24.

The Porsche GT Team also returns to Le Mans with four Porsche 911 RSRs. The WeatherTech Championship contingent will be Patrick Pilet, Nick Tandy and Earl Bamber in the No. 93 Porsche, and Sven Muller, Mathieu Jaminet and Dennis Olsen slated in the No. 94.

“It’s an honor to race at Le Mans and it’s an honor we don’t take for granted,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We can’t wait to get there this year with some special things planned, as well as having our first customer team on the grid with us.”

That customer team will be driven by Ben Keating and Jeroen Bleekemolen, who are looking to improve on their third-place finish in GTE Am in 2018. They will be co-driving the No. 85 Keating Motorsports Ford GT with Felipe Fraga.

“Le Mans in 2019 is very different for me than it has been over the past four years,” said Keating. “As a third generation Ford Dealer, I have a deep history with Ford. Additionally, Ford’s history at Le Mans is well known and documented.

“It is so meaningful to be the first team to represent Ford in the GTE Am class at Le Mans. I am honored to have this opportunity. 1969 was the last win for previous generation of the Ford GT40. This is significant for me. We have the opportunity to compete exactly 50 years later, and I hope to achieve the same result.”

GTE Am is also home to WeatherTech Racing. Cooper MacNeil, winner of the 2018 Motul Petit Le Mans and the 2018 Ferrari Challenge North America championship, is currently the only driver listed for WeatherTech Racing’s No. 62 Ferrari 488 GTE entry.

“We are looking forward to running at Le Mans again in June,” MacNeil said. “Going back with our own program, our own car, and with Scuderia Corsa gives us all of the right tools to compete for a win. It takes perfect execution, zero penalties, and a bit of luck to be in the hunt at the end of the 24 Hours of Le Mans.”

A handful of 2019 Rolex 24 At Daytona winners will go for their second twice-around-the-clock win of the year.

In the LMP1 category, Renger van der Zande, Fernando Alonso and Kamui Kobayashi, who together won overall at Daytona with Wayne Taylor Racing alongside Jordan Taylor, will face off in three different LMP1 cars at Le Mans.

Roberto Gonzalez and Pastor Maldonado, two of the four LMP2 winners at the Rolex 24, will return with the Rolex 24-winning Dragonspeed team in the same category. In the GTE Pro class, Augusto Farfus—winner in the GTLM class at Daytona—returns with BMW and BMW Team MTEK.

Another full-time WeatherTech Championship team, Meyer Shank Racing, is one of 10 reserve teams on the entry list with its No. 44 ORECA LMP2.

Increaed Payouts For OCFS Competitors

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 03/01/2019 - 05:43
For its historic 100th anniversary season, Orange County Fair Speedway, located in Middletown, New York, is offering one of northeast dirt racing’s most robust purse structures.

For years, OCFS has already offered some of the sport’s largest purses, but its new managing body—Orange Motorsports and Entertainment—felt that the 100-year-old speedway’s dedicated competitors deserved more this year.

Northeast dirt racing’s headlining division, Big Block Modifieds, will now make $3300 to win at weekly events, a significant increase from last year’s season. The 358 Small Block Modified class, the highest support class at OCFS, will go to $2000 to win weekly events.

Sportsman will go to $1000 to win weekly events, while Street Stocks—the only full-bodied car class at OCFS—will race in $500-to-win weekly events.

A special new bonus structure has also been put in place designed to reward hard chargers. Every week, a hard charger in their division will be awarded a $250 bonus.

In addition to the hard charger award, there will also be bonuses for drivers who win from further back in the field. This new bonus structure states that wins from 10th to 15th place will receive a 10 percent bonus, wins from 16th to 20th place will receive a 15 percent bonus and wins from 20th place and beyond will receive a 20 percent bonus.

Drivers will also receive a larger check for their season points finish, with the big-block modified champion receiving an unprecedented $40,000. The points fund has not only increased for big blocks, but small blocks ($15,000 to the champion), sportsman ($5000 to the champion) and street stocks ($2,00 to the champion) as well.

On top of their new weekly purse structure, OCFS has also announced a handful of special events with their own impressive purse structures.

The April 13 season opener will pay $7100 to the big-block modified winner in honor of OCFS legend Carl “Fuzzy” Van Horn, who famously piloted the No. 71e car.

The May 11 The Devil Made Us Do It 666, July 18 Battle of the Midway 100 and Tony Stewart’s All-Star Circuit of Champions event on July 13 will all feature special higher purses as well.

Meanwhile, the August 15–17 Centennial Race Weekend will pay out $100,000 to the winner.

The Big Picture

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 03/01/2019 - 04:57
It’s been a few decades, but as a youngster I really enjoyed working through a good jigsaw puzzle.

Didn’t even matter what the image was, there was just something about fitting all those little pieces together to form a nice, clear picture that struck a chord.

