Ford To Debut New EcoBoost Race Engine At 2014 Rolex 24 At Daytona

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 10/02/2013 - 03:52
As part of its continuing strategy to introduce product-relevant technology into racing, Ford announced plans to bring its 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost racing engine to the 2014 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship series.

The new engine, which will debut at the 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona on Jan. 25-26 and run the entire 12-race season, will power a new-look Daytona Prototype car, created with Ford corporate design influence. Michael Shank Racing is on board as the first team to put EcoBoost power behind its DP car.

“At Ford Racing, we really put great emphasis on racing production-based vehicles as well as production-based technologies,” said Jamie Allison, director, Ford Racing. “We’re proud to bring a direct-injected, twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost engine to the United SportsCar Championship in a field of competitive V8-powered entries. We want to show Ford EcoBoost’s capabilities as an engine that provides both performance and fuel economy, on and off the track.”

“This engine is the future,” added Doug Yates, CEO, Roush Yates Racing Engines. “This Ford EcoBoost engine includes all the newest technologies – direct injection, turbocharging and high efficiency. We’re looking at taking it to the next level through this sports car racing program.”

A new Ford-inspired Riley Technologies Daytona Prototype car will accompany the 3.5-liter V6 EcoBoost in Daytona. The car’s body features enhanced Ford production vehicle design cues created by lead Ford production designer Garen Nicoghosian with aerodynamic support from Ford Racing chief aerodynamicist Bernie Marcus.

“Ford Motor Company has taken today’s Daytona Prototype and injected into it unique Ford attributes and unique Ford design characteristics,” Allison explained. “This EcoBoost-powered car is obviously adapted for racing applications with racing controls, but ultimately we’re running what we’re selling and selling what we’re running.”

While the new engine will make its competitive racing debut at the highly anticipated 2014 Rolex 24 at Daytona, it will actually hit the Daytona track for the first time Oct. 9.

In a joint effort between Michael Shank Racing, Ford Racing and Continental Tire, the 2012 Rolex 24 at Daytona championship team will aim to set a new track record at the “World Center of Speed” by eclipsing the 210.364 mph lap laid down Feb. 9, 1987, by NASCAR champion Bill Elliott, who pushed his Ford Thunderbird to the top of the speed charts in qualifying for the Daytona 500.

“It’s really a privilege to have an opportunity to put your name in the record books like this,” said team owner Mike Shank. “It is almost inconceivable that this record has stood for such a long time, so it’s pretty special to be involved. We worked a long time to develop our relationship with Ford to be in a position to take on projects like this. Anytime you can get in the record books, it is a great opportunity and just builds on what this company has done.”

“Ford Motor Company stands for innovation and leading-edge technology, so having a chance to debut our Ford EcoBoost technology in a high-visibility setting such as this record run attempt, as well as the entire 2014 USCC schedule with its iconic races, is great,” Allison said. “Through USCC racing and its fan outreach, we want to showcase how EcoBoost technology presents the combined benefits of performance and fuel efficiency – something all consumers would want in their vehicles.”

Weather permitting, Michael Shank Racing will take to the track at 8 a.m. Oct. 9, to start building up speed for the record attempt.

To prepare for the record run and upcoming season, the EcoBoost engine has recently undergone endurance testing at Ford’s Dynamometer Lab in Dearborn, Michigan, specifically at the specialized 17G cell. Production and racing engineers from Ford and specialists from Roush Yates Racing Engines have collaborated to ensure the engine is ready for the upcoming season.

“The key about this dyno cell is that it’s dedicated to motorsports, but it’s within Ford’s dynamometer facility,” says David Simon, Ford Racing engine engineer. “We can do full vehicle simulation in racing conditions, in a way some of our other cells aren’t capable of doing. It’s very, very specific to high-performance racing engine programs.”

Race fans can follow the progression of the record run attempt on Ford Racing’s Twitter channel (@FordRacing) and Facebook page throughout the day.

Mazak Opens Doors To Students at Mfg the Nxt Genr8n

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 10/02/2013 - 03:39
As part of its ongoing commitment to keeping US manufacturing strong, machine tool company Mazak Corporation will open its factory and technology center doors to well over 200 area students during its Mfg the Nxt Genr8n event. The one-day event will help promote and generate interest in manufacturing as a viable and lucrative career path and show students that the products used in everyday life—from airplanes to laptops and surgical knee implants to washing machines—all originate from today’s high-tech factories.

