FIA Declares Circuit Of The Americas Ready For Racing

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 09/25/2012 - 09:23
Circuit of The Americas has been declared ready to host the 2012 Formula 1 United States Grand Prix by Charlie Whiting, who directs racing, safety and technical matters for the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the sanctioning body that oversees international motorsport.

Whiting visited the Central Texas sports and entertainment venue as part of a scheduled pre-race inspection and approved the circuit for “Grade 1” status, which is the highest distinction awarded to a motorsports venue. The passing grade clears the way for the circuit to conduct Formula 1 racing this fall.

Whiting’s visit comes approximately two months before Formula 1 racing is set to return to the United States, November 16-18. All Formula 1 circuits must be inspected and approved by Whiting before they can conduct Grand Prix racing, and the motorsports veteran spent approximately two hours touring the Austin facility along with representatives of Circuit of The Americas, general contractor Austin Commercial and German track architects Tilke GmbH.

Whiting had rave reviews for the entire venue and the work completed since his last visit to the circuit in August 2012.

During his visit, Whiting inspected the now fully paved racing circuit and personally walked the 3.4-mile course to ensure the asphalt met FIA requirements. He inspected kerbing, guard rails, fencing and other safety measures that have been installed around the circuit. He also toured the pit/paddock building, which will house Race Control and serve as his base of operations during the Formula 1 event.

Whiting described the circuit’s permanent structures as “fantastic,” and said he was especially impressed with the design of the circuit’s turns, including its signature Turn 1.

“There are 3-4 corners that are very likely to see overtaking,” Whiting remarked. “If you look at Turn 1, you’ll see that the turns have been designed so that they’re extremely wide and the apex is very short. It’s a very modern approach to slow corners where we hope overtaking will take place. So I’m very confident it will work well.”

Whiting said he was assured that remaining landscaping and painting projects will be completed in a few weeks’ time. He will conduct one final check of the venue on Monday, November 12, as Grand Prix week in Austin gets underway.

Riverside International Automotive Museum To Honor Jerry Grant

At Ontario Speedway on September 3, 1972, Jerry Grant became the first man ever to turn a 200-mph lap in a Champ Car.

He raced against, and for, some of the greatest names in the business; Bobby Unser, Dan Gurney, Bob Bondurant, Carroll Shelby and more. He drove the greatest cars of the era: Ferrari, Corvette, Lotus, Eagles, Cobras and Ford GTs.

When Grant finally hung up his helmet, he brought that same winning dedication to a job as VP of Motorsports for Champion Spark Plugs. At Champion, he oversaw that brand's ascension to near-legendary status. The Champion Spark Plug brand continues to enjoy Grant’s unique efforts to this day.

He was also instrumental in the development and success of Prolong Lubricants.

Grant passed away on August 12 of this year at the age of 77.

On October 13, 2012, beginning at 11 a.m., a memorial “Celebration of Life” will be held in Grant’s honor at the Riverside International Automotive Museum, 815 Marlborough Avenue, #200,

International Drag Racing Hall Of Fame Names Class Of 2013 Inductees

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 09/25/2012 - 04:07
The International Drag Racing Hall of Fame, based at the Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing (Ocala, Florida) has announced the inductees for the 23rd class to the Hall of Fame for the year 2013.

The prestigious induction ceremony will take place in Gainesville, Florida, at the Paramount Plaza Hotel & Suites on Thursday, March 14, 2013, preceding the NHRA Gatornationals. A cocktail reception starts at 6 p.m., with dinner served at 7 p.m. (Eastern).

NHRA Announcer Bob Frey will again serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies.

The International Drag Racing Hall of Fame – Class of 2013:

Dave Boertman (Norton Shores, Michigan) - The Stock/Super Stock racer was one of the most prolific racers during his NHRA and IHRA career. Boertman’s engine building and driving skills propelled him to five NHRA World Championships in Stock or Super Stock, five NHRA Division 3 titles, and 15 IHRA Stock or Super Stock World Championships; capturing 17 NHRA National Event Wallys, and holding over 30 class records. He has a unique place in drag racing history, competing in the first Husband-Wife final in Super Stock at the 1971 NHRA Summernationals—losing to Judi with a red-light.

