INDYCAR to Debut New Car, Engine Formula in 2028

Submitted by ajh on Mon, 06/23/2025 - 16:56
INDYCAR Logo

INDYCAR is planning to debut a new chassis and engine formula in 2028, the Indianapolis-based sanctioning body announced.

Dallara, the Italian car designer and builder with facilities in Speedway, Indiana, will produce the chassis, which will feature a look designed to appeal to a new generation of fans while keeping styling cues recognized by all as an INDYCAR SERIES car, according to series officials. Dallara has produced chassis for the series since 1997 and has been the series' exclusive chassis supplier since 2008.

Evolution of the new chassis has included work by Dallara and recently developed simulation technology, aimed at enhancing overall "raceability."

Working in tandem with Dallara and other component suppliers, the overall car design includes a projected weight reduction of 85-100 lbs. compared to the current INDYCAR SERIES chassis.

Plans also include a new engine formula, utilizing 2.4-L twin-turbocharged V6 internal combustion engine, which is expected to provide more torque and power over the current engine formula.

Xtrac, an exclusive supplier for INDYCAR since 2000, will continue to provide transmissions for the new chassis. Development for 2028 includes a gearbox that will shed 25 pounds from the currently used unit and one that will share components with a future INDY NXT by Firestone gearbox – streamlining components for teams also involved in INDYCAR's development series.

Low-voltage hybrid engine technology, introduced to series competition with a successful launch in July 2024, will continue to evolve in the new car with longer deployment, more horsepower gain and overall improved performance.

Performance Friction Corporation (PFC) once again will be the exclusive supplier of brake system components for the series, as it has since 2017.

Safety also will continue to be a focus of Dallara's design, in close collaboration with INDYCAR technical and medical response officials, the series said. The new car will bolster safety to new benchmarks with an ergonomic driver cockpit to improve seating position, an integrated aeroscreen and a new roll hoop. The existing chassis was retrofitted with the aeroscreen upon that safety device's introduction in 2020.

Renderings and more information about the new car, along with additional partners, will be announced at a later date.

SCCA Time Trials Nationals and Ultimate Track Car Challenge logos

The 2025 Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals powered by Hagerty and the 2025 Tire Rack Ultimate Track Car Challenge (UTCC) presented by Grassroots Motorsports will converge at Pittsburgh International Race Complex (Pitt Race) in Wampum, Pennsylvania, this September, creating one of the most anticipated track weekends of the year. Scheduled for September 18–21, this marks the first time the two headline events will be held at the same facility during the same weekend.

The UTCC, now in its second decade, will take place on Thursday, September 18, ahead of the Time Trials Nationals. Known for its open-format rules, the UTCC welcomes all entrants—professional and amateur alike—provided the vehicle passes a basic safety inspection. With no limits on tires, modifications or powertrain configurations, the event emphasizes raw speed and engineering creativity over classification.

The Time Trials Nationals, set for September 19–21, serves as the cornerstone of the SCCA's national-level time attack competition. Since debuting in 2018, the event has grown into the season-ending championship for the SCCA Time Attack Challenge Series, and previously for the Time Trials National Tour (2019-2024). The 2025 Nationals will close out the series, with final points scored and champions crowned following multiple timed sessions across the three-day program.

Combining these events creates a unique opportunity for drivers and teams to participate—and possibly take home a trophy—in both competitions.

Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports Join Forces to Attack Pikes Peak

Submitted by laurap on Wed, 06/18/2025 - 12:26
Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports Join Forces to Attack Pikes Peak

PRI was invited to a sneak-peek reveal of the new Hyundai IONIQ 5 N race car customized by Evasive Motorsports before it ascends to the summit of the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak.

Conquering the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb (PPIHC) in under 10 minutes is a rare and highly coveted feat. But to do so in an SUV?

When Hyundai reached out to Evasive Motorsports, the acclaimed motorsports tuner and parts retailer quickly jumped on the opportunity to discover how they could unlock the performance of the electric Hyundai IONIQ 5 N. (Editor's note: The 'N' represents the first letter of Namyang, which is the global R&D center where Hyundai's high-performance models are created. It's also the first letter of Nürburgring, where these race vehicles are rigorously tested and refined.) Evasive Motorsports already has EV experience on the 12.42-mile Colorado mountain course in a Tesla Model 3 with driver Dai Yoshihara in 2021 and 2022, setting the fastest EV mark in the latter year.

Evasive Motorsports Pikes Peak vehicle unveil

Since there are very few off-the-shelf performance parts available for the IONIQ 5 N, Evasive had to work with its partner companies to manufacture custom components specifically for Pikes Peak.

