Chevy Unveils New IndyCar Front Wing Design

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 05/13/2016 - 05:32
A trick piece of Chevy aerodynamics spied during pre-season testing finally appeared during an official Verizon IndyCar Series practice session.

Team Penske's entries for Helio Castroneves and Simon Pagenaud were the most notable cars to sample Chevy's alternate front-wing endplate (FWEP) pieces during the latter stages of opening practice for the Angie's List Grand Prix of Indianapolis. Pagenaud's No. 22 entry posted the fourth-fastest time with the new parts installed and Castroneves was directly behind in fifth.

The high-downforce FWEP arrangement was first seen at Sonoma Raceway in February on Castroneves' No. 3 Chevy, and was slated for an introduction between this weekend's Grand Prix of Indy or, as some drivers suggested, for next month's race on the streets of Belle Isle in Detroit.

With the added downforce, Chevy's new FWEP arrangement could be used by some teams in qualifying today as they look to generate the fastest individual laps, and for teams considering a high-downforce aero package for the race, the new FWEP could also be seen on Saturday. A limited pool of the new FWEP pieces is the only consideration for the GP of Indy; with few spares available, reverting to a front wing with the standard FWEP could be required if damage is incurred.

The innovative FWEP design takes a page from Honda's FWEP system used in 2015.

Where Honda used curved winglets attached to the wider upper wing elements (that sat atop the stock Dallara mainplane), Chevy has integrated its curved winglets into a smaller, tighter outside package. The new road course FWEP units bolt to the inner endplates that cap its upper wing elements.

One notable change to the FWEP system unveiled is an alteration to the outermost endplate. The piece tested at Sonoma featured a vertical endplate that extended close to the tire. The final version seen at the GP of Indy flares out up front and does not extend as far back towards the tire.

In addition to creating more downforce, Chevy's final FWEP pieces also offer a more robust diversion around the outside of the front tires as air flows between the new fin-like endplate, is compressed and channeled, and then routed to the left or right of each Firestone. Gurney flaps are used in two places at the trailing edge on the FWEP—atop the unit and at the side—to extract and accelerate more air from beneath the system.

The use of the new FWEPs has coincided with removing the rear tire ramps, while Chevy teams using the standard FWEPs have kept those ramps in place.

Chevy's new FWEP system is the second of three permitted aero kit updates that have been seen in 2016. The third is expected to appear once Indy 500 practice begins next week.

NASCAR is set to honor another class of Hall of Famers.

The NASCAR 2017 Hall of Fame class will be announced on Wednesday, May 25. Five nominees from a list of 20 will be selected for the class.

The announcement will air live on NBCSN, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, NASCAR.com and MRN.com at 5 p.m. ET. Enshrinement of the 2017 class will be in January.

NASCAR announced its first Hall of Fame class in 2010, inducting founder Bill France Sr., seven-time champion Richard Petty, former NASCAR president Bill France Jr., seven-time champion Dale Earnhardt and championship owner Junior Johnson.

Since then, the classes have showcased a mix of the men who built the sport and those still participating in it in some capacity or recently retired from racing.

To be eligible, drivers must have competed in NASCAR for at least 10 years and have been retired for two years. Those who competed for a minimum of 10 years and are 55 or older by Dec. 31 of the year prior to the nominating year are immediately eligible, as is any driver who has competed for 30 years or more. Drivers may continue to compete after hitting these requirements and still be eligible. For non-drivers, such as crew chiefs, track operators, owners, etc., the individual must have worked at least 10 years in the NASCAR industry. In addition, NASCAR allows individuals who made significant contributions to the spot, but left early because of a variety of circumstances, are also eligible.

Achievements and contributions are considered by the voting panel in selecting the five.

This year's nominees are a diverse group that built the sport from its fledgling roots to its current status. Here is the list from which the voting panel must select the five new members:

F1's New Engine Rules Explained

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 05/13/2016 - 04:51
After months of negotiations, Formula 1 bosses finally reached an agreement on the cost, supply, performance convergence and noise of engines from 2017 until 2020.

In Spain, the FIA's head of power train Fabrice Lom and race director Charlie Whiting provided further explanation of the changes, which have been included in the revised regulations.

PRICE

From next season, the cost of an engine supply will be reduced by 1 million euros [$1.1m] compared to this year's prices, and that figure will drop by a further 3 million euros [$3.4m] from 2018 through to 2020.

"We first worked to reduce the cost because we cannot ask the manufacturers to reduce price without less cost," said Lom. "Firstly, in 2017 we will go down to four power units per driver, whatever the number of grands prix.

"In 2018 we go down to three ICE plus turbo plus MGU-H—which is a big task for them—and only two energy store, control electronics and MGU-K. So it's nearly 50 percent less parts. This should decrease the costs by a nice amount.

"And we will also have standard sensors. This is a small part but still a reduction."

The target cost price for customer engines was 12 million euros [$13.6m] and Lom believes the agreement is "not that far" and "very close" to that figure from 2018 onward. A price of €12m will be enforced only if there is no offer or no contract in place and this is seen largely as a fallback position.

OBLIGATION TO SUPPLY

Manufacturers will be obliged to supply engines to teams who require them from next season.

"The basic is that if you are a team with no offer, you can ask the FIA to have one, and there is a system of ballot," said Lom. "We will take the power units that have the smallest number of customers.

"If there is only one [that has the fewest customers] this will be the one that has to give a power unit. If there is more than one there will be a ballot to decide which will supply."

Lom conceded the process as to how the ballot would be implemented was unclear. McLaren has made it clear it wants to keep Honda as a sole supplier, but Lom said the manufacturers had come to an agreement.

