ROSS Racing Pistons designs and manufactures high-end aluminum pistons. The company handles 40 to 50 orders each week, and nearly every job is custom. The company also fabricates approximately 1000 pistons in a week, using a process that involves four to five different machining operations performed on high-end computer numerical control (CNC) equipment.

With CNC programming being a critical step in the production process, ROSS’ programmers must work quickly and their programs must be right the first time to avoid delays caused by rework and reprogramming. Just returned at press time from the Knoxville Nationals, and we have to remark on Donnie Schatz’ incredible string of winged sprint car victories here. He’s won seven out of the last eight Knoxville Nationals, storming to the front from a 21st starting position this year to take the win for team owner Tony Stewart. Wow. And this year’s PRI Trade Show carries special significance. Not only does it come with added momentum from last year’s consolidation with the IMIS, but in December we’re bringing over 1100 exhibiting companies, and more than 40,000 attendees from all 50 states and 70-plus countries, to the Racing Capital of the World, Indianapolis!

What’s more, we’ve just confirmed that a favorite industry...

Made In The USA: While in Charlotte, North Carolina, for PRI's Annual Industry Reception, we had the opportunity to visit several area speed shops, engine builders and fabricators, as well as a handful of racing product/equipment manufacturers. Our travels brought us first to Racing Electronics, where President and CEO Bruce Silver and Director of Motorsports Communication Services Kevin Hughes gave us a personalized tour of their stunning 18,000-square-foot Concord facility.

Perhaps most impressive, however, was the fact that Racing Electronics in the last three years has brought nearly all of its operations, including R&D, customer service and production—plastic injection, stamping, over-molding, etc.—back...
