Drivers, crew members and fans took time out from the usual excitement of race night at Heart O’ Texas Speedway to remember the victims of the recent explosion in nearby West.

Many of those at the track have close ties to the community and honored the First Responders called to the scene after the disaster. Members of the Elm Mott Fire Department, who serve as the safety team at the track every week, were saluted for their efforts.

Drivers passed helmets through the grandstands, provided T-shirts for sale, and some added the prize money they won for a total of $5,000 to be given to the West relief fund.

When word was received about an approaching convoy transporting the remains of four of the firemen who were killed to Waco, racing was halted and fans lined the parking lot facing Interstate 35 to applaud and wave in support of the fallen and their escorts.

IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified winner William Gould and Scoggin-Dickey Parts Center Southern SportMod winner Steve Hayes were among the drivers adding their shares of the purse to the relief fund.
