Views & Notes: March 2015 Edition

* Power Conference: Each year PRI makes a real effort to attend SEMA’s MPMC Media Trade Conference, a late-January event that brings together motorsports journalists from across the US for three days of individual, face-to-face meetings with dozens of the industry's leading manufacturers. After attending my first conference in 2013, I compared it to speed dating (or what I imagine speed dating must look like), where media types bounce from room to room at the Embassy Suites hotel for 30-minute sessions with representatives from the parts makers of their choosing. This year my dance card was filled with great companies like AMSOIL, Comp Performance Group, Flaming River, Holley, Lunati, MAHLE and more. And the agenda was simple: Figure out what trends, topics and technologies were driving development in several of racing's key product categories. I discussed the use of exotic materials and manufacturing processes with WELD Racing; how Hughes Performance has seen an explosion in demand for street performance products in the past 3 to 5 years; how AEM is working to educate racers on the benefits of standalone EFI units; the impact of technology transfer between the different divisions at Chevrolet Performance; and how McLeod Racing partners with its dealers to promote products and applications online. Needless to say we unearthed a number of compelling story lines to cover in upcoming issues of PRI magazine. Stay tuned!

* Accelerated Learning: Cool story out of the Sunshine State, where students at Florida Institute of Technology have linked up with the Larsen Motorsports team and its 5500-horsepower jet dragsters. The unique partnership has LMS relocating its operations from Daytona Beach, Florida, to the new Palm Bay-based Florida Tech Research and Development Center, a 30,000-square-foot facility with state-of-the-art design, engineering, fabrication, training and operations capabilities; LMS also will bring in $8 million worth of equipment. “One of the reasons we approached Florida Tech is its commitment to hands-on, high-tech, real-world education, and that’s what we hope to help provide,” said LMS CEO Chris Larsen. “If anything, our affiliation is giving us the opportunity to involve more students, representing more majors, in more aspects of the company than ever before.” Indeed, Florida Tech was established at the dawn of the Space Race in 1958, and its expertise in aerospace and jet propulsion makes the university a natural fit to collaborate on the “landlocked missiles,” as Elaine Larsen affectionately terms her vehicles. Look for the Florida Tech-branded dragster in action at IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series events throughout the year.

* Short Track M&A: While racing is just getting underway at scores of short tracks across the country—with many more ramping up their 2015 seasons in the coming weeks—there’s been no shortage of behind-the-scenes activity at local speed plants. Fresh off his purchase of the ARCA Midwest Tour late last year, Gregg McKarns is set to begin his run as the new owner of Madison (Wisconsin) International Speedway. The longtime promoter and GM at Rockford Speedway in Loves Park, Illinois, stepped away last July to better position himself “to own my own track and run my own tour,” he told the Rockford Register Star earlier this year. Those plans include adding more “thrill shows” and bolstering the track’s weekly racing slate, as well as bringing Madison into the NASCAR Home Tracks family for the sanction’s Whelen All-American Series, which was accomplished in early February. Visit misracing.com for further updates and schedule information. Elsewhere, Silver Dollar Speedway (Chico, California) promoter Dennis Gage recently took the promotional reigns at nearby Marysville (California) Raceway. In addition to sharing announcer Troy Hennig, the two tracks—separated by a mere 50 miles—will band together this season for a promotion offering $10,000 to any driver that wins the first three winged 360 sprint car races at both tracks. Stakes racing was scheduled to begin with the Sherm & Loree Toller Memorial at Marysville on February 28.

Updated: ISC, SMI Planning Track Safety Upgrades

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 02/25/2015 - 04:38
The International Speedway Corporation is planning a series of safety initiatives in response to the incident that injured NASCAR competitor Kyle Busch at Daytona International Speedway earlier this year.

Busch was injured during the NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener when he was involved in a multi-car crash. His car impacted a retaining wall on the inside of the track just before turn one. The wall did not feature a SAFER barrier, a trademark safety feature at a majority of NASCAR venues.

Busch suffered a broken lower right leg as well as a broken left foot in the crash. He is expected to be sidelined for several months. ISC has announced plans to develop a new plan for installation of SAFER barriers at both Daytona and Alabama’s Talladega Superspeedway.

“Beginning with our two superspeedway motorsports entertainment facilities, Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway, ISC is developing a significant plan for the installation of additional impact-absorbing technologies including but not limited to SAFER barriers (Steel and Foam Energy Reduction),” said ISC President John Saunders. “We will utilize all available tools to ensure the safety of the drivers and our fans. It will remain our top priority.

“A thorough review of our other ISC facilities will continue with the focus to prioritize each track’s most critical areas first. This includes but is not limited to our upcoming races at Phoenix International Raceway and Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California. ISC is working very closely with NASCAR and industry experts to identify areas for additional safety protections. As we finalize our plans, we will communicate them to the drivers and necessary stakeholders ahead of our races at each ISC facility.”

