New Format For Mercer Speedway Park

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/09/2016 - 04:40
Mercer Raceway Park has revealed an innovative approach to its traditional Saturday night racing events that have been the backbone of the schedule.

The new program includes an earlier starting time, no hot laps, and a stable order of events.

“Our goal was to balance the interests of our neighbors and local government officials who have voiced concerns about noise and dust from racing programs that extended into the night; to reward the loyal racers who have supported our programs over the years; to nurture the next generation of racers who will be the future of the sport; and to improve the fan experience for those who enjoy our racing,” said track owner Bill Altman.

“We think we have hit upon a formula that will provide a complete and exciting program, under prime track conditions, and in a reasonable time.”

Altman clarified that the new format will not apply to special events, such as the March 19 Jack Frost Enduro or the March 26 Chiller Thriller.

“Our staff will work closely with outside sanctions, like the the Arctic Cat All Stars Circuit of Champions, the BRP Modified Tour, the Mo Vaughn Transport Buckeye Outlaw Sprint Series, and others, to develop and publish a timetable for those special programs so that our competitors and fans will know in advance when their favorite classes are expected to hit the track.”

Weather permitting, the speedway will implement the new format on Saturday, April 2, which is scheduled to be the first Saturday Night Live! program of the year.

“We will open the pit gates at 4 p.m. and the front gates at 4:30 p.m., as usual,” Altman noted.

Racing will start at 5:30 for three divisions, the Elder Tractors Junior Sprints, the Eperthener Auto Wrecking and Ray’s Racing Collectibles Mini Stocks, and the Rock Construction Modified Lites. These divisions will compete in heat races and feature events, which will be completed by 7 p.m.

At 7 p.m., the first heat race for the Precise Racing Products Stock Cars will roll onto the track, followed by preliminaries for the Bonnell’s Rod Shop Outlaw Sprint Warriors, the Approved Toilet Rentals 358 Modifieds, and the 4 Your Car Connection 410 Sprints. Main events will follow.

“By structuring the program in this fashion, fans who want to enjoy a dinner at home with their families before coming to the track, or who have work or other personal commitments that could delay their arrival, will not miss any portion of the four premier classes that we offer,” he said. “They can come out by seven and still see all of the action in their favorite divisions.

“And, with four classes starting at seven, which was the starting time at the track when we raced six classes, we should have the fans and competitors heading home at an earlier hour. The new format will also allow us to keep more moisture in the track, which means better racing conditions and less dust.

“The Junior Sprints, Mini Stocks, and Modified Lites have less horsepower and smaller tires than the other classes, so that will prevent the track from becoming too dry too soon.”

Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America Schedule

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/09/2016 - 04:28
The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America, one of the most successful and popular charity rides in the country, is revving up for its 22nd anniversary motorcycle trek, taking place from April 30 to May 6. Former NASCAR driver and NBC Sports racing analyst Kyle Petty will lead 200 bikers on a 2150-mile route, traveling from Palm Springs to Biloxi, to raise funds and awareness for Victory Junction—a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses.

“We ride every mile, from the Palm Desert to the Gulf Coast and all the incredible miles in between, first and foremost for the children at Victory Junction,” said Petty. “Each year, the Ride creates lasting memories and gives riders the chance to check items off their travel bucket lists. This year will include the Ride’s first visit to Big Bend National Park.”

Fans are encouraged to come support the cause and greet riders at one of the Ride’s seven overnight stops or daily pit stops. Spectators along the route may also purchase memorabilia or contribute to the Ride’s “Small Change. Big Impact.” program, which accepts donations at each stop.

22nd Anniversary Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America Schedule:
(Information about scheduled pit stops can be found on the Ride’s Facebook page.)
• Day 1, Saturday, April 30 – Palm Springs, California to Phoenix, Arizona
• Day 2, Sunday, May 1 – Phoenix, Arizona to El Paso, Texas
• Day 3, Monday, May 2 – El Paso, Texas to Lajitas, Texas
• Day 4, Tuesday, May 3 – Lajitas, Texas to San Antonio, Texas
• Day 5, Wednesday, May 4 – San Antonio, Texas
• Day 6, Thursday, May 5 – San Antonio, Texas to Beaumont, Texas
• Day 7, Friday, May 6 – Beaumont, Texas to Biloxi, Mississippi

As a result of the Ride, more than 7,880 children have attended Victory Junction at no cost to their families. The camp has served as the Ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam.

