JFR's Werner Wins Chapman Award

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 11/03/2014 - 04:29
Elon Werner, who directs the publicity and communications for drag racing’s biggest star, John Force, and Force’s championship team, was announced as winner of the 2014 Jim Chapman Award for excellence in motorsports public relations.

The Chapman Award is considered by many in the industry as the highest honor in racing public relations. It is named in memory of Chapman, the legendary PR executive and innovator, who worked with Babe Ruth and was named Indy Car racing’s “most influential man” of the 1980s. Chapman died in 1996 at age 80.

The announcement and presentation were made at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway before Sunday’s NHRA national event by Michael Knight, chairman of the selection committee, and one of Chapman’s closest friends. The award is determined by a vote of national media members, most of who knew Chapman, and is authorized by the Chapman family. PR representatives from all forms of motorsports are eligible for consideration.

Werner not only works directly with the 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion, but also Force’s rising-star driver daughters. Ashley Force Hood twice won the U.S. Nationals before stepping aside to start a family. Courtney Force has won eight Funny Car races while Brittany Force was last year’s top NHRA rookie in the Top Fuel class. Robert Hight, Force’s son-in-law, was the 2009 Funny Car titlist.

“Elon’s work in developing successful relationships with the media is reminiscent of Jim Chapman and so this honor is most appropriate,” said Knight, the longtime journalist/publicist and award rights-holder.

“Jim set the ultimate standard of professionalism, class and dignity. He knew that building good one-on-one professional relationships with journalists was important in good times and absolutely essential in bad times. That’s too often missing today in a communications age where an E-mail or text message or over-reliance on social media is incorrectly considered ‘relationship-building.’ Jim was a true ‘people person’ and knew nothing could replace a handshake, a face-to-face conversation, or the sound of another person’s voice.

“John Force has been NHRA’s greatest cheerleader for decades, working to create new fans and new customers for his sponsors. Elon has done more than coordinate the numerous interview requests for John. Just as importantly, he’s provided wise guidance to Ashley, Courtney, Brittany and Robert, as they have followed John’s example. Elon’s outreach to motorsports-oriented reporters, and well as to those in the mainstream media, has helped produce a vast amount of news coverage for the sport, Force and his team, and their corporate partners.”

Werner worked for the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks before joining the Texas Motorplex as PR manager in 1993. He eventually became that track’s general manager. After positions with several Dallas-based sports agencies and coordinating media for a number of motorsports clients, he became John Force Racing’s PR director in 2007.

Significant national media placements have included Courtney Force’s ESPN The Magazine cover, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio and virtually every major motorsports publication. Werner also has built JFR’s social media presence.

With longtime Force publicist Dave Densmore the 2007 Chapman Award winner, this is the first time that the honor has been earned by two people from the same racing organization.

Knight also announced that, as has happened before, the selection committee has chosen two equally-deserving Chapman Award recipients this year. Announcement and presentation of that person will be made next weekend at Phoenix International Raceway.

Established in 1991 by media and publicists within the CART series, the Chapman Award originally focused on achievement in CART. After a hiatus of several years, the award was resumed in 2004, with eligibility expanded to anyone working in racing PR.

Chapman started as sports editor or managing editor of several Southern newspapers before joining the New York Times. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He entered the PR business in 1946, as regional PR director for Ford Motor Co. in Detroit.

Soon thereafter, Chapman hired Ruth as consultant to the automaker’s sponsorship of American Legion Junior Baseball. They traveled together for more than two years for personal appearances and became close friends. Chapman was one of only three friends at Ruth’s bedside when he died in August 1948 and then officially announced Ruth’s death to the press corps that had maintained an around-the-clock vigil at New York’s Memorial Hospital.

Chapman proudly showcased several photos of Ruth in his office. One was inscribed: “To a pal that is a pal.” Chapman also displayed a framed letter, written on Ruth’s personal stationery from Memorial Hospital, dated July 13, 1948, inviting him to the July 26 premier of the film, The Babe Ruth Story. That letter read, in part, “That evening would not be complete without your being my guest. To you, Jimmy, I say you must be with me that evening.”