In addition, Speedway Motorsports Inc. recently announced it is joining counterpart ISC to further enhance safety features at its race tracks. According to published reports in the Charlotte Observer, SMI CEO Marcus Smith said changes are planned for several of the company’s tracks, including Las Vegas Motor Speedway, as well as tracks in Charlotte, New Hampshire and Kentucky.

“With Kyle’s accident in Daytona, it’s caused us to look twice at everything and we’re working with NASCAR to see what else there is out there and I expect there will be more additions to SAFER barriers,” Smith said.

Meantime, NASCAR executive vice president and chief development officer Steve O’Donnell said NASCAR has dispatched staff members to the West Coast, where the circuit is headed for races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Phoenix International Raceway and Auto Club Speedway.

“We’ll employ temporary solutions anywhere we can (with) SAFER everywhere it’s feasible,” he said. “Obviously there are places that presents a challenge, but that’s the highest priority. We have follow-up meetings with all of the ISC tracks. We talked with Marcus Smith (president of Speedway Motorsports Inc., which owns Atlanta and six more Cup tracks), and they know the urgency.”

IMCA, RaceSaver Set Up Point Fund

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 02/25/2015 - 04:30
IMCA and RaceSaver announced a $6500 point fund to be paid to top-10 drivers in national sprint car point standings this season.

The national champion earns $1000, with $900 for second, $800 for third, $700 for fourth and $600 for fifth. Sixth through 10th place drivers each earn $500.

“National point fund shares are in addition to local track and series point funds, as well as a generous number of contingency awards,” said IMCA President Brett Root. “We continue to get inquiries about sanctioning. I believe our combined efforts will lead to the largest unified Sprint Car group in the United States.”

Returning to the IMCA RaceSaver fold this season are the prestigious Virginia Sprint Series, Sprint Series of Texas and Sprint Series of Minnesota, as well as weekly venues Eagle Raceway in Nebraska, Kennedale Speedway Park and Mountain Creek Speedway in Texas, Arlington Raceway in Minnesota and the Iowa State Fairgrounds Speedway.

The Western RaceSaver Sprint Series in California, Southern United Sprint Series and Louisiana Bayou Sprinters are already on board for 2015, as are established weekly programs at Huset’s Speedway and I-90 Speedway in South Dakota and Bloomington Speedway in Indiana, as well as newly-sanctioned Red River Speedway and Super Bowl Speedway in Texas.

Other tracks and series that have expressed an interest in IMCA RaceSaver Sprint Cars are located in Colorado, Nebraska, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

A grandfather clause will allow newly-sanctioned tracks and series to determine their own race schedules; those schedules will have to be completed by September 27 for bonus points to be applied toward national standings.

“The economics of RaceSaver and our rich history of sanctioning Sprint Cars winged racing make for an awesome combination,” Root said. “The expanded partnership between Virginia-based RaceSaver will offer Sprint Car drivers across the country the opportunity to compete under the same set of rules.”

Eagle Motorsports of Lincoln, Nebraska, returns as the division title sponsor. In addition to point fund money and contingency awards, drivers purchasing competitor’s licenses become eligible for medical insurance coverage.

Davenport Speedway Sets 2015 Schedule

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 02/25/2015 - 03:54
Although the first green flag of the 2015 racing season is still a month away, stock car fans are already talking about the schedule planned for Davenport Speedway.

Much of the talk has been about the two new events on the schedule, the REBEL 5K and the return of the Iowa Governor’s Cup.

The Iowa Governor’s Cup, the official stock car championship of the State of Iowa, will return to the Davenport Speedway for a two-day show, September 11-12. The Governor’s Cup will feature the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series. Also racing will be Modifieds, Street Stocks, SportMods, and 4-Stocks.

The first Iowa Governor’s Cup was held in 1986, at Hawkeye Raceway. The last time the Governor’s Cup was held at Davenport, was in 2008.

The 2015 version of the Iowa Governor’s Cup will have a unique format. The first night’s races will be held on the quarter-mile oval, with the second night’s action on the half-mile track. A point system will be used to determine the state champion. The total purse for the two-day show is expected to exceed $50,000.

The REBEL 5K will kick-off the 2015 season at Davenport Speedway, on Friday, April 10. The event is highlighted by IMCA Late Models racing for a top prize of $5000, on the quarter-mile track. Also racing at the REBEL 5K will be Modifieds, Street Stocks, SportMods, and 4-Stocks.

