Mackin Scion FR-S To Attack Pikes Peak Hill Climb

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 06/19/2015 - 05:18
Mackin Industries is in the final stages of preparation to send its Scion FR-S to compete at the 93rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This will be the first time that the Mackin Industries Scion FR-S will compete in a hill climb event. The vehicle was debuted at the SEMA show in 2013 modified for Time Attack competition. In 2014 the vehicle took home multiple podiums in the FR Street Class.

When an opportunity arose earlier this year for the vehicle to compete at Pikes Peak, Mackin Industries - Motorsports Division GM, Edward Lee, accepted. “Being a true racing enthusiast, I could not say no to the chance at running our own car at the world famous event,” he said.

A plan was put in place and Mackin Industries turned to some of the top manufacturers, distributors and shops in the industry to bring the program to life. Major supporters include Scion Racing, Greddy Performance, Evasive Motorsports, Toyo Tires, Turn14 Distribution, Garrett, and Sparco.

Although the car was previously prepped for Time Attack competition, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb poses a unique set of challenges. The course starts at 9,390ft and ends 12.42mi/156 turns later at 14,115ft. The high altitude and potential of extreme weather changes challenge both vehicle and driver. The lower oxygen content saps significant amounts of horsepower, causes overheating issues and reduces the effectiveness of aero modifications. To compensate the FR-S was further modified with larger turbo charger, improved engine/drivetrain cooling systems, stand alone ECU, complete E85 fuel system, further weight reduction and larger aero package. Weather and road surface conditions can also change by the minute on the mountain. It is possible to have dry surface with sunny skies at the start of the course, rain and standing water in the middle section, then snow/ice at the top section. The team is well prepared with different suspension parts and setups as well as a variety of Toyo Proxes tires.

The team is in high spirits as they finalize vehicle setup for the week long event starting June 22 and ending on race day, June 28.

New For 2015 PRI Show!

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 06/19/2015 - 03:57
The Hall of Fame Museum on the grounds of Indianapolis Motor Speedway has long been one of our favorite places on Earth. Every few steps, there's a momentous advance in racing technology as you view race cars from across the decades that were raced at the Indy 500. And there's plenty more on display at the museum, including historic race engines, photos, and more. Plus, there's the legendary Borg Warner trophy.

Well, we're excited to tell you that the Hall of Fame Museum will be installing a special exhibit in the 2015 Performance Racing Industry Trade Show! The exhibit is unique to the PRI Trade Show, and is called, "Evolution Of The IndyCar." Ellen Bireley, director of the Museum, said she plans to have six race cars brought over from the Museum for the exhibit in the PRI Trade Show, along with several race engines. The Borg Warner trophy will also make a one-day appearance at the Show.

"We are extremely proud our collection and happy that attendees from all over the United States and the world will be able to see our cars, take photos and share the their experiences with friends and family," said Bireley. "We're very honored to be included in PRI2015."

And the PRI team is equally proud to be able to present this exhibit to attendees and exhibitors at this year's big PRI Trade show.

A new exhibitor service for the PRI Trade Show will become immediately apparent during move-in days this year. Fern Exposition, the designated decorator and service provider for the PRI Trade Show, will be providing exhibitors with Personal Exhibitor Assistants (P.E.A.).

Each exhibitor at PRI2015 will have a designated P.E.A. to deliver concierge service to them on the Show floor. Each of Fern's P.E.A.'s will have an iPad to quickly access any information, place an order, look up freight, etc.

The P.E.A.s will be highly visible and accessible to attend to exhibitors' every need. Their personalized assistance will curtail long walks to the service desk on the part of exhibitors, and provide service with no waiting in line.

"This is a valuable step for PRI in improving customer service for exhibitors," said John Kilroy, producer of the PRI Trade Show. "The P.E.A.'s will introduce themselves to exhibitors as the exhibit setup crew arrives and check in on their initial needs. After that, whenever an exhibitor needs their P.E.A., all they have to do is text them.

"We appreciate this innovation by Fern Exposition, and all it will do to simplify the logistics of setting up for a big trade show," said Kilroy.

These new features of the PRI Trade Show are reflections of our goal to keep the event one of the most productive and well organized trade shows in the country. We'll have more announcements soon on the educational offerings and fun gatherings that go along with the three biggest business days in racing. Stay tuned!

Cumberland Speedway Races Pushed Back To 2016 Over Renovations

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/18/2015 - 10:38
Cumberland Speedway organizers and county officials have agreed to delay the return of dirt-track racing at the Allegany County (Md.) Fairgrounds until spring 2016.

