The national free teen defensive driving program B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) will head to Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Illinois, on Saturday and Sunday, November 3-4. Sessions will be held from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

Utilizing vehicles provided by Kia Motors and with partial funding from the St. Louis Area Kia Dealers, the B.R.A.K.E.S. program offers teens extensive behind-the-wheel instruction by ex-law enforcement and professional racing drivers, teaching new drivers and their parents how to be safer on the road. Exercises include distracted driving awareness, panic braking, crash avoidance, drop wheel/off-road recovery, and car control/skid recovery.

B.R.A.K.E.S. is a GuideStar Platinum-rated 501(c)(3) charity that offers free, hands-on defensive driver training to teens and their parents nationwide. Multi-time Top Fuel drag racing champion Doug Herbert founded the road safety organization in honor of his two teenage sons, Jon and James, who lost their lives in a car crash in 2008.

In related news, Gateway Motorsports Park is recruiting local groups for fundraising for its 2019 NASCAR, NHRA and INDYCAR events. For more information, visit here.

ELECTRONIC BORE GAGES

The L.S. Starrett Company has introduced two new Bluetooth enabled series of electronic digital bore gages with a range of accuracy and convenience features for increasing measurement throughput when inspecting internal hole dimensions. The 781BXT AccuBore Electronic Bore Gages are a trigger-operated gaging system, and the 770BXT Electronic Bore Gages, operated via thimble rotation, feature IP67 protection against dirt and coolant, making them ideal in harsh machining environments. Bluetooth wireless technology in both bore gage series enables fast, robust measurement data acquisition capabilities without the encumbrances and limitations of cables. Wireless technology also provides an ideal platform for manufacturers bracing to meet the comprehensive big data requirements of Industry 4.0. Both the 781BXT and 770BXT Bore Gage Series feature enhanced wear life due to carbide-faced measuring contacts that are available on sizes above ½" (12.5mm), resolution of .00005" (0.001mm), and accuracy of up to .00015" (0.004mm). Gages also feature push button inch/ metric conversion. Wireless output capability for SPC analysis is available via USB to a PC or RS232 connection.

HYDRAULIC HANDBRAKE LEVER

Wilwood's new hydraulic handbrake lever assemblies provide a lightweight, high-leverage component for drift cars, drag race cars, rally cars, or any application where hand-actuation of one or more brake calipers is employed. Hand brakes can be configured as stand-alone circuits with dedicated fluid reservoirs and auxiliary calipers, or set up as a pass-through system to operate brake calipers that are also actuated by the foot brake master cylinder. The lever features a full length, ergonomic hand-grip in an all-aluminum design that saves weight over steel lever models. They accept any vertical flange master cylinder with 2.25" bolt spacing.

HYPER-FLEX BODY MOUNTS

Energy Suspension has released complete body mount sets for 2008-2016 F-Series Super Duty and are available in Standard, Super and Crew Cab configurations. Energy Suspension’s Hyper-Flex polyurethane body mounts are made to outlast and outperform the factory rubber, ensuring proper body to chassis alignment, straight body with proper ride height and reduced body sway.

REAR DRAG RACE WAVE ROTORS

Aerospace Components’ Rear Drag Race Wave Rotors offer a large weight savings—2.4 pounds (titanium) vs. 5.6 pounds (steel) each. These are direct replacement for Aerospace Components steel rotors and will fit any Aerospace Components rear brake kit. They are gas ported for better braking, with no special brake pads required. These components are made in the US.

Calico Coatings Expanding NC Headquarters

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/30/2018 - 11:04
Calico Coatings has embarked on a $3 million, 8,500 square foot expansion to its headquarters at Balsom Ridge Business Park in Denver, North Carolina. Upon completion, Calico’s state-of-the-art facility will total nearly 30,000 sq. ft. and house over 40 employees and all company operations.

“Customers are demanding faster delivery and increased capacity,” Calico Coatings Owner Tracy Trotter said. “The only way we can keep up with this level of demand is to increase our productivity, and that means more coating chambers.”

With an expected completion date of December 1, 2018, the new addition will house production for thin film coatings including Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) and Chromium Nitride (CrN) processes, freeing up the existing space for expansion of thick film coatings and the shipping and receiving area.

A new coating chamber will be implemented, with two additional chambers being added every year for the next five years for a total of 10 new chambers in all.  The new chambers will be three to five times larger than the current editions, allowing Calico to coat more parts at once and increase turnaround time.

USAC Southwest Sprints Aligns Rulebook To Allow 410 Engines, Increased Purses In 2019

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/30/2018 - 10:47
The United States Auto Club (USAC) has announced that the Sands Chevrolet USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series will open up its rules package to include 410 cubic-inch engines beginning in 2019.

The move now aligns the series with the same rulebook as the USAC AMSOIL National and CRA Sprint Car Series. Although 360 c.i. engines will remain legal to run with the series, the rule change will give the series a major boost heading into the future.

“The tradition of both USAC and Arizona Sprint Car racing is with 410 c.i. engines,” Series Coordinator Chris Kearns said. “More and more Arizona-based teams have been purchasing 410’s of late and this move is going to bring new life to the Southwest Sprint Car Series in 2019 and beyond.”

The Southwest Sprint Cars will also now feature a raised purse for each race, paying a minimum of $2000-to-win and $250 to start. Additionally, the USAC/CRA events at Arizona venues will now be co-sanctioned by the Southwest Sprints and will have an increased payout of $3000-to-win and $400 to start.

Furthermore, beginning with the 52nd running of the “Western World Championships” at Arizona Speedway in November 2019, the main event will now have the Southwest Sprints competing with the National Sprint series.

Throughout its history, the Southwest Sprints have been a primarily Arizona-based series, with a handful of races this year at locales such as Nevada, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas, but in 2019, the series will head to California’s Perris Auto Speedway.

The Southwest Sprint Car Series is currently in its eighth season under USAC sanction.
