Tour de Road America Fundraiser Returns

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 08/13/2012 - 12:53
Race fans, families, cancer survivors, and cyclists return this coming weekend to Road America's four miles of sweeping turns, hills and natural scenic beauty for the 9th annual SUBARU Tour de Road America "Bike Ride to Fight Cancer" on August 17 at 6:30 p.m. CT.

They will be joined on the track by professional racing drivers, teams and their families from the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón, Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship, USF2000 Championship and other racing series. Together, they aim to raise $25,000 for three organizations that support cancer survivorship: the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer, the official charity of the American Le Mans Series, as well as LIVESTRONG and the Vince Lombardi Cancer Clinic in Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

The Road America course challenges cyclists with its hills, but is still family-friendly. Entire families will come out and enjoy four miles of smooth racing surface, with no cars and no traffic. The fundraising ride follows Friday's auto racing activities and is open to cyclists of all abilities, and all kinds of bikes.

For many cyclists and race fans, it's the highlight of the summer—the chance to turn laps on the smooth track alongside their racing heroes as the sun sets over the scenic Kettle Moraine countryside of Elkhart Lake.

Guy Cosmo, driver of the No. 02 Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari F458 Italia in the ALMS GT class took to a bike for the 2011 event and is now a serious cyclist. Other drivers from the American Le Mans Series scheduled to appear include Cosmo's ESM teammates Ed Brown and Johannes Van Overbeek, Bruno Junquiera, Colin Braun, Martin Plowman, actor/driver Patrick Dempsey and his teammate Joe Foster, Duncan Ende, Jeremy Dale, and Henri Richard.

A silent auction of one-of-a-kind motorsports memorabilia, cycling gear, and local items will take place on Friday and Saturday, culminating just before the start of the American Le Mans Series feature race on Saturday afternoon.

For more information and to register for the ride, visit www.pelotonride.org.

Circuit Of The Americas Begins Final Paving Project

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 08/10/2012 - 12:06
Circuit of The Americas has begun an intensive paving process that is required to prepare the racing circuit and entire facility for the inaugural 2012 Formula One United States Grand Prix, scheduled for November 16-18.

The massive paving project will involve final paving of the 3.4-mile racing surface, venue access and service roads, and walkways around the property. A paving project this large and complex requires acute attention to detail to ensure the finished surface can accommodate varying weather conditions, as well as high performance vehicles racing at extremely high speeds throughout the year.

Defined as “echelon paving,” the process involves three to four paving machines moving in unison along the racetrack surface to ensure a uniform, seamless top layer of asphalt.

The process and equipment are considered to be highly specialized. One particular instance in which this paving machine is being used is in Central Texas to pave the State Highway 130 extension.

The pavement material itself has a unique composition compared to that used for public roadways. It is required to be highly skid-resistant for the type of vehicles driving on the track, as well as the high speeds being reached. The composition ensures consistency of texture, smoothness of ride, and the conformance to the specifications outlined by motorsports governing body, the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

Approximately 10,500 tons of hot mix asphalt is used to pave the track itself.

The paving process will limit access to on-site visits and interviews. The Circuit of The Americas communications team will work to accommodate media interviews or meetings at its downtown offices during this time.

Memorial Tour To Celebrate Life And Times Of Carroll Shelby, Cobra 50th Anniversary

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 08/09/2012 - 12:40
Beginning August 13, cars from the Shelby American Collection and from the Miller Motorsport family of companies will begin a journey to California and back to celebrate Carroll Shelby’s life’s work—the Cobra, one of the most important automobiles ever made.

“The Shelby American Collection…showcases the accomplishments of Carroll Shelby and the Shelby American team and the incredible history made with those cars. The dedication and passion of the people behind the museum to preserve that history really comes through,” said Allen Grant, the 1965 World Manufacturers Champion Driver for the Shelby American Team.

The trip will include stops at:

•    The Ford’s Cobra Heritage Display at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion at Mazda Raceway (August 17-19)
•    The Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance (August 19)
•    The 16th Annual Shelby American Collection Party at the Shelby American Collection in Boulder, Colorado (September 8)

The Shelby American Collection is the most extensive collection of Shelby manufactured cars, including two of the most important cars in Shelby racing history: the iconic CSX2345 289 FIA roadster, the fifth of the original five Cobra roadsters responsible for the first American-made car victory at the FIA World Manufacturer’s Championship in 1965; and the “Ken Miles” car, the CSX2341 Cobra roadster that was used as a development car for the 1964-1965 Cobra team cars and which was tested, modified, and almost exclusively driven by racing icon Ken Miles.

The September 8 event will include an outdoor show featuring a variety of vintage cars, various members of the Shelby American Team, a silent auction of unique Shelby memorabilia, and much more, in addition to the museum’s collection of Cobras, GT 40s, and Shelby Mustangs.

The legendary Carroll Shelby passed away on May 10, 2012, at the age of 89.