This year’s Ride will feature several celebrity riders, including NASCAR Hall of Famer and seven time champion Richard Petty, 2017 NASCAR Hall of Fame nominee Hershel McGriff, NASCAR legends Harry Gant and Donnie Allison, former NFL great Herschel Walker, retired Lieutenant Colonel Allen West, and NBC Sports NASCAR personalities Rick Allen and Rutledge Wood.

“Cruising the open road with friends who become family is incredible, but helping to create life-changing opportunities for children is what makes the Ride truly one of the most popular motorcycle rides in the country,” said Kyle’s father Richard Petty.

The 2016 Ride is made possible by presenting sponsor Manheim, as well as Coca-Cola, FCA Fleet, Harley-Davidson Motor Company, Racing Electronics, FLUIDYNE Racing Products, WinCraft Racing, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Petty Family Foundation, Headbands of Hope, Original Bike Spirits, the Beef Jerky Outlet, ArticBlu and Goody’s.

“Manheim is proud to sponsor the Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America again this year. We can’t think of a better way to support the meaningful work Victory Junction is doing and the difference it is making in the lives of children with chronic illnesses,” said Janet Barnard, president, Manheim North America. “This year, we are especially excited to host stops at two of our operating locations—Manheim Phoenix and Manheim San Antonio. Our teams look forward to seeing all of the families along the route who come out to support the ride.”

Candidates Named To Receive Gorsline Scholarship

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 03/09/2016 - 04:20
Three of auto racing’s rising stars are candidates for the 22nd Gorsline Scholarship in 2015. The recipient will be named on Thursday, March 17, at Sebring (Fla.) International Raceway, prior to the running of the 64th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring fueled by "Fresh from Florida," on March 19.

The Gorsline Scholarship is presented by Gorsline Company of Rochester, N.Y., the leader in creating protection strategies for high-risk professionals. It recognizes aspiring drivers and offers a program that provides tools to assist these drivers in developing skills on and off the track to attain their professional goals. The winner will work with Dr. Jacques Dallaire, Director of Performance Prime, on an individually-designed performance-enhancement program, and will benefit from a unique season-long training program at Jim Leo’s PitFit Training, courtesy of Gorsline Company.

“These drivers have accomplished much in their short racing careers, and are already on a path to success. Because they're still at the beginning of their journeys, they can advance their on-track talents to a very high level with these programs,” said John Gorsline, principal of Gorsline Company. “We at Gorsline Company are excited to recognize the achievements of them all and to assist them in their progress. They are true rising stars.”

Madison Snow was the 2015 recipient of the Gorsline Scholarship. The candidates for the 2016 Gorsline Scholarship are:

Kenton Koch (Glendora, Calif.) - Kenton, 21, in his first attempt, won the Rolex 24 At Daytona this year, driving for JDC Miller Motorsports in the Prototype Challenge Class. He'll be competing at this year's 12 Hours of Sebring race as well. Kenton started racing karts when he was 8 and transitioned to cars at age 16. He progressed up the Mazda Ladder System, winning four consecutive championships and over a half-million dollars in racing scholarships. As of now, after Sebring, the rest of his race season is unfunded, and he is seeking a sponsor. He partnered with Donate Life America in support of his mom who received a heart transplant last year. His focus is to encourage those he encounters to register as an organ donor and help lower the number of people on the waiting list. Now that he is on a national stage, the producers at Fox Sports along with other media have shown a great interest in his story. During his Daytona post-race interview, Kenton was asked to share his family’s story.

Dylan Murry (Cumming, Ga.) – At 15 years old, Dylan has been racing for eight years and has earned nine championships in Karts and Legends cars, and is currently in the chase for his 10th. He won the 2010 Andretti Pro Cup Karting title, the 2012 and 2013 GSKA and Southeastern divisional championships, the 2011 and 2013 (in two classes) World Karting Association national championships, and the 2014-15 Legends Atlanta Motor Speedway Championship. He is the son of David Murry, Firestone Firehawk, World Challenge Series’, and Sports Renault champion, who drives a Porsche in the 2016 IMSA Continental Tire ST Series. Dylan raced in the 2015 Legends Series, including “Thursday Thunder” at Atlanta Motor Speedway, and earned a test in Spraker Racing's Late Model car.