The Cumberland Times-News reports that the agreement was reached this week after delays in renovating the facility have proven too much to stage races in 2015.

The Cumberland Speedway group, which was formed in late 2014 to revive the track, has been coordinating the half-mile track’s renovation, together with fairgrounds and county personnel.

Organizers say the Cumberland Speedway will be ready to hold a full schedule of events next year as part of the recently revived Cumberland Speedway Series. The track has held one race since 2012.

Speedway manager Calvin Davis says the primary reason for the delay is that new safety rails have yet to be installed.

Ohio Track Renamed As Spitzer Motor Speedway Set To Reopen

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/18/2015 - 10:30
Now under new leadership, Mansfield, Ohio’s north side race track is getting a new name, too.

Formerly known as Mansfield Raceway, Mansfield Motorsports Speedway and Mansfield Motorsports Park and Mansfield Speedway, the facility that houses the half-mile oval will be rebranded as Spitzer Motor Speedway.

Spitzer Motors of Mansfield has done business with the track over the years and will continue to do so in 2015 as it reopens for business June 21.

The track has been dormant since July 2010. Grant Milliron, who bought the track at a sheriff’s sale two years ago, originally contracted last fall with northern Ohio promoter Kevin Ruic to bring racing back to the facility in 2015.

Spitzer signed up as one of the chief sponsors, but when racist Facebook postings by Ruic were revealed, his promotion deal was scuttled and racing called off.

K&B Promotions, which runs Sandusky Speedway as well as a few regional touring series, stepped into the void. The promotion struck a deal to lease the track from Milliron so its traveling series didn’t lose the dates it had scheduled under Ruic.

Knowing Spitzer was going to do business with the track’s former promoter, general manager of K&B Doug Dock said they called the automotive group about restarting sponsorship. During those conversations, the idea of renaming the track after the dealership was hatched.

Spitzer Motors will also have a retail display and offer giveaways as part of its promotion of the track.

Honda-Powered HPD ARX-04b To Tackle Pikes Peak

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/18/2015 - 10:11
Honda Performance Development has upped the ante for this year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb by entering one its newest sports cars in the race up the 14,110-foot mountain.

The new Honda-powered HPD ARX-04b LMP2 coupe that competed in this year’s Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona has been entered in the 2015 Pikes Peak event, and will be driven by Verizon IndyCar Series race winner and former Formula 1 driver Justin Wilson.

The ARX-04b will be the first full-carbon monocoque vehicle ever sanctioned for PPIHC entry, and will be fitted with a 3.5-liter V6 twin-turbocharged engine. The ARX-04b will compete in the Unlimited class, which features highly modified cars that can navigate the 156 turns of the 12.42-mile course in under 10 minutes.

“This is an exploratory effort, to learn as much as we can in advance of a possible future assault on the outright record [8:13.878, set by Sebastien Loeb in 2013]. We want to see how well our ARX-04b chassis adapts to the rigors of the Climb, and the high-altitude demands placed on our production-based V6 engine,” said Art St. Cyr, President of Honda Performance Development. “The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb has always been an interesting project for many Honda divisions. The diversity of classes and very open nature of the rulebook continues to be very appealing to Honda and the passions of its associates."

The ARX-04b, which was developed through a joint effort between HPD and Wirth Research, features energy-efficient technology with low drag and high fuel efficiency and quick change front and rear bodywork.

The Pikes Peak International Hill Climb takes place on June 28, with practice and qualifying taking place on various sections of the course from Tuesday to Friday.

King Engine Bearings has received its third consecutive award from Jasper Engines and Transmissions, North America’s largest remanufacturer of gasoline and diesel powertrain and drivetrain components.

In 2012, King was awarded with Jasper’s Outstanding Service award, and now it has received a second consecutive Overall Quality award. For 2014, only five suppliers were awarded with this honor, based on Jasper’s stringent requirements.

“Each year, we strive to provide the best quality products that we can, and again this year Jasper has recognized us for our efforts.” said Limor DePetro, VP of Sales and Marketing for King Engine Bearings.  “With every year that goes by, more Jasper engines featuring King Bearings hit the road, with each engine demonstrating the quality and reliability of our bearings.”

The award was established by joint nominating efforts between Jasper sourcing and quality teams in key areas such as supplier scorecard results, corrective action requests, warranties, quality control first-piece history and quality issue resolution.