The high-speed excitement moves over to the half-mile track on Friday, April 17, for the 2nd Annual Midwest Sanction Showdown. The event marks the return of the MARS DirtCar Series and is co-sanctioned by the Corn Belt Clash Late Model Series. The late models will be joined on the track by the Modifieds and Street Stocks.

The battle for the 2015 Davenport Speedway track championships begins on April 24, at the Koehler Electric Season Opener. All five weekly classes: Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late Model, Milan Heating & Air IMCA Modified, Koehler Electric Street Stock, Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod, and Roto-Rooter 4-Stocks, will be in action.

The Lucas Oil MLRA late models will return to the Davenport Speedway on Friday, May 8, as the open late models tackle the quarter-mile oval. The race will be dedicated to Martin Diercks. The patriarch of the Diercks racing clan, who was an avid supporter of racing at the Davenport Speedway, passed away in December. The Modified, Street Stock, SportMod, and 4-Stock classes will be racing for track points.

For the fourth straight year, the Davenport Speedway will offer $2000-to-win specials for each of our weekly support classes. The IMCA Mod Madness will be held on May 22nd, with the Sport Mod Challenge on June 12th. The Street Stock Fourth of July Clash will take place on July 3, and the 4-Stock Nationals will be Aug. 14.

Other special events for the 2015 racing season at the Davenport Speedway include Season Championship night on August 28th and the Night of Destruction on Saturday, Sept. 19.
Racers will get two chances to try out their new rides for 2015. Open practices will be held, on Friday, April 3, and Thursday, April 9.

SCCA Outlines Solo Contigency Programs

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 02/24/2015 - 05:24
Top finishers at each Tire Rack SCCA National Solo event will have the opportunity to collect contingency from several manufacturers and racing-related companies.

In many cases, podium finishes in Tire Rack Match Tour and Championship Tour class-based competition will be eligible for contingency rewards. In ProSolo, prizes may be awarded in four different ways, including class and challenge competitions at each event, and year-end points in class or challenge.

Mazda, the Official Car of SCCA, will offer a $300 award for a win in the class competition of each of the three types of events. Second place will be eligible for a $175 bonus. In the ProSolo series, eligible winners in the Super, Ladies and Bonus Challenges will be awarded $400 with second place earning $250. Prizes are also up for grabs based on ProSolo year-end points with the top three in class competition eligible to take home $1000, $600 and $300, respectively. Year-end point leaders in the challenge events will have $600, $400 and $200 paydays available for the top three drivers, respectively.

MINI USA and Subaru of America will be supporting all three National Solo programs. MINI USA has made $250, $100 and $50 prizes available to eligible drivers for a podium position in class-based competition. Eligible drivers can claim $1000 from MINI USA for a ProSolo year-end championship in class. Subaru will also incentivize their customers to run with cash payouts for the three programs. At Match and Championship Tour events, eligible drivers can earn $250 for a win and $150 for a second-place finish in class competition. For the ProSolo program, a podium finish in the class portion of the event will be worth $250, $125 and $50, respectively. Top-three finishers in ProSolo Class and Challenge standings will be able to cash in with $1000, $750 and $500 prizes, respectively.

Honda Performance Development (HPD), Scion Racing and Toyota/TRD will offer awards to competitors in ProSolo. HPD will offer eligible drivers a $100 pay day for winning the class competition while second and third place will get a $50 and $25 payout, respectively. An eligible year-end points Champion will also be able to claim $200. Scion will award prizes of $200 and $100 to the top two positions in class competition, in that order, for drivers of the FR-S. Class Winners in other Scion models will be able to claim $200. Year-end Champions in class and challenge standings will be eligible for $1000. Toyota/TRD will offer a $200 award to eligible drivers for a win in ProSolo class completion at each event, while eligible season-ending Champions in Class and Challenge standings will be able to claim $1000.

Tire manufacturers are another big part of the contingency picture.

BFGoodrich Tires will support all three National Solo programs. Eligible Championship and Match Tour class winners will be able to get their hands on two free tires with a win, and will earn one free tire for a second-place finish. On the ProSolo side, eligible winners in class competition will also earn two tires with second place earning one. Super and Ladies Challenge winners will be eligible for the same prize. Eligible year-end Champions in class points will be able to claim four tires while second place can get two tires. The season-long Champion in Super and Ladies Challenge points can claim four tires.

Falken Tire will support select classes in all three divisions. In all cases they will offer cash prizes of $300, $200 and $100 to podium finishers, in that order, in class-based competition. GT Radial and Hoosier Racing Tire have also pledged their support for all three programs with identical payout schedules. Each company will provide two tires to eligible class winners in all three divisions, with second place good for one free tire. For ProSolo events, both companies will also offer two tires to all challenge winners, with second place getting one. All prizes will be doubled at the ProSolo Finale. Eligible season-long class and Super Challenge Champions can claim four tires.