Skylar Robinson (Augusta, Ga.) – Skylar, 19, began his karting career in 2008, becoming the Briggs Junior Lite, Junior Medium and Junior Restricted champion in the 2010 World Karting Association. Switching to cars in 2012, he was third in the 2012-13 Skip Barber Winter Series championship, was the 2013 British Racing and Sports Car Club Formula Ford Triple Crown Champion, and Vice Champion in the same group’s National Championship. In 2014 he placed a close second in the SCCA Pro F2000 Championship Series. In 2015, he competed in the SCCA Pro F1600 Championship Series where he once again finished second, despite missing the first two races of the season. Robinson also had the opportunity to drive a Porsche 962 at the Daytona Heritage event this year during the Rolex 24 weekend. SEMA Applauds New Congressional Legislation To Protect Modified Motor Vehicles

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 03/08/2016 - 05:24
SEMA President and CEO Chris Kersting today praised Congressional members for their introduction of a bipartisan bill that would protect thousands of American racecar enthusiasts from overreaching U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.

“The EPA’s new interpretation of the Clean Air Act would essentially rewrite the law and 46 years of policy and practice,” said Kersting. “Without congressional intervention, the racing community and racing parts manufacturers would be operating outside of that new law and could be targeted for enforcement.” The language in H.R. 4715 makes clear Congress’ intent to exclude competition-only cars from the scope of the Clean Air Act, including converted street vehicles.

H.R. 4715, the Recognizing the Protection of Motorsports Act of 2016 (RPM Act) was introduced by U.S. Representatives Patrick McHenry (R-NC), Henry Cuellar (D-TX) and Richard Hudson (R-NC) to ensure that converting street vehicles to racecars used exclusively in competition does not violate the Clean Air Act. The practice was unquestioned until last year when the EPA published draft regulations that would make vehicle and engine conversions illegal and subject to the law’s tampering penalties.

Motorsports competition involves tens of thousands of participants and vehicle owners each year, both amateur and professional. Retail sales of racing products make up a $1.4 billion market annually. According to the National Speedway Directory, there are over 1,300 racetracks operating across the U.S., including oval, road, track and off-road racetracks. If the EPA regulations were to be finalized, the impact on racers, racetracks and businesses that cater to the racer community would be substantial.

The EPA recently re-opened the proposed regulations to receive additional public comment.  However, allowing public comment does not resolve the issue because the EPA has not withdrawn the problematic language in its proposed regulation, nor has it conceded that motor vehicles may be modified for competition use.

“SEMA thanks Representatives McHenry, Cuellar and Hudson for introducing this bill,” Kersting added. “We intend to work closely with our congressional allies to ensure that the Clean Air Act continues to allow the conversion and use of street vehicles as racecars.”

The RPM Act has been assigned to the House Energy and Commerce Committee for consideration. The EPA proposed regulations are scheduled to be finalized this summer.

Supporters of legislation to overturn the EPA regulation may contact their member of Congress and urge them to support the RPM Act by clicking here: http://semasan.com/issue_alert.asp?g=SEMAGA&issue=EPA&parent=SEMAGA

Canadian GT3 Cup Slate Released

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 03/08/2016 - 04:23
A return to the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal is a leading highlight of the 2016 schedule for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama, announced by the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA).

The series, one of 20 global Porsche GT3 Cup single-make championships, will compete at five venues, including Canada’s two largest cities in support of the two most prestigious motorsports events in the country—the Canadian Grand Prix Formula One race at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal and the Honda Indy Toronto. The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama also will feature its first event outside of Canada with two rounds at iconic Watkins Glen International in Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Those three events are part of a record 12 rounds for the series, which provides thrilling action and grooms drivers for future IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship competition or professional GT racing worldwide.

Petro-Canada’s Ultra 94 also has renewed its title sponsorship of the series, which enters its sixth season in 2016.

“Ultra 94, Petro-Canada’s super premium gasoline, is pleased to continue as the title sponsor of the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama,” said Deborah Gullaher, vice president, marketing, Suncor. “The series will continue to provide an opportunity to demonstrate the high-octane performance and exceptional quality of Ultra 94.”

Another key addition for 2016 is the introduction of the Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car, which will be featured in the Silver Cup class. The class will compete alongside the Platinum Cup and Gold Cup classes for Porsche 911 GT3 Cup machines in selected events.

“This is the strongest schedule ever for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama,” said Randy Hembrey, IMSA senior series manager. “The series is entering an exciting new era with continued support from Petro-Canada’s Ultra 94, a new tire partner in Yokohama and the introduction of a new car class. The intense competition provided by this championship will thrill fans at high-profile events across two Canadian provinces and upstate New York. It represents a great schedule for the fans, and we’re also grateful for the continued commitments of our teams, drivers and partners.”

The 2016 season starts May 20-22 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and ends Sept. 2-4 at the same historic venue in Bowmanville, Ontario. High-profile events also will take place at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Watkins Glen Int’l, the streets of Toronto and the Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières, with two rounds at every series event.

