New Qualifying Format For NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Highlights 2013 Competition Changes

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 10/16/2012 - 03:47
NASCAR today announced a number of competition changes for the 2013 season, highlighted by a new qualifying format in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series that places a greater emphasis on speed.

Following is a breakdown of next season’s slate of competition updates:

Qualifying Format In The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series

In NASCAR Sprint Cup competition, the series will move to a 36-6-1 format where the fastest 36 cars will make the race on speed.

The next six highest ranking cars in owners points that have not already earned a starting position through qualifying and who have entered the event by the posted entry deadline will also make the field. The final starting position will be awarded to the most recent eligible past champion driver. If there is no eligible past champion driver, then a seventh car will make the field based upon owners’ points.

Provisional positions in the 36-6-1 format will be lined up by owners’ points, not speed.

Since 2005, the top 35 cars in owners’ points were guaranteed a spot in the field. Now, only a maximum of seven cars will be locked into a given race.

In 2013, the qualifying order for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events will return to a random draw. However, in the event qualifying is canceled due to rain, the field will be set per the rule book and the starting lineup will continue to be determined by practice speeds.

Additionally, provisional positions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup, NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will be based upon the previous year’s owner points for the first three races, as opposed to the first five races in previous years for the NASCAR Sprint Cup and the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and four races for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Testing Policy Opened Up For 2013

Beginning next season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, there will be up to four tests per organization available to teams at tracks at which the series competes. Since 2009, teams could only test at tracks that did not hold NASCAR national series events.

For the NASCAR Nationwide and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, starting in 2013, there will be up to two tests per organization at tracks where those series compete.  If the organization has an official Sunoco Rookie of Year candidate, then that team will receive one additional test. Additionally, NASCAR will open track activity early for extended practice at two additional events per series, to be determined.

Maximum Field Set At 40 Cars For NASCAR Nationwide Series

In an effort to strengthen the ownership base up and create a sense of urgency among teams to make races, the maximum starting field for the NASCAR Nationwide Series will be set at 40, as opposed to the 43-car field in previous years.

A maximum NASCAR Sprint Cup Series starting field will remain at 43 cars while the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series will hold steady at 36.

Lucas Oil Acquires Midwest Latemodel Racing Association

Adding to an impressive line-up of racing series operated under the Lucas Oil banner, company officials have announced the acquisition of the Midwest Latemodel Racing Association, better known as the MLRA.

Lucas Oil had been the title sponsor for the series for several years, but will now own and operate MLRA from the offices of its Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Missouri.

Since 1998, the Lucas Oil MLRA has been a regional series under the management team of Harriett and Allen "Cowboy" Chancellor. Beginning in November, the sanctioning body will be run by Dan Robinson, who will add the title "series director" to his current role as general manager of the Lucas Oil Speedway, also know as the "Diamond of the
Dirt Tracks."

The highly popular series has drawn up to 8000 spectators to its action-packed races.

While the Lucas Oil MLRA schedule included several yearly stops at the Lucas-owned Speedway, series competitors also hit the dirt bullrings in Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska and other parts of Missouri.

The series is getting set for its big 2012 season finale on October 19 and 20 at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kansas in conjunction with the NASCAR Sprint Cup weekend at nearby Kansas Speedway.

Lucas Oil also runs the more nationally based Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series, as well as several other professional motorsports series including Lucas Oil Off Road, Lucas Oil Modified Racing, Lucas Oil Pro Pulling and Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series.

ARCA, CRA Extend Sanction for 2013 Season

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 10/15/2012 - 11:40
Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America (ARCA) and Champion Racing Association (CRA) have extended the formal working relationship between the two motorsports sanctioning bodies.

ARCA, currently concluding its 60th Anniversary Season, will sanction the racing activities for the ARCA CRA Super Series once again in 2013. The super late model stock car racing series, founded in 1997, is based in Salem, Indiana.

ARCA president and CEO Ron Drager noted the opportunity for continued growth and development as part of the extended partnership with CRA. Drager lauded the roles of CRA's managing partners, Glenn Luckett and R.J. Scott, in making the enhanced relationship a reality for another season.

The sanctioning agreement extension between ARCA and CRA reflects ARCA's interests in supporting and strengthening the sport of stock car racing. The ARCA sanction will continue to provide participants in the ARCA CRA Super Series with ARCA member benefits, including Participant Accident Insurance.

ARCA will also continue to provide public relations, race operations, and marketing support to its formal partner, while building on an already strong developmental racing base.

