IMSA Makes Competition Staff Adjustments

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 01/19/2017 - 07:55
With the introduction of new race cars and the anticipation of expanding grids in several of its sanctioned series, International Motor Sports Association officials announced some organizational changes to the IMSA competition team.

Geoff Carter, who joined the sanctioning body as senior series manager for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship prior to the 2015 racing season, has been promoted to senior director, technical regulations and compliance.

Carter will continue to serve as chair of IMSA’s technical committee, and now has a dedicated role as the primary technical liaison with manufacturers and teams. He is responsible for the technical management for all IMSA-sanctioned series. A search for a new WeatherTech Championship manager is under way.

Kyle Novak adds the position of race director for the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge in 2017 to his existing race director duties for the IMSA Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and the IMSA Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Yokohama. Novak originally joined IMSA’s Race Control team in 2015 as race director for the Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo North America.

“As more competitors join IMSA’s racing platforms, it has created the opportunity for our competition team to grow as well,” said IMSA Vice President of Competition Simon Hodgson. “Geoff Carter has provided strong leadership since the formation of IMSA’s technical committee, and has played a pivotal role in conjunction with the technical committee in the development of IMSA’s BoP process and expanding technical capability. He has earned this promotion.

“The increased interest we’ve seen in both the WeatherTech Championship and Continental Tire Challenge heading into the 2017 season provides an opportunity for Beaux Barfield to focus his attention on the WeatherTech Championship while Kyle Novak takes over similar responsibilities in the Continental Tire Challenge. Kyle has done an excellent job with some of our single-make championships and we are pleased to be able to expand his role and responsibilities.”

FIA Approves Sale Of Formula One Group To Liberty Media

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 01/19/2017 - 03:14
The World Motor Sport Council has unanimously approved the change of control of Delta Topco Limited (the holding company of the Formula One Group and thus the owner of the Commercial Rights of the FIA Formula One World Championship) from CVC Capital Partners in favor of Liberty Media Corporation at a meeting in Geneva.

The transaction will see the transfer of 100% of the shares in Delta Topco to Liberty Media Group, one of the tracking stocks of Liberty Media Corporation.

During the meeting, representatives of the prospective new owner made a detailed presentation of their strategy. The members of the World Motor Sport Council then had the opportunity to ask questions about the specifics of the agreement, the ongoing working relationship with the FIA and Liberty’s plans for the sport.

Liberty, Formula One Group and the FIA intend to collaborate to create a constructive relationship that will ensure the continued success and the development of the FIA Formula One World Championship in the long term.

The World Motor Sport Council’s decision confirms the FIA’s belief that Liberty, as a renowned media organization with expertise in both sport and entertainment, is well positioned to ensure the continued development of its pinnacle Championship.

The FIA holds a 1 percent shareholding in Delta Topco. As part of the sale by CVC to Liberty Media Corporation, and in line with the agreements between the FIA and the Formula One Group, the FIA will be carried along in the sale process under the same conditions as CVC and all other shareholders.

Atlanta Motor Speedway To Be Repaved In 2017

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 01/18/2017 - 08:48
Twenty years after it was last resurfaced, Atlanta Motor Speedway's historic racing surface is scheduled to be repaved this spring, following the March 3-5 NASCAR Weekend tripleheader. Work is scheduled to begin in late March with an expected completion in mid-April.

The current asphalt at AMS is the second-oldest racing surface on the entire circuit, and officials credit its longevity to a combination of the mild Georgia winters and a meticulous maintenance program over its entire two-decade lifetime.

Since its last repave in 1997, the track has hosted 31 premier NASCAR series races, 19 NASCAR XFINITY Series races, 15 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races, eight ARCA Racing Series races, four IndyCar Series races and countless U.S. Legends and Bandolero car races on its quarter-mile "Thunder Ring."

