Delivering Value

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Tue, 03/12/2013 - 04:48
One of the SEMA resources we tapped into recently was a post-Show survey organized by Gavin Knapp, SEMA’s senior market research manager. PRI has never conducted such a survey before, as we’ve always enjoyed close communication with exhibitors and attending buyers. But, it’s always worthwhile to verify your perspective on your business, and I’m happy to report that there was good news in the results. In this changing world, the racing industry trade show still retains its power in the marketplace.

The digital revolution may have captured everyone’s attention the past several years, but it does not trump the value of meeting face to face to conduct business, and get your hands on the components as part of new product sales demonstrations. 86% of buyers say they are more likely to buy from a company that exhibits in the PRI Trade Show. In fact, 89% of buyers planned to buy a product or service from an exhibitor in the 12 months following the show. That figure is probably higher, as 10% said they didn’t know at the time of the survey. On the exhibitors side, 88% said their business objective of generating future orders was met.

There’s still nothing like looking into the eyes of a person with whom you’re going to do business to check for any possible weaknesses in the story they’re telling. There’s nothing like picking up the product to personally witness all the details of how it was constructed and finished. There’s still nothing of more value than real life experience when it comes to the business of new racing technology.

In the upcoming April issue, look for our first advertisement for the return of the PRI Trade Show makes it plain what the goal of this year’s PRI Trade Show is...to connect to the thrilling tradition of racing innovation that’s been a part of the heritage of Indianapolis for over 100 years. PRI will showcase the amazing, previously unthinkable things that you can do to a car to make it faster. All sorts of cars. And the profound fun of this pursuit. You’re going to need all three days. It’s going to be a ‘speed feast’ throughout the Indiana Convention Center.

Free In-Room WiFi In Super Convenient Show Hotels—It’s been rewarding to see how the downtown hotels in Indianapolis have partnered with PRI to provide the most value for exhibitors and attendees at the 2013 PRI Trade Show. Michelle Gallegos, PRI’s housing manager, reports that in-room WiFi is being provided by all the hotels in the PRI Trade Show block. This is especially good news as Michelle also negotiated excellent rates with a broad spectrum of downtown Indianapolis hotels. No frustrating waits for a shuttle bus! All the hotels are within a short walk of the Convention Center, with several connected by climate-controlled skywalks. And downtown is going to be where all the after-hours business gets done in the Indianapolis hotels and nightspots, so you’ll want to be right in the middle of the action when racers take over downtown. It’s going to be fun!

John Surtees Awarded Historic Segrave Trophy

Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on Fri, 03/08/2013 - 11:19
The Royal Automobile Club this week awarded the historic Segrave Trophy to John Surtees OBE.

The 2012 Segrave Trophy citation reads: For his outstanding career in two and four wheeled motorsport, including seven motorcycle world championship titles, culminating in the unique achievement of being the only man to win a motorcycle World Championship and the Formula One World Championship.

Speaking at the awards Tom Purves, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said, "John is one of the most accomplished and versatile sportsmen of all time, winning seven motorcycle world championships and then victory in the 1964 Formula One World Championship. He is the only person in history to have won world championships on both two wheels and four yet, until today, John’s name was not on the distinguished list of Segrave Trophy winners.

“This award is made to John not as recognition of a lifetime of achievement,” he added, “but as a somewhat overdue recognition of a unique sporting triumph that would, doubtlessly, have been recognized at the time had it not been for Donald Campbell, who broke the land and water speed records simultaneously the same year. It is therefore our great honor to salute John’s successes, albeit perhaps a little later than we should have done.”

Upon receiving the trophy, Surtees said, “Donald Campbell achieved his success on land and water in the same year, which perhaps overshadowed my having taken 4 years to put two and four wheel titles together. I am honored, as I approach the fiftieth anniversary of my Formula One World Championship title, to receive this prestigious Trophy on behalf of not only myself but also the world of two and four wheel motorsport.”

Surtees started out his racing career as a passenger for his father—a top sidecar racer—and although they finished first, the Surtees duo was disqualified when it was discovered that John was too young to compete within the rules.

Undeterred, he began competing on motorbikes in road races, and at just 19 years old, he joined the celebrated Norton works team. Two years later he was given his break with the MV Agusta team and duly won the 500cc World Championship—the first of seven world titles he secured in just five years and which resulted in the award of an MBE.

In 1960, Surtees mixed two wheels with four by driving in Formula Junior, F1 as well as for MV Agusta. Despite an offer in 1961 to drive for Lotus in F1, Surtees opted for a Cooper run by Reg Parnell. He moved to Ferrari in 1963 and took his first Grand Prix victory, and went on to win the F1 World Championship the next season. Surtees became the only 'Grand Master' of both two and four wheels.

Surtees' career continued beyond his Formula One Championship year, and in 1966 he was second in the World Championship. He has raced motorcycles and just about every type of car with remarkable success in almost every discipline: Formula One, Can-Am Championship, F2, F5000 to Le Mans. As an engineer it is widely recognized that his input was a key part of bringing success to Ferrari in 1964.

As Vice President of the British Racing Drivers' Club and a consultant to Buckmore Park Kart Circuit, Surtees has worked tirelessly to encourage British racing talent, and was team principal for A1 Team Great Britain.