Wally Booth (Beverly Hills, Michigan) - The quiet-spoken Booth, with partner Dick Arons, set the Pro Stock world on its ear in the early 1970s driving the seemingly overmatched red-white-blue AMC Gremlins and later Hornets in a class dominated by GM, Ford and Chrysler products. Booth delivered five National wins for himself and Booth-Arons engines powered four more in the Maskin & Kanners sister Hornet. Booth had earlier success with “Rat Pack 1” Chevy Camaro in Pro Stock, and earlier in his career in Stock and Super Stock.

Bernie Fedderly (Brownsburg, Indiana) - As a young man growing up in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Bernie Fedderly always wanted to make cars go fast. Fedderly’s mechanical talents led him to become the crew chief for fellow Canadian Terry Capp’s Top Fueler, then tuning Canadian Gary Beck’s Top Fuel car, and then Ed “Ace” McCullouch’s Funny Car to NHRA World Championships at Larry Minor Racing. John Force hired Fedderly in 1992 to be a co-crew chief with Austin Coil, where he has had a major role in helping Force accumulate his impressive resume of 15 World Championships, plus three more for other Team Force drivers.

Harry Hibler (Shadow Hills, California) - Hibler can be classified as a “man for many seasons.” He began his career as a Tech Inspector at the San Fernando drag strip in the early Fifties, and became the track manager. But Hibler also wanted to test his racing abilities—often resulting in some major engine explosions—earning him the nickname “Hand Grenade Harry.” When San Fernando closed, he went to work for Bob Petersen at Petersen Publishing as the Publisher of HOT ROD, then CAR CRAFT and CIRCLE TRACK. He also served the performance automotive aftermarket as a member of the Board of Directors of SEMA, and was named to the SEMA Hall of Fame in 2002.

Hirata, Hobbs & Vodnik - This group of two veteran tuners (Kenny Hirata - Lowell, Indiana and Phil Hobbs - Greenwood, Indiana) from Indiana and a teenaged driver from Ohio (Bobby Vodnik - then 19 years old (Oak Forest, Illinois)) scored one of the biggest upsets in the early history of drag racing, when they won the US Nationals “Top Eliminator” race in 1963. Tension was high as Garlits was having vibration problems and Hirata and Hobbs were sweating a damaged piston. However, Vodnik’s earlier runs had been an average of a tenth quicker, and Garlits gambled. The veteran Garlits left early in “Swamp Rat V,” handing the win to young Vodnik, who saw the wounded piston hold together for a stellar 8.62 second pass (which would have covered Garlits’ 8.65).

K.S. Pittman (Springfield, Missouri) - The late K.S. (“Tiger”) Pittman was noted for his “take no prisoners” approach to the sport as he competed across the country with the S&S Team, competing at AHRA, IHRA, NASCAR and NHRA sanctioned drag races. His early career saw him join with Fred Stone and Tim Woods on their first gasser, joined later by Doug Cook. Pittman then joined forces with Chuck Stolze to help form the legendary S&S Racing Team and became one of the most feared names in the “Gasser Wars” of the 1960s, driving A/GS ’33 Willys, a ’41 Willys, and later an Austin and an Opel GT.  He was a member of the 1964 US Drag Racing Team which went to Great Britain and helped transplant the sport to Europe.

Dick Rosberg (Rockingham, North Carolina) - The late Dick Rosberg, a veteran Southern California Funny Car pilot, began campaigning Top Gassers at Lions Drag Strip before being tabbed by the legendary Tim Beebe to wheel his new flopper at the end of the 1960s. After a stint behind wheel of Tim Arnold’s “Hallucination” he partnered with Bob Novak and Tim McDaniel on the “Northwind” fueler, and later the well-known “Fighting Irish” Funny Cars.  Jet cars then captured Rosberg’s attention, and the trio campaigned a sleek TransAm bodied jet car with Stroh’s brewery backing. He actively sought to improve the safety of jet cars, and served as a jet car inspector for a number of years.