Scheduled for October 7, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, the event centers around tours of Mazak’s Florence, Kentucky, production facility and its National Technology Center and Center for Multi-Tasking and Manufacturing Excellence. Mfg the Nxt Genr8n also kicks off Mazak’s huge DISCOVER 2013 technology and education event—starting the same week—that will host thousands of manufacturers from across North America from October 8 – 16 in Florence, KY.

Several high schools from Kenton and Boone county school districts, along with Gateway Community and Technical College and Cincinnati State College, will have students attending Mfg the Nxt Genr8n. During the event, visiting students will experience, up close, a modern working factory, as well as some of the industry’s most advanced, computerized and sophisticated machines and automation in action.

“The fact is that US manufacturing is constantly being underrated and under supported and, as a result, is in dire need of skilled labor,” explained Brian Papke, president of Mazak Corp. “The problem is real and won’t improve until we work together to change the impressions young people have about manufacturing. We also need to aggressively market the fact that careers in manufacturing are both lucrative and respectable. At Mazak, we continuously work to manufacture the next generation of skilled labor, and our strategies include hosting events such as Mfg the Nxt Genr8n in conjunction with working closely with the local technical schools and maintaining our own long-established Mazak apprentice program.”

To complement the factory tours, students will have ample opportunity to interact with some of Mazak’s current apprentices, as well as with a group of young applications engineers Mazak recently hired from local area technical training programs. Officials from the Association for Manufacturing Technology (AMT) and Gateway Community and Technical College will also be on hand to field questions and talk to students about preparing early for careers in manufacturing as part of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs.

Monticello Motor Club Kicks Off Major Expansion

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 05:16
Monticello Motor Club in Monticello, New York, plans to expand beyond its existing 4.1 mile racetrack, clubhouse, private garages, and service center. Its plan makes full use of the 670 breathtaking acres in the Catskill Mountains. At the end of ten years, it will be looking at a much-expanded Monticello Motor Club (MMC). The priority and acceleration of projects will be determined by member utilization, demand, and volume, but the plans include the following projects:

Up to 70 autominiums will be available to club members for long-term lease. Each will have a ground-floor garage, an attached second-floor condo overlooking the track, and a deck roof with a 360° view, as well as use of a pool and cabana.

MMC will add up to 200 private garages, including a two-story garage with a timing tower that overlooks new pits and racing paddocks designed to support professional races.

A new member clubhouse, roughly twice the size of the existing facility, will include expanded dining areas and catering facilities, locker rooms, a larger pro-shop, and spa services. The clubhouse will also have a timing tower overlooking the north pits and attached garages for day use.

New access roads and trolley paths will allow members and guests the ability to reach a variety of natural viewing areas.

A 2.5-mile off-road course will be available for year-round use. And snow- and ice-making equipment around the Mushroom Course will provide MMC with the ability to offer winter driving training and experiences from January through mid-March.

As a first step, MMC is working on five expansion projects between now and next season. Its first project is already under construction—a new, permanent karting track located inside the track along the North Straight. A project often requested by MMC members and their families, this karting track will feature a one kilometer (.6 mile) asphalt ribbon, 30 feet of total elevation changes, and a family-friendly karting clubhouse. The track is also designed to support autocross exercises. MMC hopes to be driving the rough course by late October and to complete the race-grade final coat and curbing in April, just before it opens for the 2014 season.

Second, the facility will build a bridge across the track with two lanes for vehicles as large as tractor-trailers and a separate pedestrian lane. The foundation will be complete in November, and the bridge will be ready before our 2014 season kickoff. Accessing private garages, fuel pumps, MMC's service center, and private race shops will be easier than ever.

Third, additional garage buildings will be completed over the winter, with both single-and double-deep bays and private storage options for 1-8 cars. Two well-known race shops—Speedsport Tuning and DeMan Motorsport—already maintain a dependable, on-site presence for Porsche enthusiasts. In 2014, both will expand their support for members and guests with new satellite facilities at the track.

Fourth, MMC is putting the finishing touches on a 2.5 mile off-road course design and expect to be driving this new course by the start of next season and through the 2014-5 winter. A fleet of off-road vehicles will be available for members and their guests.

