To mark Motorsports Awareness Month, Athena Racing is now accepting applications for its inaugural 2019-20 team.
A unique extracurricular program, Athena Racing is the first all-female high school auto racing team. Athena's goal is to create learning experiences and opportunities for young women that increase confidence and inspire a passion in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).
"We are excited to be offering this opportunity to ten young ladies. The possibilities that will now be offered to them will open doors that were once closed. In these male-dominated careers, it is not easy to be the only woman in the room. We are working towards leveling the playing field and showing these young ladies that you can be a smart, beautiful woman who loves cars, racing, wrenching," said Athena Racing Executive Director Loxley Browne.
The Olympian-like training program will feature racing and business experts and will cover ten education tracks including driving instruction, mechanics, safety, leadership, entrepreneurship, marketing, photography, public speaking, wellness and etiquette. Similar to Scouting's Eagle Scout badge requirements, the ten team members will master the education tracks during their one-year of study.
Based in San Marcos, California, the Athena Racing will compete in California, Arizona and Nevada. The full-ride scholarship valued at $50,000 provided to all ten teammates will cover all of their costs of training, racing and travel.