Louis Senter  (Encino, California) - Senter is one of the original pioneers of the performance automotive aftermarket, and a passionate racer of the late 1940s through the 1960s. He co-founded Ansen Automotive and built a huge following among Ford V8-60 flat-head racers on the dry lakes, sprint cars and drag racing circuits. Senter helped develop drag racing in the Los Angeles basin, first holding races at the Santa Ana blimp base, and then building and running the famed Saugus drag strip at an abandoned naval air station. He was one of the founders of the Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association (now Specialty Equipment Market Association)—SEMA—and became one of the early inductees to the SEMA Hall of Fame. Senter was also passionate about racer safety, developing one of the earliest fire suit and the safety bellhousing, among other products.

The Founders Award - Dr. Robert C. Post, PhD (Easton, Maryland) Bob Post grew up in Pasadena, California, with a lot of great drag racers. His own time as a racer lasted only a few years, but he never lost his love for the sport throughout a long career as a writer, editor, teacher, and museum curator. In 1973 he went to work for the Smithsonian Institution, and in 1986 he began planning an exhibition sponsored by DuPont called A Material World. Here was his chance to fulfill a lifetime ambition, to spotlight a top-fueler at the National Museum of American History, and Don Garlits agreed to donate his World Champion Swamp Rat XXX. When Don lit SR one last time on the steps of the museum, it got Bob thinking. He had followed drag racing from the start, and he was a professional historian with a doctoral degree. He had also written a dozen books. Time for a history of drag racing. Thus followed High Performance – The Culture and Technology of Drag Racing, 1950-2000, the book Garlits calls “the Bible,” which was published in 1993, and has gone through many reprintings and a new edition in 2001. While the book has sold well, its numbers pale in comparison to the number of people who first got close to a top-fueler at the Smithsonian.

The honorees are selected by a committee of veteran drag racing and performance industry figures. The 2013 selection committee consists of: Steve Gibbs (Retired Vice President, NHRA), Harry Hibler (President, UNI-Marketing, LLC), Ted Jones (Masters Entertainment, Retired President, IHRA) and Greg Sharp (Curator, NHRA Motorsports Museum).

Corporate table sponsorship programs are available. A table sponsorship costs $1000, which includes seating for ten with logo on the table, a banquet program listing, and inclusion in 2014 promotional brochures, a pair of free passes to the Don Garlits Drag Racing Museum plus logo placement on the banquet DVD credits. Table sponsors will receive a DVD of the evening’s event, and additionally, each sponsor will be recognized from the stage during the televised portion of the event. Individual seating tickets will be available at $100 each.

Presenters will be named in the future.

Ticket details and additional information are available by calling or emailing Donna Garlits at: 352/245- 8661 or 877/271-3278 toll free, fax: 352/245-6895, email: donna@garlits.com.

Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow Engine Challenge National Championship Coming To
PRI In 2013

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 09/24/2012 - 09:01
The Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow Engine Challenge build competition will hold its 2013 National Championship at the 26th Annual Performance Racing Industry Trade Show, December 12-14, 2013, in Indianapolis, Indiana, officials announced today.

Each year hundreds of automotive technology students from high schools across the country take part in regional competitions to determine which teams can disassemble and reassemble a small-block Chevrolet engine with aftermarket components in the fastest time, with the top scorers advancing to the National Championship.

In 2013, a select group of teams with the best time will be invited to compete for scholarship money and industry recognition at the PRI Trade Show in Indianapolis, site of the world's largest annual gathering of hardcore racing parts and professionals.

