Mackin Industries is in the final stages of preparation to send its Scion FR-S to compete at the 93rd running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

This will be the first time that the Mackin Industries Scion FR-S will compete in a hill climb event. The vehicle was debuted at the SEMA show in 2013 modified for Time Attack competition. In 2014 the vehicle took home multiple podiums in the FR Street Class.

When an opportunity arose earlier this year for the vehicle to compete at Pikes Peak, Mackin Industries - Motorsports Division GM, Edward Lee, accepted. “Being a true racing enthusiast, I could not say no to the chance at running our own car at the world famous event,” he said.

A plan was put in place and Mackin Industries turned to some of the top manufacturers, distributors and shops in the industry to bring the program to life. Major supporters include Scion Racing, Greddy Performance, Evasive Motorsports, Toyo Tires, Turn14 Distribution, Garrett, and Sparco.

Although the car was previously prepped for Time Attack competition, the Pikes Peak Hill Climb poses a unique set of challenges. The course starts at 9,390ft and ends 12.42mi/156 turns later at 14,115ft. The high altitude and potential of extreme weather changes challenge both vehicle and driver. The lower oxygen content saps significant amounts of horsepower, causes overheating issues and reduces the effectiveness of aero modifications. To compensate the FR-S was further modified with larger turbo charger, improved engine/drivetrain cooling systems, stand alone ECU, complete E85 fuel system, further weight reduction and larger aero package. Weather and road surface conditions can also change by the minute on the mountain. It is possible to have dry surface with sunny skies at the start of the course, rain and standing water in the middle section, then snow/ice at the top section. The team is well prepared with different suspension parts and setups as well as a variety of Toyo Proxes tires.

The team is in high spirits as they finalize vehicle setup for the week long event starting June 22 and ending on race day, June 28.