In 1950, Chapman left Ford to start his own PR firm. One of his first clients was Avis founder Warren Avis. Chapman devoted much of his time to financial PR, which he once called his “favorite form of PR,” and helped companies get recognition among analysts and even gain admission to the New York and American stock exchanges.

Chapman’s first venture into motorsports was in 1951, when he joined with NASCAR founder Bill France to promote the Motor City 250. The race was part of Detroit’s 250th birthday celebration, a Chapman client. In 1967, Chapman entered Indy Car racing with client Ozzie Olson’s Olsonite sponsorship of Dan Gurney’s team, which later featured Bobby Unser as driver.

“Jim was one of the most innovative and imaginative PR men ever to grace a pit lane,” said Gurney. “Jim practically invented most of what is now considered routine sponsor PR work. He was the first, as far as I know, who thought of putting up a sponsor hospitality tent alongside a racetrack (at the old Riverside International Raceway), filling it with extravagant race car ice-sculptures, beautiful food and beautiful people from the business, sports and movie industries. He started an ‘open house’ tradition in Ozzie’s hotel suite in Indianapolis, where journalists could rub shoulders with John Wayne or (astronaut) Scott Carpenter.”

Chapman also directed Olsonite’s sponsorship of the Driver of the Year award. He orchestrated all the details, including the media panel voting, and an annual luncheon at New York City’s famed ‘21’ Club. That gathering was considered so prestigious it was routinely attended by leaders of all the major U.S. sanctioning organizations regardless of what series the Driver of the Year competed in.

Chapman’s greatest professional acclaim came from 1981-1992, as director of CART series sponsor PPG Industries’ program. Chapman was instrumental in raising PPG’s prize fund from $250,000 to more than $3.75 million at the time of his retirement in February 1993. The all-female PPG Pace Car Driving Team was another Chapman innovation, as were the PPG Editors’ Days, when he brought business and feature writers to the tracks for lunch, pace car rides, and driver interviews.

In 1982, Chapman negotiated a landmark sponsorship for PPG with then- Indianapolis Motor Speedway President Joe Cloutier, which formally made the Indy 500 a points-paying event in the PPG Indy Car World Series, an arrangement that continued through the 1995 season. “That was one of the most satisfying moments of my career,” Chapman recalled. “Roger Penske, among others, told me it was the best thing that had ever happened to CART.” In addition to a major contribution to the prize fund, PPG later became sponsor of the $100,000 Indy 500 pole award, and paid a special winner’s bonus in the early years of NASCAR’s Brickyard 400.

“With Jim, when he says ‘jump,’ we just ask ‘how high?,” Indy 500 winner and PPG Cup champion Al Unser Jr. said on behalf of his fellow drivers. “And we do it right then.”

Indy Car Racing magazine named Chapman the sport’s “most influential” man of the 1980s, saying he turned “a public relations assignment into an art form.” After his retirement, Chapman continued to consult PPG, and agreed to Mario Andretti’s personal request that he serve as honorary chairman of Andretti’s “Arrivederci, Mario” farewell tour in 1994.

Chapman’s professional achievements earned him vast recognition. The mayors of Detroit and Long Beach, Calif., presented him proclamations and the key to each city. In 1993, Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh named him Sagamore of the Wabash, the state’s highest honor. He served as president and/or director of more than 30 Michigan and Detroit-area civic and charitable organizations. Chapman became active in the civil rights movement in the 1950s and represented the Detroit Urban League and United Negro College Fund in several controversial situations. He admitted to shedding “buckets of tears of joy” when Willy T. Ribbs became the first African-American driver to qualify for the Indy 500 in 1991.

“The true honor of this award is not the plaque,” Knight concluded. “The true honor is having your name forever associated with that of the great James P. Chapman.”

