Maple Grove Raceway To Have All-Concrete Surface

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 01/14/2015 - 06:01
Maple Grove Raceway's NHRA-sanctioned dragstrip will undergo a significant facelift in order to create a better, more consistent racing surface for its racers.

The track will be torn up beginning at the 770-foot point of the track and will continue past the finish line. The track currently is concrete from the starting line to the 770-foot point. The old paving will be replaced to create an all-concrete dragstrip from start to finish.

"We are making a significant investment in the track to create a better, more consistent surface for our racers," said MGR Vice President & General Manager Lex Dudas. "Maple Grove Raceway is famous as the NHRA's quickest and fastest track where national records are set. We are confident our racers will be excited about the improved surface and the fans will be thrilled with the speed and performance."

NHRA Mello Yello Funny Car champ Matt Hagan, who won the Funny Car final at the NHRA Nationals in October and went on to earn his second points championship, commented, "Maple Grove was the turning point for our team," said "It is where we took over the points lead and never looked back. I love racing at Maple Grove especially when the conditions are always so good, usually good enough to set a world record. The track is phenomenal, prep is phenomenal and the fans are phenomenal. I am looking forward to getting back there to try to set another world record.”

Erica Enders-Stevens won the 2014 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Pro Stock championship and is a fan of MGR.

"This is great news," she proclaimed. "Maple Grove is a really cool track and when the weather conditions are good, the naturally-aspirated, 500-inch motors we use in our race cars can really make big horsepower. A lot of places say they are record-setting tracks, and it's true there have been records set elsewhere, but Maple Grove offers up those kinds of conditions every year so it's great to know the track will be able to handle it. It'll be good for the fans watching also. I love the facility."

Work on the track will commence as soon as the weather permits. The concrete work will be done by Descco Design & Construction in Fleetwood, Pennsylvania.

Due to the track reconstruction, drag racing at MGR will start on May 2. The spring flea market and swap meet will take place on the raceway grounds on April 11.

Now in its 53nd year of operation, historic Maple Grove Raceway is recognized as one of the leading NHRA-sanctioned drag strips in the United States. MGR’s 31st annual NHRA Keystone Nationals Mello Yello Drag Racing Series national event will take place Oct. 1-4, 2015.

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) announced the addition of motorsports veteran Geoff Carter to its Daytona Beach-based management team in the role of TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Series Manager, reporting to IMSA Managing Director, Racing Operations Simon Hodgson.

Carter also will become a member of the newly established IMSA Technical Committee. The committee will be responsible for the administration of technical aspects of IMSA racing platforms including the Adjustment of Performance (AoP) associated with the TUDOR Championship.

The committee will include IMSA Technical Director Scott Raymond, TUDOR Championship Senior Technical Manager Charlie Cook and Continental Tire Challenge Senior Technical Manager Jeff Mishtawy alongside select members of the IMSA senior management team. The Technical Working Group involving IMSA technical staff and representatives of all official manufacturer partners also will continue to operate.

“Geoff Carter has tremendous experience and earned the respect of competitors throughout our sport, making him an excellent addition to the highly experienced group we’ve assembled in our competition department,” said IMSA President Scott Atherton. “His leadership, experience and personal style will be a great addition to our paddock and will be well received by our teams, drivers and manufacturers. Geoff also will be instrumental as we establish the IMSA Technical Committee, which will be focused on maintaining consistent and frequent dialogue with all of our competitors.”

An Indianapolis native, Carter brings decades of experience into his new role with IMSA. He most recently served as director of competition for SCCA-World Challenge. Prior to that, he was team manager for the Muscle Milk Pickett Racing team in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) presented by Tequila Patrón. His background also includes IndyCar/Champ Car crew chief responsibilities with Target Chip Ganassi Racing, Player’s/Forsythe Racing and Walker Racing.

He will relocate to the Daytona Beach area from Charleston, South Carolina and will start his new position on January 15. His office will be located in the International Motorsports Center located across the street from Daytona International Speedway.

“This is my dream job and this position is right in my wheelhouse,” Carter said. “IMSA is the pinnacle of sports car racing in North America and it’s an honor to join the IMSA competition department. I’m highly motivated and confident that I will have the opportunity to make a positive impact on the TUDOR Championship and throughout the IMSA organization.”

Scot Elkins will be stepping down from the position of IMSA Managing Director, Technical Regulations on January 24.

“Scot has been an extremely valuable member of the IMSA management team for many years,” said Atherton. “He gets and deserves credit for a long list of accomplishments and successes – from the ALMS and most recently the TUDOR Championship. He has elected to pursue other interests within the motorsports industry and we wish him well in his new endeavors.”

“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at IMSA and have many fond memories from the ALMS and TUDOR Championships,” said Elkins. “I will truly miss the day-to-day involvement but the many friendships I have made over the years will continue. Perhaps there is an opportunity to continue being involved - it would be an honor to be able to consult on selected projects. I still have a lot of passion for IMSA and the many initiatives with which I was involved, but we’ll have to see what develops. It’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”

Race Track In EP Planned

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 01/13/2015 - 05:25
The Grand Prix Racing Company (GPR) has signed contracts for the construction and development of an auto race track at King Fahd Park.

Executive Manager of the company, Musa’ed Al-Khuwaiter, said that the land in King Fahd Park covering an area of 20,000 square meters had been allocated for auto racing to be completed by the end of 2015.

GPR has begun to prepare its own schemes with the cooperation of a specialized Emirati company to establish a world-class racing circuit, which will be the first to be accredited by Go-Karting Union in the Kingdom.

Al-Khwaiter said, “The company will achieve investments worth more than SR15 million in three stages which will include the infrastructure, the track and the main buildings.”

He said that the automotive sector and its activities have drawn a lot of interest among companies so huge investments have been made in it.

“The establishment of local and foreign races provides the required momentum for companies to increase their investments in this sector,” he explained.

Auto companies consider these initiatives as a distinctive opportunity to show their models through displaying specialized racing circuits.

Al-Khuwaiter said that auto racing tracks will contribute to the market movement in all related sectors, including car tires, fuel, mechanical services and oils.

These investments will push the private sector to participate in the development of tracks dedicated to racing and other activities.

Al-Khuwaiter pointed out that specialists have been commissioned to draw the tracks to be delivered during the first quarter of this year, indicating that the park district will witness a new start through the events that will take place attracting more investors.

“The automotive sector in the Kingdom has achieved several milestones during the past three years,” added Al-Khuwaiter, indicating that the race aims to support the automotive sector in the province, and the social responsibility activities of the Traffic Safety Committee to provide guidance for safe driving.