Kumho Tires is also participating with their own contingency program supporting all three National series. Eligible drivers can claim a $300, $200 or $150 product credit for a podium finish, in class. That amount is doubled for any Street or Street Touring category. Both a Match Tour Shootout and ProSolo Challenge top-three finishers will earn the same payout made available during class competition. In addition, a ProSolo class or Challenge season-long Champion can get their hands on four free tires.

Bridgestone has put their name in the hat to support the Match and Championship Tour events. Eligible drivers can earn $200 for a class win, while the remaining two podium positions can earn $150 and $100.

Hawk Performance, the Official Brake Products of SCCA, will offer product certificates to eligible, in-class podium finishers at Championship and Match Tour meets. The schedule breaks down to the winner earning a $100 certificate, second eligible for a $50 certificate with third able to claim a $25 certificate.

FR Sport will be offering $150 product certificates to eligible winners in all three types of events. Bride Racing Seat has also jumped onboard to offer $100 product certificates to eligible ProSolo class winners, with second able to earn a $50 product certificate. OSGiken will also support ProSolo by offering a $200 product certificate to eligible class winners, while second- and third-place finishers can claim $100 and $50 product certificates.

Formula E Berlin ePrix Unveils Circuit

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 02/24/2015 - 05:03
Organizers of the new all-electric FIA Formula E Championship unveiled the circuit layout for the Berlin ePrix on May 23, 2015, sponsored by leading logistics company DHL.

The 17-turn, 2.47km circuit will be built within the ‘Apron’ section of the Tempelhof Airport, located in the center of the city. Designed by Rodrigo Nunes, it is the setting for the eighth race in the inaugural Formula E season.

The announcement was made during a press conference held at the former airport and attended by Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag, CEO of DHL Express Europe John Pearson, Berlin Senator Cornelia Yzer, members of the press, together with the championship’s two German drivers; Daniel Abt (Audi Sport Abt Team) and Nick Heidfeld (Venturi Team).

Agag said, “We are delighted to be in Berlin today and to be unveiling the Formula E circuit. Berlin is one of the leading cities in Europe for innovation and sustainable mobility, whilst Germany is renowned for its motorsport passion and hence why we selected it as a host city for Formula E. We’re now very much looking forward to putting on a great show for the fans, one they can be proud of and where they’ll be able to support home-grown talent Nick Heidfeld and Daniel Abt, along with German team Audi Sport Abt.”

Pearson, CEO DHL Express Europe, part of DHL who are also a founding and official logistics partner to Formula E, added, “The Berlin ePrix is the ideal event to showcase why DHL and Formula E are the perfect fit. As a pioneer of delivery with carbon-free electric vehicles in the German market, we are extremely excited to be welcoming another pioneer—this time with an even faster brand of electric car – to Berlin. We are also looking forward to identifying an ‘e-novator’ of the future at the race, as the jury of our Formula E-inspired Blue Sky Transport Design Award will select a winning electric vehicle design in Berlin in May.”

Speaking about the circuit layout, Heidfeld, said, “It’s going to be very special racing in front of my home crowd and I’m really looking forward to it. It will be the first time for me racing on somewhere like this so should have its own special atmosphere. It looks like it’s going to be a very twisty and challenging circuit with 17 turns in under 2.5km and I think the fans are going to have great visibility wherever they are. When I spoke to some friends recently they were all interested in coming to Berlin and I hope there will be a lot of other fans who will come and join us for the race.”

TORC Partners With Atturo Tires

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 02/24/2015 - 04:57
TORC: The Off-Road Championship has partnered with Atturo Tires, a brand dedicated to tires for the sport utility, crossover, and light truck market, as an official series partner.

Tires are one of the most important components of a winning truck in TORC. Only the highest-quality products can withstand the abuse that these race-trucks make as they race their way around tracks that have serious terrain challenges.

“Lap after lap, a TORC track changes and becomes increasingly punishing to tires,” says Series President BJ Birtwell. “Add high speeds and the fact that these trucks fly 200 feet through the air and land on rough terrain means that tires are put to arguably the most intense test in all of racing.”

Atturo, based in Chicago, Illinois, has created a name for itself in the tire industry by developing race-quality tires in a consumer price range to meet the needs of today’s light truck owner. Whether it’s replacing original equipment tires, or upgrading to a larger size, Atturo offers a tire to enhance the performance and appearance of its customers’ truck.

“As a leader in providing consumers with pro-quality tires in the light truck and SUV/crossover markets, Atturo is proud to partner with TORC in this series,” said Atturo’s Michael Mathis. “We’re here to let consumers know the Atturo tires that perform in the harsh environment of the TORC series are the same tires they can get every day at dealers around the globe.”
