All-Star Lineup Announced For Engine Builders Forum At PRI Trade Show

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 08/29/2013 - 11:29
An all-star panel of top race engine builders will share the stage for a special roundtable forum and Q&A on how to operate a successful race engine business at this year’s Performance Racing Industry Trade Show in Indianapolis, Indiana.

This exciting event, which takes place from 8 to 9 a.m. on Friday, December 13, 2013, at the Indiana Convention Center, provides rare access to four leading engine builders from across the country covering a range of motorsports disciplines, including asphalt, dirt, off-road and drag racing. In this “Ask The Experts” forum, panelists will share experiences and answer questions submitted by Trade Show attendees, as well as from PRI readers and social media followers.

Scheduled to appear on this year’s panel are Keith Dorton of Automotive Specialists, Vic Hill from Vic Hill Race Engines LLC, Jon Kaase with Jon Kaase Racing Engines, and Ron Shaver of Shaver Racing Engines.

“PRI is bringing together four of the racing industry’s truly elite engine builders for their unique perspectives on running a successful race engine business,” said Dan Schechner, editor at PRI and scheduled moderator of the event. “We’re inviting fellow engine builders, race teams, crew members and more to hear firsthand keys to success and advice straight from the experts. Whether you’re into stock car, sprint car, midget, modified, dirt late model or drag racing, these four industry superstars will no doubt leave a lasting impression on your approach to both business and racing.”

With theater-style seating for 200, PRI’s engine builders forum will be held in the Convention Center’s Meeting Rooms 231-232, just prior to the show floor opening for day two of the three-day PRI Trade Show.

There is no charge for registered Trade Show attendees, and seating will be arranged on a first-come, first served basis.

An iconic figure among American race engine builders, Keith Dorton began his professional apprenticeship in the early 1960s, working in the engine shop of the legendary Holman-Moody Racing. Soon after he opened Automotive Specialists in Concord, North Carolina, where his very first customer was Ralph Earnhardt, patriarch of the famous Earnhardt racing family. Over the next five decades, Dorton would go on to develop and prepare winning engines in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Truck Series, the USAR Pro Cup Series, the ASA and many more.

In addition, Automotive Specialists through the years has partnered with manufacturers such as Holley, Edelbrock and Fel-Pro Gaskets, as well as the US Department of Energy, on various development programs.

More recently Dorton has entered the world of land speed racing, particularly at the world-famous Bonneville Salt Flats, where Automotive Specialists-powered cars have broken numerous SCTA records.

In 2012, Dorton was inducted into SEMA’s prestigious Motorsports Parts Manufacturers Council (MPMC) Hall of Fame.

At the age of 18, Vic Hill boldly walked into the shop of Richard Childress Racing in North Carolina and asked for a job. He hasn’t looked back since.

The man nicknamed “The Thrill” spent a decade in the Winston Cup Series, working with NASCAR legends Cale Yarborough, Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Richard Petty, among others, before returning to Tennessee in the early 1990s. Soon after he became a regular late model winner at area tracks including Volunteer Speedway, dubbed “The World’s Fastest Dirt Track,” and would go on to win five Track Championships there (in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2005 and 2009).

Founded in 2000, Vic Hill Race Engines in Mosheim, Tennessee, handles its own cylinder head development and manifold design in-house. In the dirt late model market, the company is perhaps best known for having developed the first 4.500 wide bore spacing engines back in 2006, along with car owner Bob Miller and driver Scott Bloomquist. In 2013 alone, Hill’s engines have recorded dozens of wins at short tracks throughout the region.

After earning a degree in mechanical engineering, Jon Kaase created race engines that won a dozen Pro Stock championships, succeeded in winning the Engine Masters Challenge four times, and has presided over the company that bears his name for almost 34 years.

In 1977 he began working for Dyno Don Nicholson in Atlanta, Georgia, and by year’s end Kaase had claimed the NHRA Pro Stock title. Two years later he formed his own company, Jon Kaase Racing Engines, which subsequently relocated to Winder, Georgia, where remains to this day.

In recent years the firm has expanded into the hot rod market, introducing the Kaase Boss Nine—a high performance engine series developed from Ford’s big-block 385-series and equipped with hemi heads—in 2007, followed a few years later by the P-38, a new high performance small-block series based on the Ford Windsor engine. Both engine series remain strong sellers in the US and Australasian markets.

Over the past 40 years, Ron Shaver has been the leading power plant builder for many of the championship winning teams in the World Of Outlaws, Allstars, NARC, CRA, SCRA, NCRA, USAC, NHRA, and SCORE series.

Shaver began engine development for his first sprint car engine built for Tom Hunt of Hunt Magnetos in 1976, and later Dean Thompson and Bruce Bromme. R&D efforts were enhanced with the addition of a Heenan-Froude dynamometer and through a collection of some of the industry's most accomplished technical staff.

Shaver Racing Engines compiled over 30 open wheel championships through the 1980s and ’90s, and in the 21st century it has grown into one of the premier race engine builders, with some of the industry’s most advanced equipment and testing facilities. Prestigious race victories include the Knoxville Nationals, King's Royal, The World 100, The Gold Cup, and The DIRT Cup, among many others.

