For these exhibitors, a new trade show for just the hardcore racing segment of the automotive aftermarket delivered the right kind of buyers at the right time of the year in just the right way.
Kelly Falls
Hyperco - Logansport, IN
"He probably had no idea it would get this big," said Falls, referring to PRI founder Steve Lewis. "Steve has a passion for motorsports and he knows what people need on both sides of a deal, and that gave everyone the confidence to follow him.
"People had done little shows by then, but none had done it as professionally or targeted the right audience," said Falls. "He came to us with a good plan and knew how to target customers."
"In my business, sooner or later, I would have crossed paths with customers in Indy car or in NASCAR," said Falls. "But as the Show grew, we saw more people from South America and Europe. Stirring up international interest is a real plus because we're not likely to go cold calling in Brazil, Argentina, Japan, or England."
"Big numbers are great. But I'm a believer in quality and I'd rather have 50 legitimate buyers than over 500 tire kickers."
Jeannie Butler
ButlerBuilt Motorsports Equipment - Harrisburg, NC
"Our business wasn't very old at the time and we hadn't done much advertising so we thought we would give it a try. The very first Show was so small, and it was originally set up so that manufacturers could establish dealer networks. It was a huge success. We were sought out and people looked for us."
Rick Scribner
Scribner Plastics - Rancho Cordova, CA
"Steve called me and asked me to do it. I said I would give it a try because I knew Steve would promote it. "There is constantly a waiting list of people who want to talk to me. I'm busy all day and when you have people in your booth, that's what it's all about."
Brian Skipper
Sway-A-Way - Chatsworth, CA
Lewis "hit a niche that was needed. Skipper said he signed on because "very early on, I was impressed on how the Show was organized."
He also saw it as a door opening to a new market for his products. "I had technology developed in off-road racing and I wanted to expand into dirt modifieds and sprint cars specifically," he recalled. He now has also expanded into lines of shock absorbers and says, "we get quite a bit of business" out of the Show.