Finally, the club intends to start the first autominium buildings, capable of supporting up to 6 living units in each building.

As MMC approaches 300 members, it's entering a new stage of growth and excitement. With individual membership options starting at $40,000 (one-time fee) and annual dues starting at less than $3500, there's a membership right for most. The facility also has memberships designed for families and businesses. To learn more, visit www.monticellomotorclub.com.

Frank Bolter Hired At Kyle Busch Motorsports

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 04:44
Kyle Busch Motorsports (KBM) announced that Frank Bolter was recently hired as the director of business development. Bolter reports directly to team owner Kyle Busch and oversees all of KBM’s sales and marketing efforts.

Bolter most notably was owner of Corporate Image, a full-service design and graphic provider for the motorsports industry, from 1995 to 2007 before selling the company to Motorsports Designs. In addition to his role at KBM, the Alabama native is currently a partner in Charlotte-based Lead 2 Real Estate Group. He previously served as a business consultant for Billy Ballew Motorsports NASCAR Camping World Truck Series team from 2005 to 2010 and Jason Meyers Elite Racing World of Outlaws Sprint Car operation in 2009. The 40-year-old has held the position of spotter for a variety of motorsports teams, working in recent years for many notable teams, including Andretti Autosport, Chip Ganassi Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing.

“Frank has been around motorsports in a variety of roles over the years and will be an asset to KBM,” Busch said. “He brings a fresh perspective to the table and isn’t afraid to think outside of the box. With the business side of our sport getting to be just as competitive as the competition on the track, as a company you need to come up with ways to separate yourselves from the other teams and we’re confident that with the staff we have in place working under Frank’s direction we will be able to continue to do that.

“In his dual role as general manager and director of competition, Rick Ren has done a really nice job of building our company to where this season we have four full-time teams running out of our building,” Busch continued. “As we have grown the last few years, we’ve reached a point where Rick is getting pulled in too many directions and we felt like it was a good time to bring Frank onboard to oversee things on the business side. This move has allowed Rick to put his focus on the competition side, where he has been able to help further the development of the lineup of young drivers we have at KBM and he also has been able to work directly with Toyota on building the 2014 Tundra that we unveiled a few weeks ago in Chicago.”

Ren has helped mold KBM into one of the most successful teams in all of NASCAR. In 2010, the team’s flagship No. 18 Tundra led the series with eight wins en route to becoming the first team since the Truck Series originated in 1995 to win an Owner’s Championship in its inaugural season. To date in four seasons of competition, KBM has collected 22 Truck Series victories and one Nationwide Series win.

Mazak DISCOVER 2013 Event To Shape Future Of Manufacturing Efficiency In Motorsports

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/01/2013 - 04:18
Companies seeking new technology, advanced manufacturing solutions and valuable industry insight to increase their production efficiency and global competitiveness must attend Mazak Corporation’s DISCOVER 2013 event, taking place October 8–16, 2013 in Florence, Kentucky.

According to Mazak, DISCOVER 2013 will be the largest private manufacturing event in North America this year, providing attendees with everything they need to run a highly productive, quality-driven manufacturing business today and well into the future.

To kick off DISCOVER 2013, there will be a special pre-event on October 7, focused on the future of US manufacturing and promoting careers within the industry. Local-area students and their parents will be invited to tour Mazak’s Production-On-Demand Manufacturing Plant to get an up close look at advanced manufacturing equipment in a real-world scenario. But most importantly, they will learn that work in today’s manufacturing environment is safe, sophisticated, high-tech and lucrative.

For manufacturers, DISCOVER 2013 will offer technical seminars and industry-specific metalworking demonstrations together with a wide array of new machine models. Technical seminars will encompass a wide variety of manufacturing topics and practical solutions presented by industry experts, key Mazak Value Inspired Partner (VIP) companies and other manufacturing suppliers. Intelligence Zones will allow small groups of 10 attendees to receive very specific knowledge on wide ranging topics.

Attendees will learn how to properly implement the latest technologies and processes, as well as how to improve part quality, shorten lead times, reduce operational costs and achieve the lowest cost of ownership. Plus, the event will feature real-time production data monitoring demonstrations inside Mazak’s manufacturing plant using the MTConnect protocol. The focus will be on how companies can improve machine utilization using machine tool monitoring software to measure real time factory performance.