This year, more than 40,000 motorsports professionals from across the US and 70-plus countries will join over 1100 exhibiting companies for the 26th Annual PRI Show, which returns to the Racing Capital of the World, Indianapolis.

NHRA has announced its 2014 Mello Yello Drag Racing Series schedule, which includes a return to racing Memorial Day weekend with the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, May 23-25.

Also in 2014, NHRA will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the biggest and most prestigious event in all of NHRA Drag Racing, the Chevrolet Performance US Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Labor Day weekend, Aug. 27-Sept. 1. Another tradition-rich event will celebrate its 50th anniversary: the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. That race will again provide the stage for the season finale, Nov. 13-16. NHRA will be announcing activities, events, and promotions for both milestone anniversary races that will make each one a must-attend event for NHRA fans.

The 24-race NHRA Mello Yello Series will make its traditional stops across the country and remains the most geographically dispersed US touring series in all of motorsports, reaching fans with its unique brand of high-horsepower entertainment from New England to California, Washington to Florida, and all points between.

The 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series kicks off with the NHRA Winternationals at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona, Feb. 6-9. It was also announced that the event will move to a more traditional three-day format for Mello Yello Series competitors, featuring two qualifying runs Friday and Saturday, followed by eliminations Sunday. The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will begin racing Thursday, Feb. 6.

Following the season opener, the series returns to Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park (formerly Firebird Int’l Raceway) near Phoenix for the 30th annual NHRA Arizona Nationals, Feb. 21-23. NHRA teams will traverse the country to make it to the traditional East Coast opener at Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville for the 45th annual Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals, March 13-16.

Three traditional stops will follow: the SummitRacing.com NHRA Nationals at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway (March 28-30), the popular NHRA Four-Wide Nationals at zMAX Dragway in Charlotte (April 11-13), and the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA SpringNationals at Royal Purple Raceway near Houston (April 25-27).

In May, the teams will embark on a grueling stretch of events during the summer months that includes 11 races in 14 weeks, beginning with the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in Atlanta, May 16-18. The NHRA Mello Yello Series returns to racing Memorial Day weekend with the NHRA Kansas Nationals at Heartland Park Topeka, May 23-25, followed by the last of a three-in-a-row stretch, the 45th annual Toyota NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown (May 29-June 1).

After a week off, the NHRA Mello Yello Series will race four in a row, at the Ford NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals in Bristol (June 13-15), the Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals (June 19-22) in Epping, the O’Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway outside Chicago (June 26-29), and a Fourth of July weekend celebration at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals at Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk (July 3-6).

The famed Western Swing kicks off with the 35th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA Nationals at Bandimere Speedway in Denver, July 18-20. From there, the teams will trek farther west, stopping at Sonoma Raceway in the Bay Area of Northern California for the NHRA Sonoma Nationals (July 25-27) before finishing the Western Swing at Pacific Raceways near Seattle with the O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals (Aug. 1-3). NHRA teams will then head to Brainerd for the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, Aug. 14-17.

The last race in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series regular season, where the final positions for the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship will be secured, will be the prestigious Chevrolet Performance US Nationals at Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Labor Day weekend, Aug. 27-Sept. 1. Adding to the pressure that the teams and drivers experience that weekend will be the NHRA Traxxas Nitro Shootout for Top Fuel and Funny Car. The special races-within-a-race bonus event features the best of the best in both categories vying for $100,000 winners’ checks.

The six-race 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, NHRA’s playoffs, kicks off two weeks later with four consecutive weeks of racing: the NHRA Carolina Nationals in Charlotte (Sept. 12-14), the AAA Texas NHRA FallNationals at Texas Motorplex near Dallas (Sept. 18-21), the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis (Sept. 26-28), and the 30th annual Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading (Oct. 2-5).

The season concludes out west with the NHRA Toyota Nationals in Las Vegas (Oct. 30-Nov. 2) and returns to where it all began for the season finale with the 50th anniversary of the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals (Nov. 13-16). Like the Winternationals, the Auto Club NHRA Finals will be a three-day race for the Mello Yello Series teams with two qualifying sessions each Friday and Saturday and final eliminations Sunday. Besides featuring the conclusion to the season and the crowning of champions in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle, the event at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona will include a huge 50th anniversary celebration. Details regarding special events, activities, and promotions will be announced later.

The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will compete in a 16-race schedule, with six of those races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

ESPN2 and ESPN2HD, a part of the ESPN network, the worldwide leader in sports, will again provide exclusive television coverage on a same-day basis of all NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series events featuring action from qualifying rounds Saturday and eliminations Sunday.

SCCA Runoffs Entry List For 2013 Approaching Record Numbers

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 08/28/2013 - 11:58
Two major attendance records are being threatened for the 50th SCCA National Championship Runoffs, Sept. 16-22 at Road America, as marks for both the total starters for an event and the total starters for one class are within reach.

The 50th celebration of the event currently has 717 drivers on the entry list to compete in 28 classes. The current record saw 709 cars take a green flag at the 2004 Runoffs, held at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course.