One minute you’re sitting in front of a table full of scattered, seemingly unrelated parts… and then a short time later you’ve created a fully formed likeness of a castle, or a painting, or Jimi Hendrix.

Which got me to thinking about the latest edition of PRI Magazine’s annual Racing Business Survey, the results of which are presented beginning on page 44.

In fact, the process we used to solicit input, gather information, make sense of that information and then arrive at our conclusions was not unlike that of assembling our beloved jigsaw puzzle.

For this exercise, however, we started with about 30 questions and received feedback from nearly 600 respondents from all across the US. Our queries ranged from basic nuts and bolts (“Where is your company located?” “What is your primary business?”) to deeper dives into sales, marketing, online operations and more.

The goal, again, was to form a clear picture of the current motorsports retail scene based on a thoughtful collection and piecing together of reliable data.

Some of our findings were to be expected. For example, racing retailers’ two biggest markets, according to our respondents, are street/strip and drag racing. The next largest—stock cars—came in a distant third, with modifieds and road racers rounding out the top five. Really not much different than recent years’ tallies.

And when it comes to their biggest business challenge, the stories we’ve been hearing from speed shop owners, engine builders, fabricators, race teams and tuners over the last 12 months were confirmed in our survey: that the shortage of skilled labor is still very much a concern. So no real surprise there, either.

But then things started to get interesting. For example, we learned that some 90 percent of retail businesses in 2018 either grew or maintained their sales volume from the previous year; and another 95 percent expect increased or steady sales in 2019.

We also discovered that nearly half of all responding businesses actually buy product online for re-sale; ironically, though, only 15 percent of those same businesses told us that customers typically place orders through their companies’ websites.

In terms of marketing and promotion, there’s still no substitute for word of mouth. But social media has now vaulted ahead of sponsorships and websites as racing businesses’ second most effective method for raising awareness of their products and services. And speaking of websites, these days only half the companies we surveyed even have one for their business; of those that don’t, most said they either lack the time, budget or computer skills needed, or simply don’t see the value in it.

Additional information revealed how often racing businesses visit their local tracks; where they ship products; the benefits they offer employees; and much more.

So I invite you to have a look at our exclusive report—with informative charts and graphs, and some great insight by contributor Jeff Zurschmeide—to see where the motorsports industry stands, how your business measures up, and how exactly it fits into today’s big picture.

Saleen Returns To Auto Racing With Launch Of Saleen Cup Series

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 03/01/2019 - 04:14
A new single-make series designed to showcase one of the world’s newest turbocharged mid-engine sports cars has just been revealed.

California-based Saleen Automotive has announced it will host the Saleen Cup, a five-event, “arrive-and-drive” race series designed to demonstrate the capabilities of its recently announced Saleen 1 sports car.

The Saleen Cup is being presented via a partnership with SRO Motorsports Group, and will run concurrently with the Blancpain GT World Challenge America. The single-make series invites drivers to be among the first in the world to experience the Saleen 1 on five iconic race tracks throughout the US.

As the first-ever professional quality “arrive-and-drive” series, the five events will be supported by 20 track-ready cars maintained, prepped and transported to race venues by Saleen—offering prospective drivers and enthusiasts a turnkey racing opportunity—and a chance to win a factory seat in Saleen’s GT4 entry throughout the 2020 season.

Gabriele Cadringher recently joined Saleen as director of motorsports and will lead the Saleen Cup. The former technical director and consultant for FIA and Grand-Am will use the five-race events to further hone the track capabilities of the Saleen 1.

The Saleen Cup will consist of five racings scheduled for the second half of the Blancpain GT World Challenge America, and kicks off at Sonoma Raceway in California Wine Country in June. Drivers who are able to compete in the five races through October 20 are now being actively recruited.

More information on the Saleen Cup is available at www.SaleenCup.com.

Reports: F1 US Grand Prix A Go For 2019 Despite Funding Snag

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 03/01/2019 - 04:03
Despite an anticipated $25 million state funding shortfall, the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) in Austin, Texas, is expected to move forward with plans to host this year’s Formula 1 US Grand Prix.

The funding snafu stemmed from the state of Texas rejecting the circuit’s application for $25.8 in subsidies because it failed to include a plan to prevent human trafficking, as required by law. However, because the reimbursements happen months after each race—and fees paid to Formula 1 do not hinge on COTA receiving state funds—the 2019 event will not be affected, according to reports.

COTA has reportedly appealed the decision, citing discrepancies in the state’s ruling and a preliminary approval that failed to address the human trafficking plan (or lack thereof). And the racing facility and state appear to agree on the value of the event to both the local and regional economy.

"The governor's office has no desire to see the race go away," said COTA co-owner Bobby Epstein "They recognize it has value."

Bottom line is that even despite the confusion—and a potentially significant funding hole for COTA in 2019—officials remain optimistic over the future of F1 in Texas. "I think this year's race and future races should be OK,” Epstein added.
