A state budget proposed by North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper features a planned $8 million investment to the new owners of The Rock Speedway & Entertainment Complex (previously Rockingham Speedway), the motorsports and entertainment facility featuring a 1-mile, D-shaped asphalt oval and dragstrip in Rockingham, North Carolina.
PRI previously reported on the announcement that Rockingham Properties LLC and The Rock Speedway and Entertainment Complex have purchased the facility back in late August 2018.
The proposed investment would be used for infrastructure improvements to the facility, such as wastewater and water extensions, asphalt repayment, a new pedestrian bridge, grandstand repairs, erosion control efforts and more.
Upgrades will also be done on the facility’s buildings, including bathrooms, as well as upgrades to the adjacent Rockingham Dragway.
According to the Governor’s office, the total cost of Rockingham’s improvements will total $11.45 million.
As of now, it is still unclear when racing will return to the facility, which previously hosted NASCAR’s top-level series 78 times from 1965 through 2004. Entertainment events, including a music festival, are planned for 2019.