Now, the two are working together to unleash the potential of the high-performance version of Hyundai's SUV, the IONIQ 5 N. Before any adjustments were made by the Evasive team, Hyundai touted the stock model's maximum power output of 641 hp/478 kW, 568 lb-ft of torque (with N Grin Boost activated), and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in 3.25 seconds.

This new race car debuted during a gathering at Evasive Motorsports' shop in Cerritos, California. Business owners Tony Kwan and Mike Chang kindly invited the PRI team to the unveiling before loading the car on the trailer and traveling to Colorado Springs for the Sunday, June 22, event.

"We're obviously very honored to work with Hyundai Motor Group [on] this project," explained Chang to the gathering of more than 150 media, clients and guests. "We have one of our best chances this year to do well at Pikes Peak and break the 10-minute barrier. That's the goal.

"For those who didn't know, the IONIQ 5 N is a very, very fun and fast vehicle," he continued. "The biggest difference between this and the previous EVs that we've ran is that the IONIQ 5 N is able to run for a long duration without any overheating issues, so 600-plus horsepower will be there the entire way up the mountain. So that's going to give us a really good chance at actually doing well at Pikes Peak."

Returning to pilot the IONIQ 5 N is Rob Walker, who is no stranger to the team. In fact, Walker drove Evasive's first PPIHC event in 2013 in a supercharged Scion FR-S. Both he and the car returned the following year. In 2015 and 2016, Walker drove Evasive's Toyota 86 up the 156-turn course.

"It's been amazing to see the car coming along in such a short timeframe," Walker said regarding the tight three-month project timeline. "I want to give my thanks to Mike and Tony and Evasive Motorsports for the opportunity. Not every day does someone get to drive Pikes Peak and for such a reputable company like Evasive Motorsports. On a personal note, driving Pikes is all about confidence. It's easy to think that it's all about tires and suspension and aero balance. But really, behind that, it's also about the people who support the program. And it's all about the expertise--the engineering, the R&D setup, everything that's behind the scenes that goes onto the car that actually gives drivers the need to push to the limit and also maybe go beyond it while staying cool. So I'm super happy to be driving for Evasive. That gives me that confidence to push the level. I look forward to running Pikes Peak next week and bringing you back results."

Evasive Motorsports Pikes Peak Rob Walker personal vehicle

Evasive Motorsports' driver, Rob Walker, purchased the street version of the IONIQ 5 N to get familiar with the vehicle setup while the race car was being built.

To get a race car ready in three months is obviously a challenge, so to become familiar with the IONIQ 5 N, Walker purchased the street version for himself.

"I actually got the car even before Evasive Motorsports got the car from Hyundai," Walker told PRI. "And then we started putting in brakes, suspension and slicks onto it. [It was] really for me to get specialized in that platform. When it comes to driving the actual race and race car, I'm familiar with it. I understand the software and the mechanical aspects of it and am able to extract as much as I can."

Since there are very few off-the-shelf performance parts available for the IONIQ 5 N, Evasive had to work with its partner companies to manufacture custom components specifically for Pikes Peak. Voltex Japan designed and crafted the car's front lip and carbon fiber splitter, fender flares, side skirts, carbon fiber underbody aero panels, and a massive carbon fiber rear wing for downforce.

"With a short timeframe before the race, we sent a 3D scan of the IONIQ 5 N to Voltex, allowing them to design and produce the aero parts we need," Chang said. "In the past, they would have sent a designer over from Japan, but now they can do everything from 3D files."

Krontec air jacks have been installed on the car, along with lightweight forged 19- x 11-inch Titan 7 T-P10 racing wheels with carbon fiber EVS Tuning aero discs, 310/690 VR19 Yokohama ADVAN A005 racing tire slicks, prototype EVS Tuning front and rear anti-roll bars, a custom six-point PPIHC-spec roll cage fabricated by Elmer Engineering, and a one-off Moton coilover suspension designed by MotoIQ's Mike Kojima. With all the specific motorsports upgrades, the team at Evasive claims they have shaved about 500 pounds from the original stock 4,851-pound vehicle.

Evasive Motorsports Pikes Peak vehicle unveil in Cerritos

Evasive Motorsports invited more than 150 media, clients and guests to the unveiling before loading the IONIQ 5 N on the trailer and traveling to Colorado Springs for the 2025 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.

Kwan appreciates Hyundai's commitment to "backing motorsports." He explained, "A lot of the car manufacturers right now don't really care too much about motorsports, but Hyundai is actually reinforcing it and making it a priority to make cars fast. And a car enthusiast can appreciate that. Because of that, we're doing something special, and we want to show Hyundai that we could do something special together, and then hopefully we can break records together."