Furthermore, attendees will experience Mazak’s continued investment in and improvement of its three core business structures—the North American Manufacturing Plant, National Technology Center and Center for Multi-Tasking and Manufacturing Excellence and the North American Parts Center—that are the foundation of its Kentucky campus.

Currently, Mazak is in the process of expanding its manufacturing facility by adding 200,000 square feet of floor space to the Mazak campus. When the expansion is complete in early 2014, the company will be able to produce between 170 and 200 machine tool units per month, depending on product mix.

As a special focus, Mazak will invite event attendees to see some of the new, highly advanced machines that will be key to the plant expansion and will further enhance the company’s Production-On-Demand approach to building machine tools. These highly automated Multi-Tasking machines will provide insight into new concepts for manufacturing parts while increasing the efficiency of Mazak’s manufacturing facilities.

Mazak’s Production-On-Demand is a lean manufacturing approach that gives the company extreme production flexibility to quickly address current market trends while still producing high volumes of machines in a broad product mix. Production-On-Demand also allows Mazak to shorten its production lead times and minimize inventory levels, ensuring that each machine coming off the line incorporates the latest, most innovative technology.

Inside the 100,000 sq. ft. National Technology Center and Center for Multi-Tasking and Manufacturing Excellence attendees will experience highly advanced machine tools and automation systems in action. With the combination of machines in the National Technology Center and new machines in the Mazak factory, customers can see as many as 40 new machine tool models. Mazak will have these machines categorized by industry application, including aerospace, agriculture, construction, energy, medical and transportation. In particular, these machines will showcase process demonstrations that include Mazak’s 5 levels of Multi-Tasking, various approaches to 5-axis machining, high-speed and high-torque machining as well as unattended automation and systems.

Throughout the DISCOVER 2013 event, the company will conduct presentations on its new 3-4-5 The Next Level of Productivity manufacturing solution, which is the industry’s most comprehensive grouping of manufacturing resources. It provides everything manufacturers need to develop a highly optimized manufacturing system, from “3 Levels of Control” that offer advanced operator support to “4 Levels of Automation” that focus on better equipment utilization to “5 Levels of Multi-Tasking” that improve throughputs by using fewer machines to complete machining operations.

“With the global marketplace more challenging than ever, manufacturers must stay on top of the latest technology trends, which includes lowering production costs and increasing production efficiency through total manufacturing solutions. We have designed this event to demonstrate new technology of machine tools, software, accessories, tooling and automation while incorporating opportunities to gain considerable knowledge. This is a technology driven educational event and not the typical open house events of our industry,” said Brian Papke, president of Mazak Corporation. “In response, we’re putting a stronger emphasis on such solutions by adding even more process capabilities to our machines and making automation more integral to machine functionality—all things attendees will experience at the DISCOVER 2013 event.”

Mazak will provide additional details for the DISCOVER 2013 event via www.mazakusa.com/discover2013 as well as its Facebook and Twitter pages.

Honda, Acura Racers Claim Five Titles At SCCA National Championship Runoffs

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 09/30/2013 - 05:40
Honda and Acura racers won five Sports Car Club of America national titles, including a second consecutive Formula title and the closest finish in SCCA transponder-era history, in the SCCA National Championship Runoffs at Road America.

A total of 61 Honda and Acura racers, the largest participation in recent history, traveled to the classic Road America road course in Wisconsin, September 16–22, for this year’s celebratory 50th Anniversary Runoffs, taking part in 11 of the 28 classes.

Twelve Formula F drivers, exactly half of the 24-car starting field, used the HPD L15A7 engine at this year’s Runoffs, a record for the manufacturer in this open-wheel, training-ground category. Tim Kautz, who made history in 2012 as the first Honda-powered Formula F National Champion, successfully defended his title after a race-long battle with Reid Hazelton.

“It was a great race, the whole race,” Kautz said. “We [Kautz and Hazelton] were battling a little harder than we should have at the start. Then, I could see Reid decide ‘Hey, there’s too many people coming out to play, let’s pull away a little.’ So, we worked together, and the last couple of laps the gloves came off. I think the last lap I went from first to second to first to second to first. So that’s a fun race, a real fun race.”

