Bosch Giving Track Contributions Reach $10,000

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 06/30/2017 - 05:18
Bosch Giving Track contributed $1000 to the Hendrick Family Foundation in June, in recognition of Jimmie Johnson’s victory at the AAA 400 Drive for Autism.

Taking the checkered flag in his Bosch-equipped No. 48 Chevrolet SS on June 4, Johnson secured his third Giving Track contribution to date this season. The Hendrick Family Foundation encourages people to work together to transform the lives of those in need and have a meaningful impact on communities.

To date in the 2017 season, Bosch-sponsored teams have earned $10,000 in contributions from the Giving Track program. Through Giving Track, Bosch contributes $1000 to a team-specified charity each time one of its sponsored drivers scores a 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series victory.

“Giving Track allows Bosch to provide support for the causes that are important to the NASCAR community with each victory by our sponsored teams,” said Tony Pauly, director of advertising and brand management for Robert Bosch LLC, Automotive Aftermarket NA. “Bosch is honored to contribute to these deserving organizations, including the Hendrick Family Foundation, so they may continue to drive their missions forward.”

Norma “Dusty” Brandel Named Seventh Squier-Hall Award Recipient

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 06/30/2017 - 05:05
NASCAR and the NASCAR Hall of Fame announced legendary motorsports reporter Norma “Dusty” Brandel as the seventh recipient of the Squier-Hall Award for NASCAR Media Excellence.

A media staple in motorsports for more than six decades, Brandel started her career in 1955 as a writer for the Hollywood Citizen-News before joining both the San Fernando Sun and Valley View and Glendale News-Press. Her career also included several stints in press information at Southern California tracks, including Whiteman Stadium.

She covered her first NASCAR race at Ontario Motor Speedway in 1972. There, she became the first woman to report from inside the NASCAR garage. She received the American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) Angelo Angelopolous Award in 2001.

Brandel will be honored during 2018 NASCAR Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony festivities and featured in an exhibit in the NASCAR Hall of Fame in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“Though she was a pioneer for female journalists, that fact soon became just a footnote in an exemplary career – her journalistic talents and her dedication throughout a more than six-decade career far transcended gender. We look forward to honoring her with the well-deserved Squier-Hall Award,” said Brian France, NASCAR chairman and CEO.

Today, Brandel resides in the Los Angeles area and serves as the president and executive director of AARWBA and is a board member of the West Coast Stock Car Hall of Fame.

Brandel was among eight nominees voted upon by a panel comprised of NASCAR and NASCAR Hall of Fame executives, journalists, public relations representatives and former competitors. The Squier-Hall Award was created in 2012 to honor the contributions of media to the success of the sport. Legendary broadcasters Ken Squier and Barney Hall, for whom the award is named, were its initial recipients. Chris Economaki, Tom Higgins, Steve Byrnes and Benny Phillips have since won the award.

Road America To Bring Back $100 IndyCar Ticket

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/29/2017 - 10:51
Road America will again offer the $100 IndyCar ticket in 2018, in hopes of bringing back the estimated 100,000 that turned out for three days in 2016 for the Verizon IndyCar Series Grand Prix.

The perfect weather led to a strong walk-up and last Sunday's crowd looked to be in the 30,000-35,000 range but was shy of the estimated 50,000 that attended last year's IndyCar show.

So George Bruggenthies, the president and general manager at RA, is going back to the popular $100 ticket in 2018 in hopes of bringing back the estimated 100,000 that turned out for three days in 2016.

For that price, a fan gets a four-day ticket next year that includes gate admission, access to the IndyCar paddock and free parking. Bruggenthies expects the offer to start by Wednesday at RoadAmerica.com and it will be available until Sept. 1.

By comparison, single-day tickets last week were $30 for Thursday, $40 for Friday, $70 for Saturday and $80 for Sunday.

Amid the excitement of the Boys & Girls Club Dirt Track Classic for King of the West/NARC 410 sprint cars, there was a pleasant surprise for Calistoga Boys & Girls Club officials.

The club received a donation of $250,000 from the race in the form of two checks. One was for $100,000 and was donated by Staglin Family Vineyards, and the other for $150,000, was an accumulation of donations from the racing industry and people throughout the country, said a spokesperson from David Abreu’s office.

The donation brings the fundraising campaign for the new building and operating costs to $10.5 million.

“This is a huge help,” he said. “We’ve been running a top-off campaign to push over the finish line, and this certainly does it. This is a huge blessing, a very unexpected gift. It goes to the generosity of this valley.”

Yaconelli and a hundred or so children, members of the Boys & Girls Club, were given free admission to the race along with T-shirts and other goodies. The kids loved it and had a great time, he said.

Stepping Up No Prep

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/29/2017 - 03:52
Despite having to cancel its inaugural June 28 event at US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Michigan, due to rain, Lane Automotive’s $30,000 No-Prep Triple Crown Series is still turning heads.

The appeal of no prep, of course, lies in its great equalizer—a surface with little to no preparation or treatment that’s about as close as it gets to side-by-side racing on city streets—along with big purses like those offered at the Triple Crown.

According to organizers, full-bodied race cars must have factory quarters and a roof, as well as a factory VIN, and weigh at least 2750 lbs. Drag slicks are allowed, but traction compounds are not, and entry fees are $100 per event.

“No-prep, up until recently, is probably the most unorganized, unorthodox racing you can imagine. It’s like street racing, except you are bringing it to the track,” drag racer and Dirty South No-Prep Series co-owner Mike Murillo told PRI when we covered the topic back in April.

Featuring a $10,000 guaranteed cash payout and a contingency program for each race, the second and third races on the schedule are tentatively set for July 26 and August 23. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/NoPrepTripleCrown.
