It was not long after I started at PRI that an interview suddenly veered down a different path, and the racing businessperson on the other end of the phone line said with some urgency that we should publish an article soon about a very important issue: the rising expense of racing. His concern was that the racing industry was pricing itself out of business. I shared this suggestion with the publisher, who said we might just want to wait for a while to do the article. That was 24 years ago. Yet, I can still have virtually the same conversation about the rising price of racing today.

Lots of activity at local short tracks around the country these days. For one, Black Rock Speedway in Dundee, New York, has been renamed Yates County Speedway by new promoter Dan Harpell. “I changed the name because I wanted to create a new atmosphere and show the public that a significant change has occurred,” Harpell told the local paper. Here are a few more interesting developments in the racing realm:

When you think about it, sponsorships are more important in auto racing than any other professional sport. In baseball, football, soccer, hockey, golf, etc., individual players often have endorsement deals, but they don’t need them to compete in their sport. Racers very much depend on their sponsors to compete, even at the top levels.

Here’s a quote from the United States Auto Club FF2000 Media Guide: “As a marketing vehicle, auto racing is a proven winner. No sport attracts more corporate sponsorship dollars.”

As a result, racers are very adamant about keeping their sponsors happy, and it’s a big part of the sport—a detail that many might not think much about, like myself.

When I first started at Performance Racing Industry magazine over two decades ago, there was a speech I often had to give to explain what PRI was. As I introduced myself in a phone conversation or at a race as being with Performance Racing Industry, chances were very good back then that silence would follow. We were new. We were small. We were just getting started. My first PRI Trade Show was the one held in Nashville in 1990, when 400 companies exhibited in 600 booths. The magazine’s frequency was upgraded that year from 6 times per year to 12. I would explain that we were not a race fan magazine or, really, a race tech magazine.