Behind the lead pair, Jeffrey Bartz finished third in his Honda-powered Van Diemen, with former national champion Scott Rubenzer fourth in his Spectrum-Honda and Cliff Johnson fifth in another Piper-Honda.

In Touring 3, Chad Gilsinger took his Acura TL SH-AWD to victory, despite final lap drama that saw his relatively comfortable lead of more than eight seconds nearly wiped out when he encountered a slower car—and yellow flags for a separate incident at Turn 12—less than a mile from the finish.

“I was basically in cruise mode at that point, but came up on a lapped car. He was going overly slow and was pointing me by,” Gilsinger recounted. “But as I got alongside him, I noticed a yellow flag [for the incident at Turn 12]. I didn’t want [a penalty for passing under yellow] to screw up the win, so I almost stopped to let him back by, until we could get past the incident and I could [legally] pass him. It was almost a bad situation, but luckily it turned out okay.”

Gilsinger’s victory was his second Touring 3 national championship. He also won the category in 2010, driving a Honda S2000.

In the production categories, Acura Integra drivers finished first and third in F Production after an exciting race-long battle that also included the Mazda Miata of Eric Prill. Mark Carpenter took his 2nd Runoffs championship in the class, with Kevin Ruck finishing third in his Integra.

Officially, Carpenter led all 13 laps around the four-mile Road America circuit in his first Runoffs appearance since winning in 2009, but Prill pulled along side several times, and Ruck was never far behind.

“Our decision to go racing didn’t happen until June of this year,” Carpenter said. “It’s a little different feeling this time around. In such a short period of time, my guys did a great job getting the car together, even on the trailer, to get it out of the garage. I was tripping over it in my garage for two years. Even though I’ve been out of the driver’s seat, I’ve still been at the track, working in pro racing [as an engineer] for the last couple of years. I’ve learned a lot of things that have helped my driving. There’s a lot I’ve picked up on. It’s different this time around, but it feels just as sweet as 2009, for sure.”

The fourth Honda championship of the weekend came in H Production, where Lawrence Loshak won his fourth title—and second with Honda after winning E Production in 2006. Loshak started from the pole and was ahead of a multi-car, first-lap crash that briefly stopped the race.

On the restart, a missed shift dropped Losak’s Honda CRX down to fourth. But by mid-race, Loshak reclaimed a lead he would maintain to the finish. Jay Griffin finished third in his CRX to add to Honda’s podium total for the weekend, with 2011 champion Greg Gauper taking fourth in his Honda Civic.

“You know, sometimes when you get a run, you gotta go,” Loshak said of his recovery to retake the lead. “You follow them around, kind of get a judge of character of who you’re racing with, and these guys have been awesome. You gotta do it, especially at the National Championships. It worked out.”

The weekend closed out with one of the most exciting races of the weekend and, with a seventhousandths-of-a-second margin of victory, the closest Runoffs finish since the SCCA began using transponders, as Chris Bovis took his Honda CRX Si to victory lane for the second time in his career in GT Lite.

Bovis, who previously won GT Lite in 2007, started this year’s race from fifth on the grid, and spent the first nine laps battling multi-time champion Kent Prather for second place. With three laps remaining in the 13-lap contest, Bovis finally had Prather in is rear-view mirror, and set fastest race lap as he chased down the Nissan of race leader Bobby Lentz.

On Lap 12, the pair was running nose-to-tail, and sometimes side-by-side, as they fought for the lead. Coming out of Turn 12, they again ran side-by-side, rubbing fenders, through the fast right-hand Turn 13. Lentz nosed ahead after the contact, but Bovis “squared-up” the final Turn 14 and pulled alongside Lentz as they exited the left-hander, setting up a drag race to the finish where Bovis prevailed, literally, by inches.

“The difference between Bobby’s laps and mine was just a matter of a few feet here and there. I was trying to figure out where I was quicker. I was just marginally quicker,” Bovis said. “The best turn I had was [Turn] 13, which is a terrible place to do anything. I’d love to tell you I had a plan, but I consciously thought going into [Turn] 3, this is just going to happen somewhere. Road America is a very important place for me. I grew up here. I’ve seen a lot of drivers run here. I just know sometimes here, if somebody is diving really hard into the corner, you can square the corner up, cut back, and just lengthen the straightaway up, and sometimes it works. That’s honestly the only option I had. It was the [last turn of the] last lap.”
