Formula E Announces New Rules, Factory Teams And Venues For Season Six

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 06/14/2019 - 11:13
Formula E has published the schedule for season six of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, featuring new venues in Seoul and London as part of the longest and most comprehensive calendar to date.

The 2019-20 calendar was created following the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) meeting in Paris, comprising of 14 races in 12 cities and covering four continents.

New teams have also been announced with the arrival of Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, taking the total number of cars to 24 and completing a full grid for the opening rounds in Ad Diriyah on November 22-23, 2019.

Alterations have also been made to the sporting regulations, which are set to be introduced for season six.

New for next season, drivers will have an additional 10kW of power available when using ATTACK MODE, increasing from 225kW to 235kW. Also, drivers won’t be able to activate ATTACK MODE under Full Course Yellow (FCY), or when the safety car is deployed, meaning the drivers will have to go off the racing line to activate ATTACK MODE under normal race conditions and retain the risk of losing positions.

Furthermore, to enhance the effects of energy management, during safety car periods and under FCY, a fixed quantity of energy, equal to 1kWh per minute for the duration of the caution period, will be subtracted from the total energy remaining in each car.

This measure means that drivers will no longer be able to save energy by driving at lower speeds under FCY or behind the safety car, leading to more varied strategies and close racing to the finish line. Also introduced for next season, the countdown clock will stop if the race is temporarily suspended—remaining at the discretion of the FIA Race Director—with the aim to complete the full amount of time.

The FIA also announced the series’ Gen2 car will be used through the end of season eight. In addition, more points will also be on offer in season six, with an additional point handed out to the fastest driver in the qualifying group stages.

Spec MX-5 Challenge Series Adds More Power, Shootouts

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 06/13/2019 - 07:54
Spec MX-5 Challenge, the third-generation Mazda Miata series, has opened up to Touring 4 cars and created shootouts that will earn one driver a new race car at the end of the season.

The series has been working closely with Mazda Motorsports to create a new Spec MX-5 class in SCCA and NASA road racing competition.

“We have been working with Mazda since November of last year on the rule set, the technologies and the branding,” said Tom Martin, director of the Spec MX-5 Challenge Series. “The whole thing is a coordinated effort.

“There will be some significant changes technically to the cars. We will have a new motor with more power. What’s great about that is it allows us to run a NASA class very competitively as opposed to being in a class but not having the right power-to-weight ratio to really fit into that class.”

Martin hopes to draw up to 10 regular-season cars at each race, with up to 10 independent area drivers joining the spotlight events.

Another change is the continuation of special prizes and competition, such as this year’s awarding of a race car to one single-event driver, which might add to the series' ranks.

“Most racers start thinking about running in a new class, but think, ‘OK, I need car….’ So giving an opportunity to rent a car, run one race weekend, potentially win a car, then you have the car you need to run a follow-on season,” Martin said.

The Spec MX-5 Challenge series was created to fill a gap between Spec Miata and the Battery Tender Global Mazda MX-5 Cup. Based on the third generation Mazda Miata, the cars are designed to be equal and nearly as quick as a Global MX-5 Cup car. In its inaugural year, the series was arrive-and-drive, full-season only.

The series’ next race is at Sonoma Raceway on June 14-16, then has events at Road America (Aug. 17-18) and Utah Motorsports Campus (Oct. 5-6) before its finale at Road Atlanta (Nov. 2-3).