"Everybody understands that for the sake of Formula 1 we need this to be implemented," he said. "I think next year everyone would be able to implement this."

Manufacturers must tell the FIA what contracts they have in place for next season by this Sunday, May 15.

"If a team has no contract at all then the FIA will try to convince a power unit manufacturer for this to happen," explained Lom. "If there is no contract at the next deadline of June 1, then we will organize the ballot."

With regards the specification, Lom said manufacturers must deliver updates to their customers in a "timely manner."

"So, for example if you have your update today because you introduce a new engine, next time you have a new engine, your customer team it must have the update," he said.

He also said with the consent of the FIA, it is possible to offer a "previously homologated spec."

CONVERGENCE

While there is a desire for the performance gap between the manufacturers to be closed, Lom has stated there is nothing specific within the regulations to ensure this happens.

"We are not mandating convergence. We have just measures in place that should help convergence," he said. "Naturally convergence will come with the stability of the regulations and we'll try to speed up convergence by having these measures, but there is no prescribed convergence at all."

The measures referred to by Lom are embedded within the rules, such as the removal of the development tokens, putting limits on performance dimensions—such as the crankshaft and the weight of some parts—as well as a limit on boost temperature to prevent developments on cooling.

It had been suggested the convergence should be the four manufacturers lapping within 0.3 seconds of one another around Barcelona. But, Lom said, "This figure of 0.3s is something that apparently went into the media. There is no prescription, as I said.

"We will measure it at the beginning of each season, over the first three races, which is before the deadline to make a change for the following year. If it is considered to not be at the level we expect, we will go back to the Strategy Group and report.

"What happens then will be a decision of the Strategy Group, according to the F1 governance that we have today."

Revealing as to how the FIA will monitor the convergence, Lom added: "We don't look at lap times. We have a torque sensor, tools to simulate everything so we can calculate the performance of the power unit itself on each car, and we transform this into a power index.

"You cannot talk only about horsepower—you have to talk about the index, and we will check every car of every lap over these first three races.

"We take the best of each power unit from each race, and then we do the average, which should give us a power unit index of performance for each manufacturer. We then have translation of this index in lap time on the Barcelona track."

NOISE

The lack of a "wow" factor when it comes to the noise of the power units has been a cause for concern since the formula was introduced in 2014, but for next season the FIA and the teams are looking for a significant improvement via a specific device.

"There is a perception the sound is not enough, so at the moment we are working with what we call a sound generator, and with very good results," Lom said. "It is not fake, but it is not purely natural, let's say. It could really increase the intensity and the quality of the engine's sound."

At this stage, however, Lom is unable to explain fully the working principle behind it, adding: "It's a bit early to say; it's really under development. But we are using the sound energy from the exhaust—even if it is not very high because we recover a lot—to increase it. I think it's a bit too early to say more."

Formula Lites Revamps Schedule

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 05/12/2016 - 05:27
The Pirelli Formula Lites Championship Series announced that changes have been made to the 2016 series schedule. The schedule is being adjusted to better accommodate race team commitments and ensure sufficient competitive presence at every event. Formula Lites will release the updated 16-race schedule in the near future.

"We want to make sure that there are plenty of opportunities for teams to participate in the Pirelli Formula Lites Championship Series," said Ryan Arciero, co-partner, Formula Lites. "We want to build on the great racing that occurred at every event of last year's inaugural season."

Jackie Ding and his Group-A Racing prepared Formula Lites FL-15 have been testing the new 2016-spec'ed Honda K24 engine in preparation for the 2016 Pirelli Formula Lites Championship Series. The team reports "significant" performance increases with the enhanced package.

Porsche Reveals 2017 GTE Car For WEC

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 05/12/2016 - 05:13
Porsche has released pictures of the new 911 with which it is set to make a full-season factory return to GTE Pro in the 2017 World Endurance Championship.

The photographs show the all-new 911 RSR undertaking a shakedown at Porsche's Weissach test track at some undisclosed point over the past month. The car is based on the facelifted 991-shape 911 road car, which has hit the market this year, but no further technical details have been released.

Porsche is not revealing whether the new GTE contender will be normally-aspirated, like the existing 911 RSR introduced in 2013, or turbocharged.

The first GTE class 991 carried over the four-liter normally-aspirated flat-six engines of its 997-shape predecessor rather than adopting one of a new generation of direct-injection powerplants introduced in the road cars. A Porsche spokesman said that no further technical details would be communicated until the official launch of the car towards the end of the year.

The 2017 911 RSR has already been tested by a number of Porsche's roster of GT drivers at Weissach and has already started its development program away from the research and development facility.

Marco Ujhasi, overall project manager of GT works motorsport, said, "It is definitely unusual to put several drivers behind the wheel at a rollout. But since all of our works drivers are involved in the development of the new car, the ones who could fit it into their schedules came to Weissach and turned a couple of laps."

Porsche, which won the GT drivers' and manufacturers' titles in last year's WEC, withdrew its factory squad from the series this season.

It made it clear at the time that it needed to take a sabbatical to divert resources into the development of an all-new GTE racer built to a revised set of regulations introduced for this season.

Porsche has yet to confirm its WEC return, but its spokesman suggested it was on the cards alongside a continued presence in the IMSA SportsCar Championship in North America.

"The big events in GTE are the Le Mans 24 Hours and the WEC and IMSA series, and if you build a new car, you want to race it in the most important races and series," he said. "But our programs for 2017 are not decided."

Porsche has maintained a presence in GTE Pro with a 2015 car updated to this year's rules fielded by the Proton team on a works-assisted basis for factory drivers Richard Lietz and Michael Christensen.

It will also run two full factory GTE Pro cars in the Le Mans 24 Hours next month under the Porsche Motorsport banner.