The traditional Victoria Day season-opening weekend will feature the debut of the new Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car in the Silver Cup class. The Cayman GT4 Clubsport race car offers a cost-effective entry point for the series, featuring a new, state-of-the-art spec race car based on the successful Porsche Cayman GT4 street car.

The Silver Cup class will compete alongside the Platinum and Gold Cup GT3 classes at four of the series’ six events, with separate standings and awards presented in an eight-round championship. Silver Cup competitors also will race at both event weekends at CTMP and at Toronto and Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

After the season opener at CTMP, teams and drivers then will head to Montreal for rounds three and four on June 10-12. History will be made at that event, as the entire Canadian series and the Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama championship will race simultaneously on the same circuit. Yokohama has been the official tire supplier of the USA series since 2009 and will assume that role starting this season in the Canadian series, creating opportunities for special joint races.

The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama then will cross the Canada-United States border for the first time to compete in rounds five and six June 30-July 2 at historic Watkins Glen Int’l during the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen, one of the marquee events in the WeatherTech Championship. The second and final joint event weekend of the season between the Canadian and USA series will take place at The Glen.

Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama teams and drivers then will move to Canada’s largest city for rounds seven and eight on July 15-17, supporting the Verizon IndyCar Series for the third consecutive year before large, enthusiastic crowds at Honda Indy Toronto.

Teams and drivers then will return to Quebec for rounds nine and 10 on Aug. 12-14 during the popular Grand Prix de Trois-Rivières (GP3R) street race. The season-ending rounds 11 and 12 will take place Sept. 2-4 at CTMP to run in conjunction with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

“We are thrilled to welcome the GT4 Clubsport as it joins the GT3 Cup car on the grid this spring, a mere six months after its world unveiling in Los Angeles,” said Alexander Pollich, president & CEO, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd. “The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama has all the elements to make it an exceptional racing season.”

The Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama is divided into three classes – Platinum Cup, featuring the 2014-16 model Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, which is based on the seventh, and current, generation of the street car; Gold Cup, which is comprised of the previous iteration (model years 2010-2013) of the race car; and Silver Cup, for the new Cayman GT4 Clubsport car. A Masters Championship also is conducted in the Platinum class. Each class is awarded with its own podium at the end of every race and individual champion at the end of every season. Points are awarded by finish in class.

Hart Marx Advisors LLC, a newly formed partnership between aftermarket veterans Devin Hart and Tom Marx has acquired the assets of Marx Group Advisors. The new entity will continue to provide industry specific guidance and expertise to companies within the aftermarket in the mergers and acquisitions (M&A) arena.

Hart has been named managing partner of the new firm. Partner Tom Marx, founder and owner of The Marx Group, Inc., a company with a solid reputation as a leading aftermarket marketing communications firm, sees the move as complementary for both companies’ growth. Hart was named president and co-CEO of The Marx Group in 2015. Marx is also co-CEO of The Marx Group.

Most recently, Hart and Marx addressed the topic of growth, “How You Can Benefit from Aftermarket Consolidation” at the CAWA leadership conference that was held in Napa, California. The informative session was extremely well received by an audience of distributors and suppliers, especially in light of constant consolidation activity facing leaders in the aftermarket, and a current business environment that is driving M&A activities to all-time high levels.

“Consolidation introduces change and with it opportunity to achieve growth beyond current industry standard projections for organic-only growth,” said Marx. “We wanted to address those concerns and look at ways aftermarket leaders can effectively manage their company’s growth, as well as capitalize on opportunities that present themselves during this period of strong consolidation activity.”

Combined, Hart and Marx have more than 25 years of experience in the M&A field, with many more years of aftermarket business management experience. The new organization will be more capable than ever before, as the firm accesses a formidable network of relationships within the Tier 1/Tier 2 and automotive, performance and commercial vehicle aftermarkets.

Turn 14 Distribution has reached an agreement with Honeywell Transportation Systems and its Garrett by Honeywell brand to become an officially licensed distributor for Garrett GTX and GTW turbochargers, Performance Intercoolers, and direct-fit turbocharger kits. In the process, Turn 14 Distribution becomes the only wholesale warehouse distributor to offer 100 percent of Garrett’s performance and diesel turbocharger lines.

“Garrett turbochargers are well-known in both the performance and diesel segments of the aftermarket. We are excited to add these products to support the needs of our wide-ranging customer base,” said Kyle Shelley, Turn 14 Distribution’s director of sales.