Borla Acquires Eight Stack Fuel Injection

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 11/03/2014 - 04:14
Borla Induction acquired Eight Stack Fuel Injection, who offers platform harnesses with retro looks to go with Borla's modern performance for V8’s. Styled around the traditional carbureted systems of the 1960s, the Eight Stack system combines a classic, nostalgic look with modern technology.

Thanks to today’s sophisticated management systems, Eight Stack fuel injection can be tuned to all but eliminate hard starting, plug fouling and the basically compromised air/fuel mixture associated with original downdraft carburetors.

The ability to fine tune the air-fuel and timing curves is but one part of the performance equation, as the Eight Stack fuel injection is also designed to offer improved airflow compared to conventional downdraft carbs. With a combined airflow of over 2800 CFM, the Eight Stack systems out-flow its 48mm carbureted counterpart by an amazing 90 CFM per cylinder, for a total airflow improvement of just over 720 CFM.

IndyCar Series 2015 Schedule Revealed

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 05:18
The 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series schedule will featuring 17 race events, two new race venues and a total of six ABC and 13 NBCSN event broadcasts, the series announced Thursday. The calendar features six ovals, six road courses and four temporary street circuits, and includes a total of 14 markets making a return to the calendar from 2014—but makes a significant change for the season finale.

"The Verizon IndyCar Series calendar represents another step forward in our strategy to grow the series," said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Co., the parent of IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. "There were several factors that led to the positive momentum we experienced in 2014 and we will continue to execute on those initiatives—continuity in our broadcast schedule, strategic growth of our schedule and improvements to how we promote our events. The continued support from our television partners at ABC and NBCSN, and the ongoing collaboration with promoters, teams and sponsor partners gives us a lot of confidence about our future."

The season opens with the series' first visit to Autódromo Internacional Nelson Piquet in Brasília, Brazil (March 8, NBCSN) and will be followed by a return to the streets of St. Petersburg (March 29, ABC), its debut at New Orleans' NOLA Motorsports Park (April 12, NBCSN) and a return to Barber Motorsports Park (April 26, NBCSN).

"It's great to see the Verizon IndyCar Series going back to Brazil and expanding internationally," Andretti Autosport team owner Michael Andretti said. "Having a presence outside of the U.S. is important for the health of the series and a necessary part of growing the visibility and awareness opportunities in our industry."

Sonoma Raceway will host the Verizon IndyCar Series' season finale (Aug. 30, NBCSN), marking the first time in six years that an Indy car championship will end the season on a road course, dating back to the 2007 Champ Car finale at Mexico City.

"Sonoma has always been a great circuit for the Verizon IndyCar Series," said Scott Dixon, a three-time Verizon IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner. "People always ask what my favorite track is and I often say 'the last one I won at' so it's perfect for me and Team Target. It's a very technical and challenging track and the site of the biggest Target weekend each season from a partnership perspective."

The Month of May at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will kick off again with the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis (May 9, ABC) and will be followed by Indy 500 qualifications (May 16-17, ABC) before the month culminates on Memorial Day weekend with the 99th Running of the Indianapolis 500 (May 24, ABC) on the famed 2.5-mile oval.

Pocono Raceway (Aug. 23, NBCSN) returns to the Verizon IndyCar Series schedule at the tail-end of a summer four-race oval swing that is highlighted by a 500-mile race at Auto Club Speedway (June 27, NBCSN) as well as short oval events at the Milwaukee Mile (July 12, NBCSN) and Iowa Speedway (July 18, NBCSN).

"Returning to Pocono in 2015 is great news," said Tony Kanaan, 2004 Verizon IndyCar Series champion and former Indianapolis 500 winner. "The 'Tricky Triangle' is a very challenging racetrack for us and it provides great racing and excitement for the fans. Continuity is the key word to rebuild our fan base for that region and IndyCar and Pocono are working very hard and thankfully making it happen. I'm obviously happy to be able to return in 2015 and finish the strong race we had in 2014."

The Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix returns as a double-header event (May 30-31, ABC) and is followed on the calendar by a night race at Texas Motor Speedway (June 8, NBCSN). The race on streets of Toronto has moved (June 14, NBCSN) to accommodate the Pan American Games, and Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (Aug. 2, NBCSN) returns to its familiar date on the calendar.

All races will be broadcast on radio by the IMS Radio Network through its affiliates, including SiriusXM Satellite Radio.

Cooper Tires Renews With TORC Off-Road

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 04:53
TORC: The Off-Road Championship Presented by AMSOIL will have Cooper Tire & Rubber Company continue its relationship as a sponsor for the 2015 season.

Cooper was the primary sponsor for 2014 TORC PRO Light champion Jerett Brooks and a sponsor of drivers such as PRO 4WD runner up Mark Jenkins, Arie Luyendyk Jr., Keegan Kincaid, and Doug Mittag. TORC also announced that Cooper has been named its 2014 Tire Manufacturer of the Year.

TORC Series teams count on their race tires to handle some of the most brutal punishment in motorsports. Given Jerett Brooks’ dominating PRO Light championship season and the come-from-behind wins in PRO 4WD by Mark Jenkins, it’s easy to see why so many teams rely on Cooper to provide the rubber for their off-road trucks.

“Cooper had an incredible season in 2014 resulting in nearly 50 podiums across TORC’s three PRO racing divisions including a championship in PRO Light,” TORC Series President, BJ Birtwell noted. “As the TORC 2014 Tire Manufacturer of the Year, I’m sure many teams will reach out to Cooper looking to get their hands on their winning products. As one of the most fan-friendly sponsors in the sport, we are excited that Cooper is returning for another season of TORC racing.”

“We are thrilled to continue with TORC and to be honored as the TORC 2014 Tire Manufacturer of the Year,” said Cooper’s Director of Motorsports Chris Pantani. “Watching Jerett Brooks’ amazing PRO Light Championship run, and knowing his tire of choice was the Cooper Discoverer STT, which is the same tire that consumers can purchase from their local Cooper dealers, was incredible.

“Not to be outdone, the Cooper Discoverer PRO tire also had its share of podiums in the PRO 2 and PRO 4 classes,” Pantani added.

Kinser To Wrap Up Career At WoO Finals

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 04:48
The eighth annual World of Outlaws World Finals is a must-see event for dirt fans around the globe in its own right, but this November 6-8, fans have an even bigger reason to attend the three-day dirt racing extravaganza. Twenty-time World of Outlaws champion Steve Kinser will wrap up his full-time racing career and conclude his year-long "Salute to the King" tour.

Officials at The Dirt Track at Charlotte will hold a presentation for Kinser in the souvenir midway area at the track on Friday, November 7 at 2:45 p.m. to mark the last event in his final full-time season with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series. The event is open to the fans and will include a special dedication by Marcus Smith, the president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway.

"Steve Kinser helped put sprint car racing on the map and he is a major part of the reason we are even able to put on this prestigious three-day event that has become a tradition for the dirt racing world," said Smith. "With this presentation, we hope to let him know how much he means to not only all of us here in Charlotte, but also the thousands upon thousands of fans around the world who have cheered for him during his spectacular career."

In addition to the Friday afternoon event, that evening, the annual four-wide salute to the fans with the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the modifieds of the Super DIRTcar Series on the track will be dedicated to the "King of the Outlaws."

Kinser has had quite the career at The Dirt Track, having competed in 35 of the 36 World of Outlaws races at the lightning-fast, four-tenths-mile clay oval. His 450th career World of Outlaws A-Feature win in the fall of 2001 was his first at The Dirt Track. His second triumph at the track came during the inaugural World Finals in 2007. Kinser has earned 20 top-fives and 29 top-10s at the track.

One of the king's biggest fans is current team owner Tony Stewart.