Included in that count are five open-wheel classes and 10 sedan classes that currently feature over 20 cars each. Also under assault is the record for most starters in a race. A whopping 60 cars started the Spec Miata race at the 2010 Runoffs, and three classes are in range of that milestone for 2013.

Currently, 71 cars are on the Spec Miata entry list, including three former class National Champions. Spec Racer Ford, which is second all-time with 58 cars in 1993, currently has 54 cars on the entry list. Four of those drivers have already claimed at least one SRF crown. Formula Vee has 50 cars on the entry list, with an extraordinary eight of those drivers holding gold medals in the class.

In addition to the thrill of joining a prestigious group of SCCA National Champions, the 2013 entry list is boosted by the 50th running of the prestigious event, a champions provisional extended to past SCCA National Champions, and the conclusion of a five-year run at Road America. Beginning in 2014, the event will travel to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, Daytona International Speedway and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in successive years.

The 50th SCCA National Championship Runoffs begins at Road America on Monday, September 16, with practice for all 28 classes. Qualifying takes place Tuesday through Thursday, with a National Champion crowned in 28 class races on Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22. The SCCA National Championship Runoffs has crowned Club Racing National Champions in a winner-take-all, single race format since 1964.

More information on the SCCA National Championship Runoffs can be found at SCCA.com/Runoffs.

Harry Scott, Jr. Reaches Agreement To Purchase Phoenix Racing

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 08/28/2013 - 04:31
Harry Scott, Jr. has come to a definitive agreement with James Finch to purchase Phoenix Racing.

Scott will formally take over control of the team as its owner on September 10, 2013, with Justin Allgaier behind the wheel of the No. 51 Chevrolet in time for the Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.

"This is a very proud day for me as I will have the opportunity to compete against the best teams in motorsports in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series as the owner of Phoenix Racing," said Scott. "I am going to build a championship contender with hard work, the right people and the right partners. This team has a great foundation thanks to the efforts of James Finch. There is a lot to build upon and I am looking forward to getting started."

Scott's role as a co-owner in Turner Scott Motorsports (TSM) is unchanged, and he will continue to take an active role in that team on and off the track.

Driver Justin Allgaier is making the move with Scott from TSM to Phoenix Racing and will be the team's driver in the No. 51 Chevrolet for its debut at Chicagoland Speedway on September 15 and two additional races this year. Allgaier, who is currently 5th in points in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS), will continue his pursuit of a championship in that series for TSM.

"I'm thrilled for the opportunity and grateful to Mr. Scott that he's asked me to drive for him in the No. 51. Chevrolet. I love competing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series but I must admit that making my debut in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be a special day for me," said Allgaier.

Scott has signed a deal with Brandt to be the primary sponsor of the No. 51 for three NSCS races this season. Brandt, which also sponsors Allgaier in the NNS for Turner Scott Motorsports, will be the primary sponsor of the No. 51 at Chicagoland, Charlotte Motor Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. Allgaier will be the driver for each of those races.

"We are celebrating the company's 60th Anniversary and so this move to the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is made even more special because we are debuting at our home track at Chicagoland," said Brandt CEO Rick Brandt.

Phoenix Racing, which was established in 1989, has one win, four Top Fives and 15 Top 20 finishes. The one win was the memorable 2009 victory at Talladega's Aaron's 499 with Brad Keselowski behind the wheel.

Scott has committed to keeping the Phoenix Racing team intact for the remainder of the season. Allgaier's crew chief will be Nick Harrison. Harrison is a third year crew chief and has worked with several drivers including Kurt Busch, Landon Cassill and A.J. Allmendinger.

Phoenix Racing's general manager, Steve Barkdoll, will continue in his role after Scott takes over.

The team will continue its relationships and alliances with Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports and Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

Scott is working with NASCAR for final approval.

BVR Running Three Top Fuel Dragsters in Indy

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 08/27/2013 - 11:07
Bob Vandergriff Racing will again have three Top Fuel dragsters competing in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series this weekend at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals.

J.R. Todd will be piloting the third entry sponsored by Total Equipment & Service, a subsidiary of C&J Energy Services. Valvoline and All Star Performance will be associate sponsors on the dragster.

“We’re excited to have J.R. Todd back on the track. Our goal at BVR is to get that car on the track as many times as possible to help our other two teams and to give J.R. Todd as much seat time as we can,” said Bob Vandergriff Jr. “Mike Guger will once again take over duties as the crew chief for J.R.'s team, and with the positive results we saw from the Indy test session, we're expecting big things from that car during the U.S. Nationals.”

Todd last drove the Total Equipment & Service dragster in Houston at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA SpringNationals presented by Super Start Batteries. Todd also filled in for Brandon Bernstein at several races this season while Bernstein recovered from back surgery.

Vandergriff added, “I'd like to thank Barry Beadle from Total Equipment for their support of this team, Valvoline for getting behind this program as they are becoming a very integral part of BVR, C&J Energy Services both on and off the track, and Doug Lane at All Star Performance for jumping onboard again and supporting our program for the U.S. Nationals.”
