Must See Racing To Visit Historic Midwestern Tracks In May

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 01/25/2013 - 10:46
A whirlwind week in May awaits the TRUFUEL MUST SEE RACING XTREME SPRINT SERIES and BIOBASED.US MUST SEE RACING SUPERMODIFIED SERIES as they visit two historic Midwestern tracks for five events in a seven-day span in 2013.

First up is the TruFuel “Xtreme Speed Challenge” MSR SPRINT CAR SERIES and the MSR SUPERMODIFIED SERIES at Winchester Speedway with an open testing day and a fan friendly meet and greet cookout on Saturday, May 18. Racing is on Sunday afternoon, May 19.

Winchester is one of the most notable and intimidating racing venues in the world, serving as a perfect host for the lightning-fast winged sprint cars and the return of the supers after last year’s first appearance following a 22-year hiatus. Gates open at 10 a.m., with racing getting under way at 2 p.m.

On Monday, May 20, both series move some 50 miles east to Anderson Speedway, one of the fastest quarter-mile tracks in the world. The SUPERMODIFIEDS start off the week on Monday night, May 20, returning to the Speedway after last year’s inaugural Twin 50’s event. The WINGED SPRINTS are up next on Wednesday, May 22, featuring the Must See Racing 60, one of the most frantic races of the season. A full field of WINGED SPRINT and SUPERMODIFIED cars will do battle on the tight confines of the high banks at Anderson Speedway. Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.

The week is capped off in grand style with the 65TH PAYLESS LITTLE 500 at Anderson Speedway on Saturday night, May 25. Must See Racing is the sanctioning body for this iconic racing event. The classic event will see the sprinters remove their wings for the only time this season, competing for their share of one of the largest purses in short track racing. The Little 500 starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, with practice and qualifying taking place Wednesday through Friday. Advance race tickets are recommended.

The TRIPLE CROWN, presented by Must See Racing, will award the race team that can win the Winchester feature, the MSR60 feature and the Payless Little 500 with the same sprint car and driver a bonus of $50,000. This brings the total purse and possible bonuses for the week of racing to over $250,000.

The events will be telecast nationally on a tape-delayed basis. Well-known broadcaster Rick Benjamin will serve as play-by-play host, while Hall of Fame driver Tom Bigelow will provide color commentary. Respected writer and broadcaster Dave Argabright will serve as pit reporter.

World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series Adds Merced To Spring 2013 Swing

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Thu, 01/24/2013 - 11:53
The spring Western swing has now become the Western dozen as the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series has added Merced Speedway to the schedule.

The March 29 event marks the third consecutive year for the series at the tight third-mile oval, where Sammy Swindell has won each of the two previous World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series races.

The last time the series competed in the West, Donny Schatz capitalized on a hot streak en route to his fifth World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series championship. In nine races along the West Coast last August and September, Schatz won twice, finished second four times, placed fourth twice and his worst result was 11th.

This spring’s jaunt to the West includes 12 races at 10 tracks in Nevada, Arizona and California throughout March and the first two weeks of April.

It leads off with a two-day Las Vegas event at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas on Wednesday and Thursday, March 6-7. The series caps that weekend by making its return to Tucson International Raceway on Saturday, March 9, for the first time since 2007 at the Wildcat Shootout.

The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series then finishes the trip with five consecutive weekends in California, beginning with a doubleheader at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare the following weekend, March 15-16.

The series will debut at the new Stockton 99 Dirt Track in Stockton on Friday, March 22, before the annual Mini Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico on Saturday, March 23.

The Merced event is the only race currently scheduled the following weekend to close the month of March.

April begins on Friday, April 5, at Antioch Speedway in Antioch, where Californian Tim Kaeding threw a thrilling slide job on Schatz in turns three and four on the last lap to win last year’s lone event.

Calistoga Speedway in Calistoga hosts a race on Saturday, April 6. Schatz claimed last season’s race during his hot streak.

The trip west concludes with an event on Friday, April 12, at Kings Speedway in Hanford and on Saturday, April 13, at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris.

NASCAR announced this week the appointment of Jimmy Wilson to the position of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour director and Juston Ellis to the same position for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

Wilson, originally from Orlando, Fla., has served the two previous years as director of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour. He’ll now lead the Northeast-based NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, which traces its roots back to the first NASCAR-sanctioned event in 1948.

Ellis, who hails from Suffolk, Va., will fill the void left by Wilson. He served the two previous seasons as the technical director for the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

Wilson, 37, has nearly two decades of experience as a stock car racing official. He was a NASCAR Timing & Scoring official for four seasons in the mid-1990s and served as the series director and race director for the USAR Pro Cup Series for 14 years. In two seasons leading the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, the car count increased by an average of five entries per event.

Wilson fills the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour director position that was vacated by the recent appointment of Chad Little to the same position for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Prior to joining the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour officials staff in 2011, Ellis, 33, came to NASCAR with six seasons of experience as pit steward and technical director at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series-sanctioned facility. He graduated from Old Dominion University in 2002 with a degree in civil engineering.

Wilson and Ellis will lead their respective tours for the first time in the non-points UNOH Battle At The Beach, Feb. 18-19 at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway. The NASCAR Whelen Modified and NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tours will run a combination race as part of a tripleheader of feature racing action on a .4-mile oval on the track’s backstretch.

ACAT Global Buys Stake In Oliver Racing Parts

Advanced Clean Air Technologies Global (ACAT), manufacturers of lightweight catalytic converter substrates, has made a significant investment in Oliver Racing Parts (formerly Oliver Connecting Rods), the Grand Rapids, Michigan-based manufacturer of high-performance connecting rods.

The first phase of ACAT’s investment has cleaned up Oliver’s balance sheet, eliminating all debt. A second phase of investment will include equipment upgrades and adding key personnel to the company, according to ACAT CEO Joseph A. Moch.

“Oliver Racing Parts complements ACAT nicely,” said Moch. “Both companies are dedicated to manufacturing well-engineered, high-quality performance products for original equipment and aftermarket use, and both are made in the U.S.A. It’s a great fit.”

“ACAT’s investment will keep our company moving forward,” said Bruce Baldwin, founder of Oliver Connecting Rods. “This enables us to build up inventories and ensure product availability, our product line will expand to cover the growing market for premium high-performance connecting rods, and Oliver will have the resources to solidify our position as one of the world’s best connecting rod manufacturers.”

The second phase of ACAT’s investment is expected to occur over the next six to 12 months, bringing machinery and new equipment upgrades to convert Oliver’s operation into a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility. Plans also call for Oliver to hire four to eight additional full-time employees and expand the company’s product line of high-performance connecting rods.

Oliver Racing Parts, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2013, manufactures connecting rods made from aircraft-quality steel for motorsports applications.