"We are excited to have this special event, and all the fine young people that participate in it, at the 2013 PRI Trade Show. They represent the next generation of leaders in the racing industry, so we welcome the opportunity to have them compete in the Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow Engine Challenge National Championship at the world's largest racing trade show," said John Kilroy, producer of the PRI Trade Show. "This will be fun."

In addition to the established engine challenge events, the 2013 Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow National Championship will feature an expanded competition format with three new contests:

- Carburetor Rebuild Competition
- Ring and Pinion Challenge
- Cylinder Head Challenge

Since its inception in 2008 at the Race and Performance Expo in St. Charles, Illinois, the Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow Engine Challenge has seen explosive growth in the number of competing teams. In the first year of competition, five teams with 25 students competed. By the end of the 2012 season, there were 112 teams with 560 students competing. The competition has been seen by more than 760,000 people, and has raised over $6 million in scholarship money donated by OTC, SAM and UNOH over the last four years.

"This industry that we're in and love is turning gray. It's getting older year after year," said Jim Bingham, chairman of Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow and president/CEO of Winner's Circle Speed & Custom, Joliet, Illinois. "This is designed to be a program to bring young people inside this industry. This is about bringing them in, showing them that they can enjoy making a living in the high performance field, and, as a result, we get youth and talent inside our industry every year.

"We're looking forward to working with PRI in 2013," he added. "I think it's a great fit in a racing show, because what we're doing is more racing-oriented. It will also allow us to add more events because we're going to have a lot of space to work with."

Building on the success of its first year, the National Championship moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, in 2009, where three divisional winners and one wildcard entry competed in the inaugural "Showdown at SEMA."

The championship round has been held at the SEMA Show each year since, and in 2012 it will once again take place on the SEMA Show floor of the Las Vegas Convention Center, October 30-November 2, before moving to PRI in 2013.

"I absolutely love this event," said Chris Kersting, SEMA president and CEO. "It is amazing to me that Jim's activity has impacted so many young members of our industry over the years. We're pleased to be a part of the event and support this effort."

"This is just what our industry needed," added Vic Edelbrock. "It involves our youth, and gives them a focus that will help prepare them for careers in the performance automotive aftermarket."

Kicking off the countdown to next year's Championship, PRI will host a regional Hot Rodders Of Tomorrow event during the 2012 PRI Trade Show, which takes place Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 29-December 1, in the North/South Building of the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

Rocky Mountain Raceways Returns To NHRA For 2013

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 09/24/2012 - 06:24
After a three-year affiliation with the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA), Rocky Mountain Raceways will be returning to the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) as part of Pacific Division Seven for 2013 and beyond.

"We appreciate our relationship with IHRA, and we hope we did a good job for them as a member track. We feel at this time that switching back to the NHRA sanction will help increase our car count across all of our classes," said Mike Eames, Rocky Mountain Raceways General Manager, and Ron Craft, Rocky Mountain Raceways Drag Strip Manager.

Headquartered in Glendora, California, NHRA is the largest sanctioning body in the world. Wally Parks founded the NHRA in 1951.

By moving to the NHRA, Rocky Mountain Raceways and the State of Utah once again have the opportunity to host a Lucas Oil Divisional race that will draw racers and fans from across the Western United States. The race is tentatively scheduled toward the end of Rocky Mountain Raceways' 2013 racing season.

"Having a Lucas Oil Divisional event so late in the season makes it very appealing with several of the 2013 national and divisional NHRA championships being swayed here," said Eames. "The move to NHRA makes it easier for RMR racers and out-of-state racers, because they will not have to carry two separate licenses, chassis certifications, etc., just to run a few events at RMR. It should strengthen the competition with the Boise, Grand Junction, and Las Vegas cars that run at Rocky Mountain Raceways."

Utah racers will benefit from the NHRA transition because they will have greater opportunity to participate at other NHRA Drag Strips and events.

"It is a good opportunity for our junior dragster team to participate at the Western Conference Finals in Denver, and our RMR Summit Racing Series team to run the Summit ET Bracket Finals," Eames added.