"I never missed an Outlaw show in the area when I was growing up," said Stewart. "We waited for those nights like they were holidays. It was incredible watching Steve race with Sammy (Swindell) and Doug (Wolfgang). He was our guy, being from Indiana, and when he won, it gave us all something to brag about. And he won a lot. A few years ago, when we had the chance to get him to drive for TSR (Tony Stewart Racing), it was like a dream come true. When we got him on board, my goal was for him to drive for us for the remainder of his career. He's the best ever and I couldn't be more proud."

The World of Outlaws World Finals brings together the top three series in the sport, the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series, the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and the big-block modifieds of the Super DIRTcar Series, for three nights of racing that culminate in the crowning of all three series champions.

Thursday night will include time trials for all three divisions along with heat races for the big-block modifieds. The Friday and Saturday night events will be highlighted by complete programs for both the sprint cars and late models, while the modifieds will battle in last chance and feature races.

Advance tickets and camping sales are pacing ahead of last year's World Finals and officials expect the weekend to sell out for the sixth consecutive year, but there's still a great opportunity for dirt racing fans to be a part of the action.

Three-day packages are available for $89 for adults and $34 for kids 13 and under. Single-day tickets are $25 for adults on Thursday and $44 for Friday and Saturday. Single-day tickets for kids 13 and under are $10 for Thursday and $15 for Friday and Saturday. Upgrade your ticket to include a pit pass for $15 per day. Adult ticket prices will increase on Monday, Nov. 3. For more information or to purchase tickets, call the speedway ticket office at 1-800-455-FANS (3267) or go online at www.charlottemotorspeedway.com/dirt.

Ozment Steps Down As SCCA Club Racing VP

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 10/30/2014 - 04:35
Terry Ozment announced that she will resign from the position of Vice President of Club Racing at Sports Car Club of America, effective the end of 2014.

Ozment joined the national office staff in 2004. Ozment oversaw the creation of the U.S. Majors Tour from its pilot program in the Mid-States in 2012 to its current nation-wide rollout, as well as the change in structure of the SCCA National Championship Runoffs from a multi-year stay at one venue to an annual rotation. Including the recent Runoffs event at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca and the planning already underway for Daytona International Speedway in 2015, Ozment’s fingerprints have reached five different Runoffs venues.

During Ozment’s time in the National Office, the Club Racing department pulled the Time Trials program under its umbrella and grew the Performance Driving Experience, introduced the Alternate Driver School path for a competition license, and streamlined the licensing levels for road race competition.

A key focus for Ozment has always been on customer service, and she introduced several initiatives that have spread throughout the entire organization.

“I can’t thank Terry enough for her time here at SCCA,” Lisa Noble, SCCA President/CEO, said. “The SafeRacer SCCA Club Racing program looks very different now than it did when she started. She was a driving force in creating the U.S. Majors Tour, the annual rotation for our championship Runoffs and a great resource for our worker programs. She has helped develop operational procedures, many of which have become SCCA staples. As a competitor, I know that SCCA racing is better for having her as a part of our Club.

“We’ll work closely with Terry to make a transition that’s best for Club Racing through the end of the year to help keep the momentum, and wish her the best of luck as she begins her next chapter.”

“For the last 10 years, I’ve been fortunate to be a part of the SCCA staff, the same Club I joined as a participant 30 years ago,” Ozment said. “I’ve met many wonderful people during that time, at our events, interfacing with our boards and working with our sponsors, business and track partners. I’ve had the good fortune to see how our ‘sausage’ is made and am incredibly proud of the SCCA. I will miss working with the hard working and committed staff in Topeka, and will miss the daily interaction with the unique people that make SCCA such a special organization. I plan on resuming my volunteer SCCA life when possible, so look for me at an event near you in the future. I’m thankful to the SCCA membership for making my tenure on staff so meaningful and enjoyable.”

SCCA will announce a succession plan for the vacant position prior to the first of the year.