Despite the wear and tear of aging in recent years, the track has been a favorite of many competitors who have raved about the challenging nature of the track. Its aged surface, slick driving conditions and multiple racing grooves have produced not only exciting races and close finishes for fans in attendance, but a technical challenge for drivers who have battled slick corners, fast straightaways and ample opportunity for passing.

Some of the most notable NASCAR races have taken place on the current surface, including Dale Earnhardt's 0.010-second margin of victory over Bobby Labonte in 2000, Kevin Harvick's emotional and record-setting 0.006-second margin of victory over Jeff Gordon in Earnhardt's Richard Childress Racing car the following year, Carl Edwards' first Cup Series victory in 2005 and subsequent season sweep of both Atlanta races that year and the first-ever Atlanta night race in 2009.

Geoff Bodine's amazing AMS qualifying record was set at the very first race on the current surface in 1997, when he blazed around the track in 28.074 seconds at an average speed of 197.478 mph. And currently, Bobby Labonte and seven-time NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson are tied at five for the most Cup Series victories on the surface. Johnson can break the tie in the final race on the surface at the 2017 Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 as he attempts his third consecutive victory at Atlanta.

"Many of NASCAR's greatest moments have occurred on this racing surface, and I have no doubt the world's best drivers will give it a proper final event before the new surface comes to life," said AMS president Ed Clark. "Whichever driver can take home the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 trophy in 2017 will mark the end of one era of great racing in AMS history and the beginning of another."

The repaving project calls for a brand-new asphalt surface to be lain over top of the current surface. AMS's quad-oval layout and 24-degree banking in the turns will remain unchanged.

While a smoother surface and blended seams will accompany the new repave, the high speeds and multiple racing grooves unique to Atlanta Motor Speedway are expected to endure and produce the same, thrilling racing experience for both fans and drivers for many years to come.

Drivers who have enjoyed the unique quality of the existing AMS racing surface will have one more opportunity to etch their name in the track record books when NASCAR returns March 3-5.

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series qualifying will kick off the weekend on Friday, March 3 before the only same-day doubleheader will take to the track on Saturday, March 4 with the back-to-back Rinnai 250 XFINITY Series and Active Pest Control 200 Camping World Truck Series races. The Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 Cup Series race will round out the weekend on Sunday, March 5 with a scheduled 2:30 p.m. green flag.

For more information or to purchase tickets, contact the Atlanta Motor Speedway ticket office at (770) 946-4211, (877) 9-AMS-TIX or visit www.atlantamotorspeedway.com.

Neil Verhagen, 15, Earns RRDC Mark Donohue Award

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 01/18/2017 - 08:33
Neil Verhagen, a 15-year-old high school student from Mooresville, N.C., was named the 46th recipient of the RRDC Mark Donohue Award. This award is presented annually by the Road Racing Drivers Club for outstanding performance, competitiveness and sportsmanship during the SCCA National Championship Runoffs. It is voted on by RRDC members attending the Runoffs and/or viewing them live on the Internet.

Verhagen became the youngest SCCA National Champion in history, winning the Formula F class during the SCCA Runoffs presented by Garmin VIRB at the 2.258-mile Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Sept. 19-25, 2016. Before this win, IndyCar racer Graham Rahal, a full year older than Verhagen, was the youngest when he captured the Formula Atlantic National Championship at Mid-Ohio in 2005.

The teenager also claimed the SCCA Super Sweep Award, winning his U.S. Majors Tour Conference, the national points championship, a key regular season race, and, finally, the Runoffs.

The award is named for RRDC member and former president Mark Donohue, who won his first National Championship in the SCCA E Production class in 1961. He later won the Indy 500, the Can-Am Championship, three Trans-Am Championships, and the IROC Championship.

Verhagen will be officially presented the award at the annual RRDC members’ dinner at the Rolex 24 At Daytona on January 25th.