A driver’s meeting will be held at the end of the 2012 racing season to discuss the transition.

Federal-Mogul’s Iconic Champion Brand Expands 'Search For A Champion' Contest

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 09/24/2012 - 05:55
Federal-Mogul’s iconic Champion brand of spark plugs, wiper blades and chemical additives will once again be at the forefront of the North American racing community through a new and expanded version of its popular “Search for a Champion” promotion.

The contest, which attracted hundreds of video entries in 2012, will award $125,000 in Champion motorsports sponsorships for the 2013 racing season.

"'Search for a Champion' connected the latest leading-edge Champion technologies with millions of consumers, including a new generation of racers and performance enthusiasts. Based on the extraordinary success of this brand-building program, we are dramatically expanding its reach and the available sponsorship dollars to propel the Champion bow tie logo into the winner’s circle in virtually every form of engine-driven racing in 2013," said Michael Proud, director of marketing, North America, Federal-Mogul.

The 2013 program was unveiled recently by NASCAR Sprint Cup driver and Champion spokesperson Kevin Harvick, who invited racers to develop and submit creative two-minute videos that describe how a Champion sponsorship would help them dominate the competition in 2013.

The program is open to any North American team competing in any engine-driven motor sport and in any competitive environment, including asphalt, dirt, off-road, snow, and water.

Videos will be archived on the Champion brand’s www.AlwaysaChampion.com website, where consumers around the world will have the chance to vote for their favorites.

Racers can begin uploading their videos to the www.AlwaysaChampion.com website on November 1, 2012.

Consumer voting will begin in January, and the first round of sponsorship winners will be announced by Harvick in conjunction with the Daytona 500 in February 2013. Harvick and the Champion team will select a grand-prize $50,000 sponsorship winner in April.

New Hampshire Motor Speedway Unveils New On-Site Legend Cars Dealership

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 09/21/2012 - 08:15
New Hampshire Motor Speedway has created a new gateway to grassroots racing in the Northeast with the unveiling this week of its new on-site Granite State Legend Cars dealership.

The goal of the quickly growing and lucrative new business that serves the Northeast and Canada is to provide turn-key racing to aspiring up-and-coming drivers and teams.

Legends have produced some of the top names in NASCAR today, including Sprint Cup Series drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Joey Logano, Trevor Bayne, Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch.

The stars of tomorrow were on hand to share in the festivities on Thursday. Sixteen-year-old Ryan Hammar (Pembroke, N.H.), 15-year-old Taylor Martin (Windham, N.H.), 13-year-old Wyatt Alexander (Ellsworth, Maine) and 12-year-old TJ Bleau (Troy, N.H.), all of the NELCAR (New England Legend Car) series, showed off their rides for the large crowd assembled outside the dealership.

The cars look much like a scaled-down version of coupes from the 1930s and 1940s moonshine days of NASCAR—where it all started. Reaching speeds of 130 miles per hour, they handle much like the trucks found in the Camping World Truck Series.

That provides a huge benefit to young drivers, who are more prepared for the subsequent series than they would have been without Legends.

The Granite State Legend Car dealership should help the teams racing in NELCAR with the cost of keeping their vehicles in tip-top shape. With over half a million dollars in parts, the dealership supplies everything from tires to fire suits as well as a full-service garage.

For those looking to get into the sport for the first time will be able to do so for less than $13,000. A Bandolero, a spec-series racer designed for drivers as young as 8 years old, can be purchased, turn-key ready, for less than $6000.

There is also a tremendous economic impact, as it will provide new jobs. Nearly 6000 cars have been sold to 23 different countries, including Russia, Finland and six that were purchased in Japan during the unveiling.

To see the Legend cars in action, purchase tickets to the SYLVANIA 300 NASCAR weekend by stopping by the speedway Ticket Office, visiting the speedway website at www.nhms.com, or calling the Ticket Hotline at 603/783-4931.