To watch the 103rd Running of The Broadmoor Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, presented by Gran Turismo, eight hours of live coverage will be available on the RACER Network and the RACER+ streaming app on Sunday, June 22, 2025. A second live viewing option is available through the Pikes Peak Region Attractions YouTube channel here.

New PRI Study Finds Motorsports Industry Has $69.2 Billion Economic Impact

Submitted by laurap on Tue, 06/17/2025 - 14:58
New PRI Study Finds Motorsports Industry Powers $69.2 Billion

Motorsports Industry Powers $69.2 Billion U.S. Economic Engine, Supports Over 318,000 Jobs, New Study Finds

Groundbreaking PRI economic industry study highlights how motorsports businesses serve as a key driver of American economic activity.

PRI today released a landmark study that underscores the motorsports industry's pivotal role as a key contributor to the U.S. economy, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs, generating billions in economic activity and delivering substantial tax revenue.

PRI, the leading voice for the motorsports industry in the U.S., commissioned the research, which was conducted by John Dunham & Associates, based on 2025 U.S. economy data. The study encompasses automobile, truck, motorcycle and UTV/side-by-side racing activity.

Traditionally, economic impact reports about racing are focused on the impact of a single event--major race weekend events for a specific local and state economy.  Those are studies that examine the impact of the tourism dollars that come into the economy as a result of that single event. PRI's report is different because it determines the economic impact of the businesses that support the existence of racing in the first place.

PRI's research represents the most comprehensive assessment of motorsports' economic footprint ever undertaken to quantify the scale and significance of the business of racing to the U.S. economy. It evaluates the economic contributions from multiple racing businesses--including tracks and promoters, parts manufacturers, distributors, retailers, service providers and incorporated race teams.

Key findings from the study include:

  • The industry contributes more than $69.2 billion in annual economic impact to the American economy.
  • Nationwide, the motorsports industry supports more than 318,000 American jobs.
  • American workers in the motorsports industry earn more than $22.1 billion worth of wages and benefits.
  • The industry generates more than $8.2 billion in tax revenue, including $5 billion in federal taxes and $3.2 billion in state and local taxes.

As part of this study, PRI also launched an interactive economic impact map, enabling users to explore motorsports-related data by state and county--highlighting the industry's reach and relevance in communities of all sizes across the country. The website also offers downloadable infographics that can be shared with policymakers and other businesses to show the impact motorsports has on individual states and communities.

The PRI Economic Impact Study provides valuable data about the economic footprint of the motorsports industry in the U.S. PRI undertook this effort to provide policymakers, industry stakeholders and the public with credible, data-driven insights into racing's role as a major driver of economic activity, employment and tax revenue. The study not only affirms the industry's significance but also serves as a foundational resource to inform advocacy, investment and long-term planning.

"Racing holds a special place in American life, and this milestone report highlights the broad scope of the motorsports industry as an economic driver at the local, state and federal levels," said PRI President Michael Good. "Using these results as a foundation, PRI will continue to seek ways to foster the motorsports industry, from racetracks to manufacturers, and from small businesses to major national employers, to ensure motorsports continues to touch every part of the country and bring together people from all walks of life for competition and community. We're proud to serve as the leading voice for the motorsports industry in the U.S. and will continue delivering the data needed to demonstrate the industry's economic strength and value."

This economic impact study represents an important bookend to PRI's 2024 Racing Market Report, a consumer trends analysis that found that consumers spent $8 billion on track-use-only parts for motorsports in 2023.

In 2023, a study commissioned by the SEMA found that the automotive aftermarket industry generates an economic impact of $337 billion annually to the American economy. While the motorsports study found small areas of overlap in the parts, repair and facilities areas, the motorsports study results are a complement to the SEMA report. PRI was acquired by SEMA in 2012 to connect, protect and advocate for the motorsports industry.

Report Methodology

The PRI Economic Impact Study estimates the economic contributions made by the motorsports industry, which includes manufacturers, distributors and retailers of automotive racing parts plus racetracks, race promoters, and professional race teams.  Data are for the United States economy in 2025. John Dunham & Associates (JDA) conducted this research, which was funded by Performance Racing Industry (PRI). This work used standard econometric models first developed by the U.S. Forest Service, and now maintained by IMPLAN Inc. Data came from the PRI, Data Axle, and other government sources.

About Performance Racing Industry

Performance Racing Industry fuels the passion for motorsports by building, promoting, and protecting the worldwide racing community. PRI supports the interests of racers, enthusiasts, builders, tracks, sanctioning bodies and businesses through legislative action and advocacy, its monthly business magazine Performance Racing Industry, and the world's premier motorsports trade show, the PRI Trade Show. PRI also supports businesses by providing market research, education and best practices in motorsports business and racing technology. For more information, visit PerformanceRacing.com.