Driving in his first Runoffs in the No. 3 K-Hill Motorsports/Hoosier Mygale SJ11/Honda, Verhagen started from pole position and built a 15-second lead before a full-course caution brought the field back on his tail. He quickly moved ahead after the restart and took the checkered flag with a 5.51-second margin of victory.

He covered the 21-lap race, which was shortened to a 40-minute time limit, at an average of 77.266 mph. His fast lap of 1:30.133 (90.187 mph) topped the field by nearly a second.

"I definitely knew that it was going to be hard, but I got a little bit lucky at some points in the race, because I built an early lead, enough for the draft not to affect me any more," he said. "And then from there they started battling behind me. I got a decent lead, but the full-course caution scared me quite a bit because it bunched the pack back together. There was a lapped car that kind of interfered in the race and blocked the No. 2 position after the restart. I got lucky on that too.

"We had quite a good pace the whole weekend after qualifying on pole," added Verhagen. "I knew I had the pace to win it at least; it was just a matter of how the draft played out."

As for earning the RRDC Mark Donohue Award, “I knew about the RRDC Donohue Award, but I had no idea I was even in contention to receive it until I got the phone call from Bobby Rahal. I am extremely honored and very happy to receive this award," said Verhagen, who won the 2016 F1600 Series championship and was named the only American on the FIA's 20 Under 20 list.

"It's obviously not easy to win the Runoffs or the F1600 Series championship. I got done what I came to do and it was a very good year for me," said the driver who's won two karting championships since starting his racing career in 2010.

Verhagen credits his family for allowing him to pursue his dream. "My family has no relation to racing at all, which makes it quite difficult because at the same time that I'm going through it for the first time, it's also their first time," he said. "My dad had a group of friends at work who had BMWs and would take them to track days but not to race. I thought that was kind of cool and I wanted to try it, and then he got me into a go-kart eight-nine years ago, and here we are today.

"My family has been absolutely amazing. Even my brother races, and that makes it even more difficult to try to support two kids. And it's because of their support that I'm here."

His racing heroes include Will Power, who spurred Verhagen's interest in open-wheel racing after meeting him at an IndyCar race, Michael Schumacher, Mark Donohue, and Dale Earnhardt Sr., with whom he shares an unfortunate connection. Verhagen was born on Feb. 18, 2001, the same day that Earnhardt lost his life at the Daytona 500.

Even though he lives in the heart of NASCAR country, he has a clear goal. "I'm determined to get a professional ride in either IndyCar or F1," he said.

RRDC president Bobby Rahal, a Runoffs champion (’74 B Sports Racing and ’75 F Atlantic) long before he won the 1986 Indianapolis 500, emphasized the RRDC Mark Donohue Award is “about personal spirit and performance behind the wheel. Those qualities are more important for this award than winning the race.

“The RRDC honors Neil not only for his outstanding drive to win, but for his natural ability and skill at such a young age to safely win a championship against other outstanding drivers and cars in the field.”

Every year, the RRDC Mark Donohue trophy is an engraved glass top mounted on a special, racing-experienced wheel, provided by an RRDC member. This year’s wheel was donated by Roger Penske and Team Penske, celebrating its 50th year in the sport. It came from the No. 22 Shell-Pennzoil Ford driven by Joey Logano at the Nov. 13 Phoenix NASCAR race, where he shredded the tire performing a victory burnout. That race represented a key victory in the Chase as it allowed the team to advance to the championship at Homestead the next week.

In related news, it was recently announced that Verhagen was named to the 2017 Red Bull Junior Program, and will drive in the Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup series on the MP Motorsport team. For more information on that, please visit here.

INDYCAR Extends Firestone Tire Contract

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Wed, 01/18/2017 - 04:18
INDYCAR announced a multi-year contract extension with Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations LLC, continuing its longtime partnership with Firestone as the official tire supplier of the Verizon INDYCAR Series.

The announcement extends the tire brand’s involvement in open-wheel racing that dates to Ray Harroun’s Firestone-equipped Marmon Wasp winning the inaugural Indianapolis 500 in 1911.