Toledo Speedway, one of ARCA's two short track properties, has hosted 13 ARCA CRA Super Series events since 2000, including the season opening 7Up 100 in April. In 2012, Flat Rock Speedway, the ARCA-sanctioned quarter-mile oval in Michigan, hosted the ARCA CRA Super Series for the first time, bringing template-bodied super late model racing back to the suburban Detroit track for the first time in over 15 years.

The agreement will give the ARCA CRA Super Series champion the opportunity to test an ARCA Racing Series car in the open test at Daytona International Speedway in December 2013. Andy Hillenburg's Fast Track High Performance Driving School, the Official Driving School of ARCA and the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards, will provide the test car and support team. The commitment allows drivers to develop skills within the unified framework of CRA and ARCA.

More details surrounding the relationship and the new ARCA CRA Super Series will be provided as they develop.

Racer’s candy store. Racer heaven. Race engine builder’s paradise.

These are phrases we’ve heard to describe what has simply become known as PRI.

The 25th edition of this grand gathering of speed merchants will open its doors in Orlando on Thursday morning, November 29. For the 25th time, attending buyers will find a professional trade show atmosphere featuring outstanding displays of the latest advances in racing products, precision machining equipment and much more. An extraordinary array of exhibits, along with over 35 special events.

It all started with a need in the marketplace for racing entrepreneurs to explore the best this industry has to offer—all in one place, all at one time. They could visit the PRI Trade Show, and return home with news of advances in racing components that will help their customers win races the coming year. A visit to the PRI Trade Show delivered a sense that one was current, and that there was money to be made.

From data acquisition to coatings, new alloys and composites, suspension to engine parts…stock car, drag, open wheel, road racing, off-road…lighter, stronger, more aerodynamic…improve efficiency, lower overhead, increase quality control, assure repeatability, add a new revenue stream…a visit to the PRI Trade Show was not so much an expense as an investment.

The exhibitors deliver the ROI. It’s their genius in engineering and manufacturing that serve as the star attraction. They create solutions for racers. They expand the limits of fast.

PRI magazine is a big part of the story, too, delivering the news, the buying trends, the evolution in racing technology as it happens month by month. And the magazine previews and promotes the annual epicenter of new racing technology.

ATL Seeking Knowledgeable, Experienced Installers

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Mon, 10/15/2012 - 10:14
Aero Tec Laboratories (ATL) of Ramsey, New Jersey, the oldest and largest racing fuel cell producer, offers safety cells for every type of motor racing.

However, the company is not experts at installing these cells in the thousands of different race car chassis that exist, so they are looking for specialists.

In fact, ATL is seeking talented race shops in the US that can design, fabricate and install the necessary mounting hardware and plumbing for a secure cell-to-car integration.

ATL would like to add shops with knowledge and experience in performing sound and reliable fuel cell installations to its list of Recommended Installers.

Even if installations do not fall within your domain, but you can recommend a capable shop, ATL asks that you pass along their contact information.

Thousands of racers view ATL’s extensive website and catalogs every day, so a Preferred Installer’s listing would assist ATL customers and help drive business to that Installer’s fab-shop as well.

If interested, please contact ATL:

Nissan DeltaWing Will Compete In 2013 ALMS Season

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 10/12/2012 - 12:36
Next weekend’s Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda will be the first race in North America for the Nissan DeltaWing, but it won’t be the last.

The American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón and sanctioning body IMSA revealed Friday that the revolutionary new prototype would compete as a fully classified car in the 2013 ALMS season.

As it did at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, Nissan DeltaWing is set to run unclassified at Road Atlanta as a factory-backed entry. The unique car features half the weight, half the horsepower and half the aerodynamic drag but all of the performance of a typical Le Mans prototype.

IMSA will collect and analyze race data at Petit Le Mans to create the rules for DeltaWing to compete as a championship-contending car in the ALMS for customers. That is expected to come less than a year from the car’s worldwide debut that occurred in June at Le Mans.

The 1000-mile/10-hour Petit Le Mans will provide a stark contrast for designer Ben Bowlby and the DeltaWing team—including drivers Gunnar Jeannette and Lucas Ordonez.

The 2.54-mile Road Atlanta is dramatically shorter, tighter and features more elevation changes than the 8.5-mile Le Mans circuit.

The 1,000-mile/10-hour Petit Le Mans powered by Mazda is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET on Saturday, October 20, from Road Atlanta. ABC's broadcast begins at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, October 21. Full, live coverage starts at 11:15 a.m. ET on ESPN3 with qualifying coverage beginning at 1:50 p.m. ET on Friday, October 19.

The Series' website offers additional content such as live in-car cameras, and timing and scoring for all users around the world. Viewers outside the US can watch Petit Le Mans and all ALMS races live on ALMS.com.
