The state-of-the-art three-eighths-mile track at the Royal Purple Raceway was destroyed this week according to photos and a post on the track’s Facebook page. Only the grandstands remain at the dirt-track portion of the multi-faceted motorsports facility, which will continue to host various events including the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series at the track’s successful drag strip.

“The racing chapter at our Dirt Track Speedway has officially come to a close as crews have begun construction to repurpose this area into a multipurpose events facility,” read the post on the Royal Purple Raceway Facebook page.

“Grandstands are about the only existing infrastructure that will remain in place. Stay tuned for some exciting announcements on our 2017 plans!”

Royal Purple Raceway began life as Houston Raceway Park and was the site of Steve Kinser’s 500th World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series victory.

The track has announced a full schedule of drag racing for the coming season.