"Firestone is part of the fabric of INDYCAR and its commitment to evolving performance, innovation and safety in the Verizon IndyCar Series has been remarkable," said Jay Frye, INDYCAR president of competition and operations. "The Firestone brand has been part of our sport for more than 100 years and continues to be an integral partner in the growth of INDYCAR on and off the racetrack."

Firestone has been involved in racing competitions since the early days of the automobile, particularly at the Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. Alexander Rossi’s win at the 100th Running of the Indy 500 last May was the 67th for Firestone—more than all other tire manufacturers combined—in the iconic race.

Firestone, which returned to INDYCAR racing in 1995 following a 20-year hiatus, has been the sole supplier of Verizon IndyCar Series tires since 2000 and provides teams with a known, stable and reliable platform for the future of INDYCAR.

"For more than a century, the Firestone brand has utilized racing as the ideal stage to showcase the trusted dependability of our tires," said Lisa Boggs, director of motorsports, Bridgestone Americas. "This partnership is integral to our marketing initiatives as it allows us to engage with fans via the unique, multi-faceted platform that the Verizon INDYCAR Series provides, and we look forward to building upon the brand’s time-tested racing legacy."

This season, following discussion with Verizon INDYCAR Series teams, INDYCAR and Firestone have added to the overall tire allotment at each event to increase the amount of on-track activity during practice sessions. Additionally, teams will be permitted to run one set of alternate (red-sidewall) Firestone Firehawk tires during Friday practice sessions at all road/street course events to better evaluate their capabilities for qualifying and the race.

In addition to its contributions to on-track competition, Firestone is a key partner in the marketing and promotion of the Verizon INDYCAR Series. The season-long activation for Firestone includes sponsorship of race events, on-site fan engagement via the INDYCAR Fan Village and a national advertising campaign that spans television, radio and print/digital media outlets.

The 2017 Verizon INDYCAR Series season begins with the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on March 12. The race will be broadcast live on ABC (noon ET), the Advance Auto Parts INDYCAR Radio Network, Sirius 212 and XM 209.

NMCA To Allow Any LS-, LT-Powered Vehicle In CPCS

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 01/17/2017 - 07:50
The National Muscle Car Association (NMCA) has announced changes to its 2017 Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series rules and regulations.

The Chevrolet Performance Challenge Series (CPCS) consists of different classes that run under the same banner: Wiseco Boostline Connecting Rods Drag Radial, Holley EFI Real Street, Chevrolet Performance Stock, LME Street King, and Proform Rumble as well as Gear Vendors True Street.

Each class has a different set of classifications and prohibitions. However, in each class, racers must use an LS or LT engine.

Every class in the series was built around racing the LS—and now LT—platform. However, up until this year, the field was limited to just Chevrolet vehicles.

That rule, as of 2017, is no more. The NMCA, in conjunction with Chevrolet Performance, has opened all classes to any car, no matter the manufacturer, as long as it has an LS or LT engine and still conforms to the class rules in which it will race.

If you are interested in participating in any of the aforementioned classes, you can view the new set of rules here, or visit the NMCA’s website here.

Team Penske announced that it has formed a technical alliance with Nikon Metrology, a technology and product development company.  The announcement expands upon an already existing relationship between the two companies.

Under the terms of the new multi-year agreement, Brighton, Michigan-based Nikon Metrology will help enhance Team Penske’s manufacturing process of its race cars competing in NASCAR, working closely with the organization’s fabrication department. Team Penske will also rely on Nikon Metrology’s superior optical instrumentation and resources to support its overall technical processes at its headquarters in Mooresville, N.C.

“Team Penske is continuously looking for opportunities to further develop the processes involved in building fast, consistent and reliable race cars,” said Tim Cindric, Team Penske President. “By expanding our partnership with Nikon Metrology, we now have an industry leader that is committed to taking the quality of our race cars to another level.”

Nikon Metrology plans to incorporate the new partnership with Team Penske into the company’s future marketing and promotional efforts.

Through specific case studies, Nikon Metrology will highlight how its equipment and support continue to raise the level of performance of Team Penske’s racing programs.

CARS Tour Changing Qualifying, Race Formats For 2017 Season

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 01/17/2017 - 05:09
On the heels of honoring the 2016 champions at the annual CARS Tour banquet held at Hendrick Motorsports Team Center in Concord, NC, The CARS Tour announced multiple qualifying and race event formats for the upcoming 2017 season, set to kick off March 11 at Concord (NC) Speedway. The formats are meant to add identity, strategy, and variety to the young touring series heading into its third season of competition, according to a press release from CARS Tour.

Three different qualifying formats will be used over the course of the 12-race season. Traditional single car qualifying will continue to set the starting field at select events, with the fastest car starting from the pole position, just as has been done since the series inception in 2015.

New for 2017, however, will be Group Qualifying, in which drivers will be grouped via random draw, and have five laps to set the fastest time. The fastest qualifier overall will start from the pole position for the feature event.

Perhaps the most intriguing new qualifying format for 2017 will be Knockout Two Step Qualifying. Teams will get eight minutes in round one to make a qualifying attempt, with the fastest eight competitors advancing to round two. After a short four minute break between rounds, round two participants will get five minutes to qualify on the pole position for the events feature race. With hopes of increased fan attendance, CARS Tour officials will make an effort to schedule these timed sessions closer to the feature event start times.

Similar to qualifying, three different race formats will be utilized throughout the 2017 season. The majority of the events will still see the traditional 100-150 green flag lap races that followers of the CARS Tour have become accustomed.

The two new race formats introduced for the upcoming year will be Duel and Live Pit Stop race formats. In Duel events, each division will have two 50-75 lap feature events each paying $2,500 to win and $300 to start with each race awarding championship points. Thus the 2017 championship battle will see drivers have 15 chances to earn points at 12 different events.

The Live Pit Stop format is said to have the ingredients for suspense and unpredictability that fans of short track racing desire. Competitors will be required to make two pit stops, for position, under yellow flag conditions throughout races 100-150 laps in distance. The pit stops will consist of a single crew member removing an item from the car as set forth by CARS Tour officials. No tires or fuel can be changed or added during the stops thus the format will add no additional cost to teams, while still adding a vast amount of strategy.

“You have to be adaptive, unique, and create fresh new ideas that keep people interested and entertained. As a society it’s pretty evident that we think, act, and socialize different than we did even as a little as five years ago. At the end of the day we understand that we as a series are in the entertainment business while our competitors are in the competition business. We feel these new formats not only add to the entertainment value, but in fact add to the competition value with a true team effort via strategy now necessary to win at some CARS Tour events, “ explained Chris Ragle, CARS Tour Series Director. “Our sport, unlike that of many stick and ball sports, has gotten complacent at times over the years when it comes to changes. That’s something we want to make sure doesn’t happen within the CARS Tour. We feel these are changes that will add to our series overall and make for an exciting 2017 season."

As part of the continued education process of these formats as well as the major events at Bristol, Anderson, and the new Mid Atlantic Classic on the 2017 schedule, the CARS Tour will host two Facebook Live question and answer sessions open to fans, drivers, owners, and sponsors. The first one will be Monday January 23rd at 8pm, followed by another one on Wednesday February 8th at 8pm. These two sessions will lead up to the 3rd Annual CARS Tour Media Night at SRI Performance in Mooresville, NC on Wednesday March 1st at 7pm. The official CARS Tour Facebook page can be found here.

All 2017 forms for the upcoming season including rulebooks, owner/driver registration forms, annual race entry, and the hard card application have been released on the CARS Tour website at www.carsracingtour.com. For more CARS Tour information, call 704/662-9212.
